To celebrate his seventieth birthday, a group of distinguished friends and colleagues have written this important series of original and perceptive essays on the twin themes of making and remaking Christian doctrine. The topics covered in this thought-provoking collection range from the notion of divine action in Hebrew Wisdom literature to reflections on the nature of the ministry, from the concept of God and the doctrines of Christology and of the Trinity to the character of theological reflection, and from revelation and tradition to the "lex orandi," the nature of interpretation in religion and the historical basis of theological understanding.

Download or read book The Making of Christian Doctrine written by Maurice Wiles and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1967-07 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A paperback edition of this well-known study. Since its first publication in 1967 this book has aroused a lively debate among theologians and practicising clergy. The author had since returned to the discussion (The Remaking of Christian Doctrine, SCM Press 1974) and has stressed the contemporary need to define and develop Christian doctrine. In the earlier work Professor Wiles asks how the early Church fathers' doctrinal affirmations - expressed for example in the Nicene Creed and Chalcedonian Definition - remain valid today when the framework of the fathers' learning and discourse has disappeared. Doctrine was necessary, he argues, to answer objections to Christianity in a largely non-Christian world, to tackle the problem of heresy and to satisfy the desire of Christians to express their faith more deeply. He also considers the sources of doctrinal reasoning - Scripture, the practice of worship and the nature of salvation. These sources are still vital to any development of Christian doctrine today and the author concludes his study with a call for 'the continuation of the same task of interpreting the Church's Scriptures, her worship and her experience of salvation'.

Book excerpt: In this volume, Professor Wiles continues the questioning of the Christian tradition made familiar through The Remaking of Christian Doctrine in a number of essays, some of which appear in print here for the first time. A first group defines the nature of the task of the critical theologian, and explores the way in which he pursues it in two important areas. Then two papers, The Patristic Appeal to Tradition' and 'Historical Religion' discuss the place of tradition in Christianity. A final group, prefaced by an essay on the Holy Spirit, considers the Bible and the sacraments as purveyors of tradition: The Uses of Holy Scripture', 'Eucharistic Theology-The Value of Diversity', and 'Sacramental Unity in the Early Church.'

Book Synopsis God's Action in the World by : Maurice Wiles
Download or read book God's Action in the World written by Maurice Wiles and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God act in the world? Does he affect what happens to us in the varied experiences of our daily life? If so, in what ways and by what means? In an age when so many of the particular cases in which communities or individuals find themselves led to speak of God's acting prove to be cases which appear to others both morally and spiritually unacceptable, we need to give thought to the deeper underlying issue. Can God be said to act in the world at all? Does God even exist? The nature of God's action is clearly of the utmost importance for Christians, because they claim that God does act in the world and has acted specifically in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But how does his action here relate to his action elsewhere? How do we discern it? These questions lead Professor Wiles to discuss the nature of creation, the origin of evil, providence in public and private history, and finally God's action in Christ and in us. Concerned to give a consistent overall interpretation, he provides answers which at the same time question much current Christian thinking.
Book Synopsis Faith and the Mystery of God by : Maurice Wiles
Download or read book Faith and the Mystery of God written by Maurice Wiles and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a lucid examination of the relation between faith and reason in light of the varied forms assumed by Christianity in the past as well as in the present. The backdrop for the examination is change--change in theology, church life, and society itself--and the purpose of the examination is to recall the Christian community to its true function as a unifying force in the world. In an effort to enlighten our future, Wiles shows how the concept of God as Spirit points toward a way of understanding God that does substantial justice both to the main insights of traditional faith and to the critical challenges of contemporary reflection. Faith and the Mystery of God delineates an intimately personal view of Christian faith along with grounds for holding it. Thus it is intended to help people affirm their belief in God in the modern world--in the face of all odds.

Book Synopsis The Christian Fathers by : Maurice F. Wiles
Download or read book The Christian Fathers written by Maurice F. Wiles and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Wiles has achieved what might almost be termed notoriety for his controversial studies The Making of Christian Doctrine and The Remaking of Christian Doctrine, which have raised far-reaching questions about the meaning and validity of much traditional Christian teaching. As he himself has pointed out, however, the early Christian Fathers are not well-known today, and anyone involved in a discussion of the value of the scheme of theology which they evolved needs at least to know what that scheme was. This book offers an account of patristic thinking which explores the way in which the Fathers considered the main questions of Christian belief: the image of God, the divine Christ, the incarnation, sin and salvation, the sacraments, the church and ethics. Professor Wiles' lucid and sympathetic account will show that he was far more than an iconoclast and provided one of the best available introductions to its theme.
