At the core, economically disadvantaged students are achieving at lower levels than their counterparts and school leaders are left searching for answers. The purpose of this study was to determine if self-efficacy in economically disadvantaged students has a positive effect on student achievement. Research has been compiled that examines factors that influence student achievement, but studies focused on the self-efficacy of economically disadvantaged students are limited. This mixed-methods study intended to provide information that will be useful for all stakeholders that contribute to the success of economically disadvantaged students. This study revealed a significant difference in the performance of high self-efficacy economically disadvantaged students and low self-efficacy economically disadvantaged students on the 4th grade reading STAAR examination. High self-efficacy economically disadvantaged students consistently outperformed low self-efficacy counterparts. Additionally, responses from a focus group interview pointed to key areas that educators can address when developing self-efficacy in economically disadvantaged students and adults. This information can be utilized to guide conversations with students, develop the skills of teachers and parents, and adjust the perceptions of economically disadvantaged students in our schools.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of middle school students particularly focusing on the academic achievement of economically disadvantaged students. Existing data show that there is an increasing cohort of school children experiencing poverty, either short or long term. For poor middle school students, the risk for school failure is amplified by the general risks associated with middle school transition and early adolescence development. The cumulative nature of these risks is often associated with undesirable school outcomes including grade retention, behavior problems, absenteeism, delinquency, teenage pregnancy, school dropout, fewer years of schooling, and lower academic achievement. However, there is evidence that some students succeed in spite of adversity, which is often attributed to protective factors present in the students' own immediate environment -- school, home, and community. This current study, therefore, examined the relationship between two potential protective factors--parent involvement and school belonging--and student achievement. Previous research has established that parent involvement and school belonging are both associated with positive school outcomes including academic motivation, self-efficacy, internal locus of control, pro-social and on-task behavior, school engagement, educational aspirations and expectations, and better academic achievement. Consequently, this study examined three main questions: (a) How is parental involvement associated with academic achievement for economically disadvantaged eighth grade students? (b) How school belonging associated with academic achievement for economically disadvantaged eighth grade students? (c) Do the relations between parent involvement, school belonging, and eighth grade achievement vary as a function of prior achievement and middle school? To answer these research questions, this study used the nationally representative longitudinal data from Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten (ECLS-K) Class of 1998/99. The findings for this study showed that when parent involvement and school belonging were considered together, the association between parent involvement and student achievement diminished while school belonging consistently emerged as a significant predictor of achievement. However, while school belonging emerged as a significant predictor of achievement, this study established that students' prior achievement was the single strong and significant factor explaining achievement for poor eighth grade students.

Taking a cue from other studies that have attracted little scholarly and which have showed students pointing at psychological factors as having the greatest effect on their academic achievement, this study set out to examine the influence of two of such factors - perceived self-efficacy and locus of control - on two identical groups of students. The consistent difference in the scores between these two groups of students on the instruments devised to measure the two factors identified the so-called soft variables - perceived self-efficacy and locus of control - as trumping all other factors and as worthy of more attention by researchers as well as stakeholders in education.

Book excerpt: In today's society, students from urban environments are often exposed to higher rates of crime and violence, poverty, school dropout, incarceration, substance abuse, and many other factors that are associated with increased risk for social and/or emotional problems (Babbitt & Byrne, 1999; Jeffries, 2000; Schensul, 1998; Van Horn, 1999). Many of these factors interfere with the learning and educational process of urban adolescent students. Although many urban adolescents face similar risk factors, some students manage to overcome the stressors and show positive adaptation in the face of adversity. Unfortunately, these success stories are far too often the exception, rather than the norm or the expectation. Barbarin (1992) noted that the way African-American children are able to survive and thrive in the face of adversity clearly requires more attention. The current study explored this phenomenon by examining the relationships between self-efficacy, resilience and achievement, and provides empirical data to the scant research literature on African-American urban adolescents. The present study examined the relationships between self-efficacy, resilience and academic achievement among African-American urban high school students in Washington, DC. The study hypothesized positive relationships between self-efficacy, resilience and achievement, and also examined the contribution of self-efficacy and resilience in predicting academic achievement. Collected data were analyzed using correlation statistics, multiple regression analyses and analysis of variance. The study further explored the contributory effect of select demographic variables (i.e. authoritative parenting, role models, and socioeconomic status) on the variance in self-efficacy and resilience. Results indicated that resilience was significantly and positively correlated with achievement, self-efficacy and authoritative parenting. Additionally, authoritative parenting was significantly and positively correlated with achievement, influential role models, and self-efficacy. Authoritative parenting also emerged as a significant predictor of self-efficacy and resilience. Based on the findings of the current study, resilience and authoritative parenting may be protective factors for African-American urban youth. Strategies and interventions developed to support and promote resilience and authoritative parenting are likely to have implications for positive outcomes, which may also mitigate risk factors and contribute to lessening the achievement gap among cultural groups. Implications for future research and intervention are discussed.

Book excerpt: The present research explored the influences of self-efficacy, delinquency, and academic aspirations on the academic achievement of 935 high school students from ten high schools in two Australian capital cities (Brisbane and Perth). It was predicted that while academic and social self-efficacy and academic aspirations would have a positive impact on the academic achievement of high school students, self-regulatory efficacy and delinquency would have a negative impact. More specifically, we tested three competing models: the hypothesized mediated model of the mediational effects of academic aspirations and delinquency from academic, social and self-regulatory self-efficacy to academic achievement; a partially mediated model in which the direct effects of academic, social and self-regulatory self-efficacy on academic achievement were tested as well as the mediational effects of aspirations and delinquency; and a non-mediated model where direct paths from academic, social and self-regulatory self-efficacy to academic achievement were tested. Participants were administered the Children's Self-Efficacy Scale (Bandura, 1990); the Adapted Self-Report Delinquency Scale (Revised) (Carroll, Durkin, Houghton, & Hattie, 1996), and the Children's Academic Aspirations Scale (Bandura, 1996). For academic achievement, teachers provided midyear scores for each student in English. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to establish and define the relationships between the constructs and the specific factors that comprised these variables and to test the three alternative models. Of the three models, the partially mediated model showed the best fit to the data, although age and socio-economic status (SES) were not significantly related to delinquency, and age and academic aspirations were not significantly related to academic achievement. Academic self-efficacy and academic achievement were strongly related suggesting a direct causal relationship between these two constructs.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy and academic achievement for Hispanic, Black, and White students. Self-efficacy has been studied immensely related to performance and academic achievement. However, little focus has been placed on general academic achievement across the curriculum. In this quantitative study, the researcher sought to establish a correlation between academic achievement and self-efficacy across racial, gender, and socioeconomic lines using non-probabilistic sampling techniques and surveying. Self-efficacy was studied in the context of Bandura's and other self-efficacy scholars' theories and measured using the Morgan-Jinks Student Efficacy Scale. The results suggested a strong correlational relationship between self-efficacy and academic achievement for Hispanic, Black, and White participants. Analysis failed to produce significant results related to the relationship between gender, socioeconomic status, and self-efficacy. Additionally, no significant differences were found in the proportion of low achieving and low self-efficacy students across the three racial groups. Results from this study may provide specific information to help teachers work with low achieving and low self-efficacy students to increase academic achievement. This study will hopefully inspire future studies to implement strategies aimed at increasing self-efficacy and academic achievement as well studies incorporating other demographic groups.
