Career Stress in Changing Times is an exciting volume that covers the entire career cycle, from beginning through mid-career dilemmas to the retirement transition. Many key career issues and stressors--as they are experienced during each stage of one’s career--are examined. Experts also explore the major social and cultural forces that influence careers and will continue to do so in the next century, including women’s influx into the workplace, the decline of blue-collar labor, the changing demographics of our nation, and the movement toward a world economy. Career Stress in Changing Times is ideal for individuals involved in career planning activities, professionals counseling people engaged in career planning transitions, and educators involved in teaching career planning seminars. This volume is unique in that it blends the work of academic researchers with that of practitioners on the firing line; it blends theoretical and conceptual work with empirical, data-based research as well as with the results of in-depth interviews and reports from the direct experience of practitioners.

Book excerpt: Neurotoxicity and Developmental Disabilities is a comprehensive review of the relationship between neurotoxicity and mental retardation. Though individual chapters each focus on a specific toxin, the chapters jointly emphasize that many variables influence the developmental outcomes following exposure to neurotoxicants, including timing of exposure, pattern of exposure, dose, susceptibility, and environmental conditions. Coverage includes the developmental consequences of maternal exposure to methyl mercury, and direct exposure to PCBs and Dioxins, lead, methanol, parental smoking, pthalates and pesticides. Additional chapters review research on environmental agents and autism, and assessment studies of exposure. This thematic volume in the International Review of Research in Mental Retardation begins with forewords by Stephen R. Schroeder, and series editor Laraine Glidden.

Book excerpt: The new U.S. national standards movement has pushed us at “warp speed” from Common Core curriculum standards to updated assessments for college readiness, but we have not fully examined what it means to be college ready. Why is it that roughly half of all high school students need remedial classes before being considered ready for college-level work? Current public policies aim to eliminate the need for remedial college classes by ratcheting up instruction and expectations at the K-12 level, but if we do not find out what these students are missing, how can we expect to be successful? For higher education scholars and practitioners and those generally interested in the future of college, this book helps tell a novel story about the transition to college, from the perspective of an experienced college professor. The first-year experience is conceptualized as a two-way relationship between students and colleges, involving introductions, resistance or acceptance, collaboration and exchange of ideas, and learning. There are both success stories and stories that end in a parting of ways. These stories show what college readiness really means and offer valuable insights about the academic, social, monetary and other forces that can overwhelm the typical college-bound student. Higher education scholars and professionals will benefit from these rich and detailed accounts as they help shape the landscape of 21st century college readiness.

Book excerpt: Advances in Clinical Child Psychology continues to bring to its readers scholarly papers that review and update advances in diverse areas of research with children. The focus on basic and applied work with chil dren encompasses several disciplines and professions. This volume, the fifth in the series, continues to expand the range of topics and specialty areas represented by the contributors. In the present volume, contribu tions address several different topics related to diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of childhood disorders. Taxonomy, nosology, and assess ment of childhood behavioral problems, and social and emotional ad justment are discussed. Contributions also address recent advances re lated to specific disorders including childhood depression, conduct disorders, and hyperactivity. Factors that impinge on child development and have implications for social adjustment and psychopathology are covered in separate contributions on the effects of divorce and life events as stressors in general. Treatment techniques are also covered in the present volume. A separate contribution on pharmacotherapy de tails the latest advances and outstanding issues in that field. Problem solving therapy is also covered in a contribution on the cognitive bases of social adjustment in children. As with previous volumes, we would like to express our gratitude to several persons. Foremost are the contributors whose scholarship and expertise contributed fundamentally to this volume, as well as the over all series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneer in the field of behavioral medicine, the late Thomas H. Holmes developed a set of scales that measured the impact of life changes and events on a person's health, particularly stress-related disorders. This volume collects for the first time the key research studies that emanated from the Holmes laboratory at the University of Washington from 1957 through 1981. Designed to serve as a reference book and a resource for students and scholars interested in life change research, Life Change, Life Events, and Illness provides ready access to the historical record of the Holmes psychosocial laboratory. For archival purposes, editorial revisions have been undertaken only to correct errata, update references, and establish stylistic conformity. The first chapter, written specifically for this volume, places the work of the Holmes laboratory in historical context, probes the beginning of Holme's research hypothesis in studies of the physiology of emotions, and outlines the direction of his research program. The first group of readings review the development, testing, and validation of three innovative research instruments: The Social Readjustment Rating Scale, the Seriousness of Illness Rating Scale, and the Schedule of Recent Experience. Subsequent chapters reconstruct the initial applications of methodologies developed by Holmes and his colleagues, culminating in the formulation of a paradigm for the relationship of life change and illness susceptibility. The final papers illustrate the realms into which life change research expanded in the last decade of Holme's tenure at the laboratory.
