Book Synopsis The Mechanics of Earthquakes and Faulting by : Christopher H. Scholz
Download or read book The Mechanics of Earthquakes and Faulting written by Christopher H. Scholz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-02 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of earthquakes and faulting processes has developed significantly since publication of the successful first edition of this book in 1990. This revised edition, first published in 2002, was therefore thoroughly up-dated whilst maintaining and developing the two major themes of the first edition. The first of these themes is the connection between fault and earthquake mechanics, including fault scaling laws, the nature of fault populations, and how these result from the processes of fault growth and interaction. The second major theme is the central role of the rate-state friction laws in earthquake mechanics, which provide a unifying framework within which a wide range of faulting phenomena can be interpreted. With the inclusion of two chapters explaining brittle fracture and rock friction from first principles, this book is written at a level which will appeal to graduate students and research scientists in the fields of seismology, physics, geology, geodesy and rock mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthquakes are nearly unique among natural phenomena - they affect virtually everything within a region, from massive buildings and bridges, down to the furnishings within a home. Successful earthquake engineering therefore requires a broad background in subjects, ranging from the geologic causes and effects of earthquakes to understanding the imp

Book excerpt: This trip backward in time capsulizes in a general way the geologic development of the area that is now northern Alaska. The Cretaceous through Recent history is predominantly one of erosion of the ancient Brooks Range and filling of the Colville Geosyncline under processes like those in Operation today. All the rocks older than Jurassic, however, were deposited far from their present sites. One of the intriguing tectonic puzzles involves the geographic positions and relative timing of events that occurred during the orogeny that built the Brooks Range. I suggest that pre-Cretaceous deposition took place far to the north along the western margin of the Caledonides. Subsequently, the region that is now northern Alaska moved southward and impinged upon a northward moving plate, or plates, from the Pacific region. Interactions between these two major parts of the earth's crust produced the Brooks Range during the Jurassic. Later developments reflect continuing readjustments of the northern third of of thrust Alaska as southward movement was dissipated in diverse systems faulting and lateral displacement. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am indebted to many colleagues who, during the past 30 years, shared with me the excitement and pleasures of exploring the geology of northern Alaska. Among these are W. P. Brosge, H. N. Reiser, R. L. Detterman, A. K. Armstrong, A. L. Bowsher, E. G. Sable, I. L. Tailleur, C. G. Mull, M. D. Mangus, A. H. Lachenbruch, M. C. Lachenbruch, R. L. Morris, C. J.

Book Synopsis Continental and Oceanic Rifts by : Inter-Union Commission on Geodynamics. Working Group 4
Download or read book Continental and Oceanic Rifts written by Inter-Union Commission on Geodynamics. Working Group 4 and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1982 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geodynamics Series, Volume 8. During the past decade of the International Geodynamics Program many publications dealing with specific rift areas of the Earth's surface have appeared. Most of them followed symposia that were held in the respective rift zones. Among the rifts thus treated are the Rhinegraben, Afar, Iceland, the Baikal rift, the Oslo paleorift, the Rio Grande rift and the Dead Sea rift. Furthermore, publications dealing with studies of the ocean floor have discussed many oceanic rift areas.

Book Synopsis Plate Boundary Zones by : Seth Stein
Download or read book Plate Boundary Zones written by Seth Stein and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 2002-01-21 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects some recent studies on the motions, mechanics, and earthquakes that take place within plate boundary zones. Many of the studies reflect advances made possible by the development of space geodetic techniques. Among the topics of the 21 papers are tectonic processes in the Eurasian-African plate boundary zone, the structure of the Dead Sea basin, the January 2001 Bhuj earthquake in India, geological investigations of the Kamchatka region in Russia, and crustal shortening and extension in the central Andes.
