Book excerpt: The Resistors is a parallel sequel to 2018's The Kidnapped. It focuses on blacks, whites, and Native Americans resisting pre-Civil War oppression while attempting to establish dignified identities. It is also in the voice of Sarah, one of the author's direct ancestors. She was the daughter of Esi and Kofi two fictionalized Fante kidnapped from West Africa in 1795. With the help of Quakers, together with two brothers, Robin and Dan, Sarah escaped from being enslaved in Culpeper, Virginia and settled in Warren County, Ohio where she met and married the Scots-Irish Quaker, Charles Ferguson. It is imagined that Sarah was primarily educated by her father who himself was taught reading and writing by Nathan Prescott, his slave master, and secondarily through two years of education at Goose Creek Friends School, a Quaker school in Northern Virginia, renown for being integrated prior to Nat Turner's revolt which led to state laws forbidding the education of people of color.

Book excerpt: "The Resisters is palpably loving, smart, funny, and desperately unsettling. The novel should be required reading for the country both as a cautionary tale and because it is a stone-cold masterpiece. This is Gish Jen's moment. She has pitched a perfect game." --Ann Patchett The time: not so long from now. The place: AutoAmerica. The land: half under water. The Internet: one part artificial intelligence, one part surveillance technology, and oddly human--even funny. The people: Divided. The angel-fair "Netted" have jobs, and literally occupy the high ground. The "Surplus" live on swampland if they're lucky, on water if they're not. The story: To a Surplus couple--he once a professor, she still a lawyer--is born a Blasian girl with a golden arm. At two, Gwen is hurling her stuffed animals from the crib; by ten, she can hit whatever target she likes. Her teens find her happily playing in an underground baseball league. When AutoAmerica rejoins the Olympics, though--with a special eye on beating ChinRussia--Gwen attracts interest. Soon she finds herself playing ball with the Netted even as her mother challenges the very foundations of this divided society. A moving and important story of an America that seems ever more possible, The Resisters is also the story of one family struggling to maintain its humanity and normalcy in circumstances that threaten their every value--as well as their very existence. Extraordinary and ordinary, charming and electrifying, this is Gish Jen at her most irresistible.

Book excerpt: Resistors are needed which will remain constant in value over a period of months with varying conditions of temperature and humidity. Victoreen resistors of the order of 10(exp 8) to 10(exp 11) ohms were tested for these characteristics as well as for changes due to continuous current and for polarization A means of eliminating changes due to humidity was tested on the resistors and on various insulators. This report gives results for the first three months of an investigation begun September 20, 1943.

The book has the following exclusive features: (i) The Learning objectives of each chapter have been incorporated in the beginning to develop curiosity among the students. (ii) Practice exercise have been added in all the chapters after suitable intervals to impart necessary practice. (iii) At the end of each chapter, its summary highlights are given. This will enable the students to revise the subject matter quickly. (iv) A number of short answer and test questions have been given at the end of each chapter. While answering these questions, the readers will have to think deep into the subject matter. This will improve their analytical approach. Consequently, the students/readers will be in position to respond in a better way while appearing before the selection board or to deal with practical problems. (v) A sufficient number of objective type questions (MCQ) have been given at the end of each chapter. These questions will help the students to perform better in the competitive examinations. (vi) The subject matter is treated in a simple and lucid manner so that an average student can understand the subject easily. Although, typical mathematical expressions are avoided but simple mathematical relations are used for better explanation and understanding.
