This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides science teacher educators and science educational researchers with a current overview on the roles of beliefs in science education settings. There are four focal areas in the book: an overview of this field of research, lines of research, implications for policy, and implications for educators. Within each of these areas there are specific explorations that examine important areas such as, the roles of beliefs in teaching and learning, the impact of beliefs on student achievement, and ways in which beliefs are connected to teacher actions in the classroom. Throughout all of these discussions, there is a focus on international perspectives. Those reading this book can use the research presented to consider how to confront, challenge, and cultivate beliefs during the teacher professional development process.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The underlying beliefs and assumptions that teachers hold regarding how students learn science are likely to influence their classroom instruction in addition to their knowledge of best practices. Currently, inquiry instructional strategies are considered best practices for secondary science education, especially in secondary alternative school settings (Bennett & Park, 2011) where curriculum focuses on both the personal and educational attributes gained by understanding the scientific process as a problem-solving method. However, despite the promotion of inquiry science as standard practice in the alternative classroom, the innate challenges of teaching the alternative student often further complicates the ability of the teacher to provide true inquiry science education. In this investigation, I attempt to examine the beliefs and practices of an alternative high school science teacher. Data collection included teacher interviews, classroom observations, and collection of lesson artifacts. Data was then categorized into four categories: (1) teacher definition of inquiry and the teacher's level of agreement that inquiry practices are best practices for alternative students, (2) understanding of how students learn best, (3) perceived supports for implementing inquiry, and (4) perceived barriers for implementing inquiry. Interview data and classroom observations of instructional strategies exposed misalignment between teacher's beliefs regarding inquiry science pedagogy and classroom practice leading to barriers in inquiry science implementation. These misalignments between the teacher's stated beliefs and instructional practices were related to her perceived areas of weakness, time constraints, and low level of agreement that inquiry instruction is best practice for alternative high school students' science education."--Boise State University ScholarWorks.

Download or read book Teacher Beliefs and Classroom Performance written by James Raths and published by IAP. This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of Advances in Teacher Education is about beliefs held by teachers and addresses the important topic of teacher beliefs from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. Most of the authors who have contributed to this collection of essays assume that beliefs are propositions that are felt to be true by the person embracing them, but that do not necessarily rest on the kind of evidence that justifies the use of the term “knowledge.” Teacher beliefs are an important topic because it is hypothesized that teachers and teacher candidates use them to shape the information they receive from formal teacher preparation and to direct subsequent decision-making in the classroom.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between teachers' knowledge and beliefs about inquiry and their classroom teaching practices in mi ddle and high school science classes. Specifically, the study attempted to answe r the following questions: (1) What are teachers' beliefs and knowledge about in quiry? (2) What are teachers' teaching related classroom practices? (3) Do teach ers' knowledge and beliefs about inquiry relate to their science classroom pract ices? The study sample was drawn from schools in the City of Beirut. To answer t he first question, teachers were asked to fill out two questionnaires, one open- ended and another of the Likert-type, that gauge their beliefs and knowledge abo ut inquiry. To answer the second question, classroom observations were conducted to document actual teaching strategies. Frequencies and descriptive statistics were generated from the data collected in the Likert-type questionnaire and were used to construct profiles for each of the teachers based on their knowledge an d beliefs about inquiry. Data from the open-ended questionnaire were used to val idate characteristics of the profiles. Consequently, teachers were categorized b ased on their profiles. Data from observations were used to characterize each of the teachers' classroom teaching practices. Finally, to answer the third questi on, teachers' profiles and classroom practices were investigated to identify rel ationships between teachers' beliefs and knowledge and their teaching practices. Results showed that most teachers had restricted views of the nature of scienc e and had unfavorable beliefs and attitudes about inquiry. Moreover, there did n ot seem to be a relationship between teachers' beliefs, views of the nature of s cience, and their classroom practices.

Book Synopsis Science Teacher Beliefs, Knowledge, and Skill in Accommodating and Modifying Curriculum for Students with Disabilities by : Charlotte Waters
Download or read book Science Teacher Beliefs, Knowledge, and Skill in Accommodating and Modifying Curriculum for Students with Disabilities written by Charlotte Waters and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative research study was conducted to investigate the beliefs, knowledge, and skills of science teachers as they accommodated and modified curriculum for students with disabilities. Four high school science teachers participated in interviews, classroom observations, and artifact collection to provide information about how their beliefs, knowledge, and skills influenced the accommodations and modifications to curriculum they used for students with disabilities. Previous studies have focused on accommodations and modifications made at the elementary and middle school level leaving a gap at the high school level. Other studies have presented claims about science teacher beliefs about students with disabilities. This study was designed to link science teacher beliefs to their actions in accommodating and modifying curriculum at the high school level. Data that emerged from the interviews, classroom observations, and artifacts led to three major claims, (1) science teachers held beliefs that moved them to go beyond the accommodations listed in the IEP and create strategies and accommodations that they believed would be more helpful for students with disabilities, (2) science teachers with high teacher efficacy have several traits that support students with disabilities through accommodations and modifications of curriculum as they learn science, (3) teacher-student relationships are critical in understanding how to accommodate for students with disabilities in science classrooms.
