Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to determine how racial identity of African American college students can impact their ability to assimilate on predominately White college campuses to the point of hindering their retention. This study was a sequential explanatory mixed method study. Phase one of the study was a quantitative survey consisting of 25 questions that was completed by N=125 African American students attending a Predominately White University in the Mid-West. Phase two of the study was a convenience sample of thirteen African American students living on and off campus. The following research questions were addressed to explore the research topic. (1) How does racial identity impact African American college students' ability to assimilate at a predominately White university with a high enrollment of African American college students? (2) How do African American college students perceive their college/university's commitment to them? (3) How do African American college students perceive their racial identity impacting their lives? The findings of the study showed that the complexities of racism and stereotypical perceptions made the process of assimilating into the college environment holistic, including social, academic, internal and external variables that impacted their ability to assimilate and form relationships needed to have a well-rounded college experience. However, many of the students interviewed felt some of the stereotypical perceptions are sometimes perpetuated by the actions of their Black peers. During a few of the interviews, students (N=7) described their dismay with the behavior that some of their peers exhibited. The participants that were interviewed felt that the students' success should be a shared responsibility. It should be up to the students to be accountable; one participant stated "too often people want to blame others for things that happen to them." Furthermore, he explained that he takes full responsibility for the 2.0 grade point he had at the end of the last semester, but he is now looking at a 3.2 for this semester. Many of the students expressed that they did feel the faculty and staff ratio could be more representative of the African American population. The students also felt the administration could do more to bring the students together as a whole, the students of color and the White students. The consensus of the interviews was that Black people as a whole, in the eyes of the boarder society, are not respected nor looked at as assets. Many of the students interviewed felt that if the Black students and the White students had more opportunities to engage outside of the classroom, they may see Blacks beyond the stereotypical perceptions.

Although several studies have explored the issue of Black students' academic persistence in colleges and universities, there is little agreement as to (a) the factors that influence academic persistence or (b) the definition of academic persistence of Black college students. Moreover, the majority of these studies have ignored the possible significance of the students' status as a racial minority on their adjustment to college. Instead, the major focus of these studies has been the relative influence on academic persistence of cognitive or noncognitive factors other than race-related status. In the present study, Black students' racial identity attitudes (Preencounter, Encounter, Immersion-Emersion, and Internalization) were used to examine the extent to which they contributed to the prediction of academic persistence (defined as intent to drop-out, college grade point average and academic statuses) at a predominantly White university beyond what was predicted by the students' gender and tradititional precollegiate adademic or cognitive information (high school grade point averages and SAT scores). The current study addressed a question extant in existing literature: the extent to which traditional precollegiate cognitive factors and noncognitive factors (racial identity attitudes) predict academic persistence of Black students at a predominantly White university.

Book excerpt: The comparative experiences of first generation and non-first generation Black students at predominately White institutions were examined to gain information about the predictors and relationships between adjustment (including academic and personal-emotional) coping (4 styles), race-related stress, and racial identity development (6 levels). Results from a simultaneous multiple regression revealed a significant positive adjustment profile that included being non-first generation, low disengagement coping, problem-oriented coping, and low pre-encounter self-hatred racial identity development. The standardized coefficients for the first canonical analyses indicated significant relationships between pre-encounter self-hatred and low personal-emotional adjustment; and for the second, low disengagement coping and personal-emotional adjustment. For each of the canonical correlations, canonical variable loadings revealed additional contributing variable. These data add to the current body of knowledge and are valuable for universities, mental health professionals, and the future development of resources to assist this population of students.

Extant research reveals the harmful and cumulative effects of racial microaggressions (Sue, Nadal, et al., 2008). Researchers have also found a link between the experiences of African American students and negative psychological, health, and educational outcomes (Solórzano, Ceja, & Yosso, 2000; Sue, 2010; Watkins, Labarrie, & Appio, 2010). Much research has been done on people of color's experiences with racial microaggressions; however, few studies have given attention to why some African American college students are able to excel in microaggressive academic environments while others do not. The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent African American students at a predominantly White institution experience racial microaggression in the classroom as well as the frequency with which various types of microaggressions are encountered. A secondary purpose was to identify if there is a relationship between microaggressive encounters and academic outcomes. The final purpose was to explore whether racial identity status moderates the relationship between microaggressions and academic outcomes. Forty-seven undergraduate students participated in this study. Results indicated that students' backgrounds impact how they handle microaggressive behaviors. The study comprised 89 first-generation African American male college students attending five public institutions of higher education in the northern geographical region of the United States. The data were collected using the Academic Self-efficacy Scale (ases), Black Racial Identity Attitude Scale (brias), and a demographic questionnaire. The study employed three hypotheses: (a) academic self-efficacy would independently predict gpa; (b) racial identity would independently predict gpa; and (c) academic self-efficacy and racial identity combined would predict gpa. Of the three hypotheses, racial identity was the only variable that did not significantly predict gpa. This research potentially can add to the existing body of retention literature on first-generation African American male college students, most particularly on predominantly White campuses. It might also prove useful for parents, educators, and community leaders wishing to develop strategies and techniques that will foster academic resiliency among this student population.
