Book excerpt: This study examined the association between night sweats and 2-year BMD change using data collected from 1426 women (aged 40-60) recruited into the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study. Linear regression analyses showed significantly greater bone loss among women reporting severe night sweats, and>5 night sweats in the past two weeks compared to those without night sweats at two out of three BMD sites in unadjusted models. After adjusting for covariates (age, BMI, smoking, exercise, time since last period, increase in premenstrual symptoms, and estrogen use), only the difference at the femoral neck in the night sweat frequency and intensity analysis remained significant. The magnitude of this difference was small and may not be clinically important. We do not recommend using night sweats to identify women aged 40-60 who are at increased risk of bone loss. Future work is needed to clarify the association between vasomotor symptoms and bone loss.
