Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reliquary, Vol. 8: Quarterly Archaeological Journal and Review; A Depository for Precious Relics Legendary, Biographical, and Historical; Illustrative of the Habits, Customs, and Pursuits, of Our Forefathers; 1867-8 Nine years ago, when I first projected 'f the reliquary, I announced my intention of making it not only a serial of local interest, but one which Shall be of real value and service to the general historian, the archaeologist, the biographer, the genealogist, the artist, and the topographer, and to men of science and letters in every walk Of life; and shall at the same time afford entertainment and instruction to every class of readers. I took Derbyshire, for many cogent reasons. As my centre, and through it determined upon illustrating as far as might be, the kingdom at large - I considered that county to be in fact but like a stone thrown in the water, and SO to become at once the centre and the cause Of constantly increasing and expanding circles. As time has gone on those circles have, year by year, and month by month, been increasing, until now at the close of my eighth volume, I find them touching the banks - the very confines Of the kingdom - ou every Slde, and embracing within their radius every county, and every nook and corner in our land. Derbyshire was, as I have said, the original groundwork of my design, but as time has gone on, and my plans have become more and more developed, the articles have illustrated every county in the kingdom, and thus my aim ultimately to make the reliquary the leading Archaeological Journal Of the day, has been to a large and satis factory extent carried out; and it is with no little pride and satisfaction that I point to the eight volumes now completed, as evidence of the faith with which I have kept my promises in the past, and as earnest Of what I trust in the future to do. Since the completion of my last volume the Gentleman's Magazine -the oldest and most venerable Of journals, and for an almost incredible time the only antiquarian magazine in existence - has changed its stately, dignified, and courtly dress of solid and substantial reading, for the daub and tinsel' of fiction and sensation. Sylvanus Urban, that delightful mythic personage, whose name is dear to every historian and every antiquary, has ceased to exist as Of Old, and has become but a subordinate of the lowest order where once be ruled supreme. To Oct., 1894 The church consists of a nave with aisles, a chancel, a western tower (disengaged), and a south porch. The nave represents the body of the early church, as its eastern, western, and northern walls remain in great part. Externally the old quoins are to be seen more or less distinctly at all the four angles, the size of the old nave and the thickness of its walls can therefore be determined with precision. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a century, the Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard (1813–55) has been at the center of a number of important discussions, concerning not only philosophy and theology, but also, more recently, fields such as social thought, psychology, and contemporary aesthetics, especially literary theory. Despite his relatively short life, Kierkegaard was an extraordinarily prolific writer, as attested to by the 26-volume Princeton University Press edition of all of his published writings. But Kierkegaard left behind nearly as much unpublished writing, most of which consists of what are called his "journals and notebooks." Kierkegaard has long been recognized as one of history's great journal keepers, but only rather small portions of his journals and notebooks are what we usually understand by the term "diaries." By far the greater part of Kierkegaard’s journals and notebooks consists of reflections on a myriad of subjects—philosophical, religious, political, personal. Studying his journals and notebooks takes us into his workshop, where we can see his entire universe of thought. We can witness the genesis of his published works, to be sure—but we can also see whole galaxies of concepts, new insights, and fragments, large and small, of partially (or almost entirely) completed but unpublished works. Kierkegaard’s Journals and Notebooks enables us to see the thinker in dialogue with his times and with himself. Kierkegaard wrote his journals in a two-column format, one for his initial entries and the second for the extensive marginal comments that he added later. This edition of the journals reproduces this format, includes several photographs of original manuscript pages, and contains extensive scholarly commentary on the various entries and on the history of the manuscripts being reproduced. Volume 8 of this 11-volume series includes five of Kierkegaard’s important "NB" journals (Journals NB21 through NB25), which cover the period from September 1850 to June 1852, and which show Kierkegaard alternately in polemical and reflective postures. The polemics emerge principally in Kierkegaard’s opposition to the increasing infiltration of Christianity by worldly concerns, a development that in his view had accelerated significantly in the aftermath of the political and social changes wrought by the Revolution of 1848. Kierkegaard understood the corrupting of Christianity to be in the interest of the powers that be, and he directed his criticism at politicians, the press, and especially the Danish Church itself, particularly church officials who claimed to be "reformers." On the reflective side, Kierkegaard delves into a number of authors and religious figures, some of them for the first time, including Montaigne, Pascal, Seneca, Savonarola, Wesley, and F. W. Newman. These journals also contain Kierkegaard’s thoughts on the decisions surrounding the publication of the "Anti-Climacus" writings: The Sickness unto Death and especially Practice in Christianity. Kierkegaard’s reader gets the sense both of a gathering storm—by the close of the last journal in this volume, the famous "attack on Christendom" is less than three years away—and a certain hesitancy: What needs reforming, Kierkegaard insists, is not "the doctrine" or "the Church," but "existences," i.e., lives.

Excerpt: ...Some of them had read his papers in The Antiquary, in which he described the furniture of Sussex alms-houses. Fortunately, they had Mr. Dawson, to whom they were indebted for that collection. Mr. Dawson had really worked night and day in order to make it complete and as interesting as possible to the general public. Sussex people would always feel most grateful to him for forming that collection and arranging that show of what Sussex had been able to produce--its greatest industry, in fact, but now, unfortunately, no more. Perhaps not unfortunately, however, for their beautiful Sussex must then have been filled with smoke from the furnaces, and they had heard how the nightingales were disturbed by the beating of the hammers. England was indebted to Sussex for its iron work. It was curious how little remained of the actual furnaces and works. They saw how streams were dammed up to supply power for the bellows and hammers, but there were seemingly no buildings in Sussex left to show what the old forges were like. They knew now that all England was indebted to Sussex for its weapons of war--the arrows which won at Crecy, for instance, the heads of which, at least, were forged in Sussex; and, in later times, how the first cannon and cannon balls were made in Sussex also. Their exhibition was rather for the works of peace and quietness, such as the furniture of houses. It was a remarkable thing that Sussex not only produced iron, but it had also utilised that iron in ways other counties had not. They had many peculiarities in Sussex, such as the arrangement of their fire-places. He referred to the old fire dogs. There were also the means of lighting and holding which their forefathers used for their candles and rush lights. There were...
