Book excerpt: ABSTRACT The repair and strengthening of concrete bridge members with CFRP has become increasingly popular over recent years. However, significant research is still needed in order to develop more robust guidelines and specifications. The research project aims to assist with improving design prosedures for damaged concrete members with the use of CFRP. This document summarizes the analysis and testing of full-scale 40' foot long prestressed concrete (PSC) bridge girders exposed to simulated impact damage and repaired with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) materials. A total of five AASHTO type II bridge girders fabricated in the 1960's were taken from an existing bridge, and tested at the Florida Department of Transportation FDOT structures lab in Tallahassee, Florida. The test specimens were tested under static loading to failure under 4-point bending. Different CFRP configurations were applied to each of the girders. Each of the test girders performed very well as each of them held a higher capacity than the control girder. The repaired girders 5, 6 and 7 surpassed the control girder's capacity by 10.88%, 15.9% and 11.39%. These results indicate that repairing laterally damaged prestressed concrete bridge girders with CFRP is an effective way to restore the girders flexural capacity.

Book excerpt: Over-height vehicles impacting prestressed concrete (PS) and reinforced concrete (RC) bridge girders is a frequent problem experienced by the majority of transportation departments all over the world. The most common practice used to restore a damaged bridge is to cut out the damaged girder and replace it with a new one. More recently, alternative methods have been examined to help decrease the costs of replacing damaged girders and minimizing closure time. The research reported in this thesis considered three scenarios to examine the effectiveness of using Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) to restore impact-damaged PS girders to their original capacity. The first scenario investigated the effectiveness of CFRP sheets to repair a 54 ft (16.4 m) long girder with one ruptured prestressing strand caused by an over-height vehicle impact. The second scenario investigated the effectiveness of CFRP sheets to repair two 54 ft (16.4 m) long girders with various numbers of prestressing strands ruptured artificially at midspan. The final scenario examined the effectiveness of CFRP sheets to repair a shear-critical specimen with four prestressing strands artificially ruptured near the support. The design of all CFRP repair systems was conducted using a cracked section analysis and/or guidelines for shear capacity of prestressed members. The predictions according to the two approaches compared well with the measure values. The designs were compared to current codes and a recently developed debonding model. All of the repaired girders were able to reach and surpass their respective undamaged capacities. All of the flexural tests failed due to crushing of concrete and exhibited ductility even higher than the predicted value for the undamaged specimens.

Book excerpt: Repair with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) has become a topic of great interest to engineers in the last two decades. Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP)is considered as one of the most popular and practical solutions for strengthening and retrofitting civil structures, including bridge girders. Several past studies indicated that a significant increase in strength and stiffness can be achieved by using this technology; however, the major drawback of this repairing method is debonding. This research investigated the flexural behavior of simulated lateral damaged pre-stressed concrete bridge girders. Five Tx28 girders were tested up to failure, where 4 of them were simulated to be laterally damaged, and then they were strengthened with presaturated CFRP anchored with different types of anchors.Applied load, the strains along bottom side of the girder and across the height, and deflection at various points of the span data were collected. Test results showed that strengthening of laterally damaged prestressed concrete bridge girders with a presaturated CFRP layer can restore and exceed the original capacity of the damaged girders. The best performance was for the girder that was strengthened using a mechanical anchor with a 7.25% increase in the failure load compared to the control girder. The results also suggest places for anchors to prevent debonding propagation between CFRP and concrete, and mitigate premature debonding failures.

Book excerpt: Every year several prestressed concrete (P/C) girder bridges are damaged by overheight vehicles. Traditional P/C girder repair strategies include beam replacement, internal strand splices, external post-tensioning, and welded steel jackets. Unfortunately, these types of repairs are both labor intensive and vulnerable to future corrosion. One possible alternative to these traditional repair techniques is to repair/strengthen impact damaged P/C girders with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP). These types of materials have the advantage of large strength/weight ratios, excellent corrosion/fatigue properties, and are relatively simple to install. This report describes the experimental results from three full-sized P/C beams that were intentionally damaged to simulate vehicle impacts, repaired, and tested. Damage consisted of removing concrete from the bottom flange and severing a number of prestressing strands. The beams were strengthened/repaired by patching the bottom flange and installing multiple layers unidirectional CFRP to restore the original flexural capacity. CFRP fibers were also used in the transverse direction to help confine the patch material and to prevent premature debonding of the longitudinal sheets. Service level and ultimate load tests were conducted to determine the effectiveness of CFRP strengthening system. A theoretical analysis of the strengthened/repaired beams was also completed. In addition to the full-size beams, a number of smaller specimens were also used to address durability and environmental concerns related to the use CFRP on bridge structures.

Book excerpt: Three different Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) repair techniques are examined to determine how effectively each method can restore the ultimate flexural capacity of impact-damaged prestressed concrete girders. The number of severed prestressing strands and the amount of CFRP repair material applied are varied to create a large repair matrix. The ultimate moment capacity was calculated using the program XTRACT. Capacities were also evaluated using AASHTO and ACI specifications. The prototype girder's geometry is based on an impact-damaged I-girder from a bridge in Eastland County, Texas, which was repaired using CFRP in 2006 using conventional externally bonded CFRP. The CFRP repair methods examined in this study were near surface mounted (NSM) CFRP, externally bonded (EB) CFRP, and bonded post tensioned (bPT) CFRP. The area of the girder available for repair was limited to the bottom soffit for near surface mounted CFRP and bonded post tensioned CFRP; however, the externally bonded CFRP was applied on the bulb as well as the soffit. The range of the repairs examined were approximately 25%, 50%, and 75%, and 100% of the maximum practical amount of CFRP which could be applied based on the girder geometry, ACI guidelines, and manufacturers' recommendations. The geometry of the girder limited the amount of CFRP which could be applied, so the repairs could only completely restore the ultimate girder capacity when very few strands were damaged and the maximum amount of CFRP was used. However, the CFRP techniques were shown effective at restoring some of the lost capacity and thus are an option if only a portion of the lost capacity must be restored. The study also showed that, in some cases, repairs are completely ineffective and the girder capacity is not increased beyond the damaged state. Using the results of this study, engineers can determine when repairing a girder will be effective and the extent to which the repair restores lost capacity.

Book excerpt: As a result of frequent vehicular collisions to prestressed concrete (P/C) bridge structures around the state of Iowa, a project was begun to investigate the capabilities of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) as a method to repair and/or strengthen damaged bridges. A full-sized P/C beam was tested in the laboratory. Impact damage was simulated by removing a section of the bottom flange as well as cutting two prestressing strands, and the beams were repaired using a standard mortar and CFRP. The beam was subjected to cyclic loading simulating traffic before being statistically tested to failure. The load testing showed that the CFRP increased the cracking load and restored a portion of lost flexural strength. Three bridges, southbound I-65 near Altoona, Iowa; westbound IA-34 near Osceola, Iowa; and westbound I-80 near De Soto, Iowa were damaged by impact of overheight vehicles. They were load tested in their damaged condition and then repaired using CFRP. The Altoona bridge was retested to observe the differences in strains and deflections, and some of the results showed minor improvement from the damaged to the repaired tests for certain heavier load cases. A design/application guide was developed based on the Osceola Bridge work for design using CFRP and to provide documentation for repair. This includes a working design software template as well as a design example of a previously designed repair.

Book excerpt: Viable retrofit schemes are necessary to delay or offset replacement of deteriorating concrete bridge members. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) pultruded plates can be especially effective when retrofitting bridge members where stiffness, fatigue resistance, ease of installation, and weathering characteristics are a concern. The research reported in Chapter 1 was undertaken to examine the influence of fatigue loading, prior cracking, and patch materials on flexural performance of reinforced concrete members retrofitted with externally bonded CFRP plates. Moreover, experimental data from the six reinforced concrete beams tested as part of this research are expected to further evaluate available design equations for external retrofitting of reinforced concrete structures. The test results do not suggest a significant effect of fatigue loads; show that existing cracks do not significantly impact the strength of retrofitted members; and indicate that patch materials can reduce the available bond strength, and require additional surface preparation. The research reported in Chapter 2 presents a novel design approach utilizing externally bonded CFRP plates developed in an attempt to overcome construction errors in a member removed from an adjacent box girder bridge. The design methodology was evaluated based on data from testing of a retrofitted girder along with previous tests on as-is girders. Test data suggest appreciable improvements in terms of load carrying capacity and stiffness of the retrofitted girder. The relatively simple retrofit plan developed could have been used to delay replacement of the deficient girders. The research reported in Chapter 3 is aimed at filling some of the gaps in the available test data through retrofitting and testing of a 18.3 m (60 ft) prestressed box girder retrofitted with CFRP composite plates with mechanical anchors. Prior research on the use of CFRPs for retrofitting of existing structures has predominantly focused on mildly reinforced concrete members, and application to prestressed members is rather limited. Moreover, data regarding performance of mechanical anchors for enhancing bond characteristics of CFRP composites are scant. After a description of the design procedure, the test data are used to evaluate the design method, current design recommendations, and performance of mechanical anchors.

Book excerpt: This research program was undertaken to investigate the effects Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) have on the shear strength of under-reinforced, lab-scale prestressed concrete (PC) bridge girders. Six lab-scale PC bridge tee-girders were constructed for testing. Two girders were shear sufficient according to today's standards. The remaining four girders were shear deficient and required upgrade in order to achieve the same level of shear capacity as the "shear-sufficient girders." The shear strengthening of these girders was performed using CFRP laminates applied by manual lay-up and Near Surface Mounted CFRP bars. All beams, with exception of the control one (i.e., a shear-deficient beam), were also strengthened in flexure using CFRP laminates. The observed failure mode of all strengthened beams was CFRP debonding. The flexural FRP laminate on each girder debonded before other failure modes could be experienced. Despite this, the three shear-strengthened girders did achieve a significant increase in load capacity over the control girder.

Book excerpt: Many of the existing bridges are in need of repair and strengthening due to various reasons including design flaws, fatigue and deterioration of steel reinforcement, increase in traffic volume, and accidental impact loads during collisions between vehicles and bridge girders or piers. The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials to repair and strengthen the deficient infrastructures has become very popular due to FRP's well known advantages such as high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, light weight, and ease of applications. This paper presents a review of existing experimental investigations and field applications of FRP-strengthened reinforced concrete structures. Various FRP retrofit techniques are also discussed. A Finite Element Model (FEM) of a prestressed reinforced concrete beam is modeled based off an experimentally tested beam. The model is intentionally damaged by cutting two prestressing strands and one mild steel bar. The beam is repaired with three layers of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) to recover the original design strength of the beam.

Book excerpt: Many bridges are handling heavier loads than those expected at design, making it increasingly necessary to strengthen existing members or conduct repairs on damaged structural members. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) materials have been broadly used to repair and strengthen reinforced concrete structures. Using CFRP materials as the strengthening material is an excellent solution because of their mechanical properties. CFRP has properties of high strength, corrosion resistance, and light weight. CFRP materials are being widely used for shear and flexural strengthening. Most studies have focused on uni-directional layout of CFRP strips in high shear regions of beams. Recent shear tests on full-scale I-girders have shown that the use of bi-directional CFRP layouts with CFRP anchors led to much higher shear strength increases than when using uni-directional layouts. The objective of the study is to determine the mechanism that governs shear strengthening of bridge girders using bi-directional CFRP and, in doing so, demonstrate the feasibility of using bi-directional CFRP for shear strengthening of large bridge I- and U-beams. Small-scale panel tests have been conducted to investigate parameters that influence the shear strength provided by bi-directional CFRP layouts. Panels were tested under compressive forces to simulate the compression struts that develop in the webs of I-beams. The applied loads generated bottle-shaped compressive struts. CFRP anchors were used to prevent early failure due to CFRP strip delamination from the panel surface. The panels, while not fully reproducing the boundary condition of girder webs, were tested ahead of full-scale girders to investigate a wide range of parameters in a cost-effective manner. The variables considered include the amount of CFRP and steel reinforcement, the inclination of CFRP fibers, and the layout and spacing of CFRP strips. The panel tests provide qualitative comparisons between the influence of the various parameters. The relative strength contributions of CFRP strips, steel stirrups, and concrete were evaluated.
