Gender differences in coaching leadership styles, and the relationship between won/loss percentage and the discrepancy scores between the self-report of leadership behavior by the coaches (n= 51) and the report for the coaches by the Director of Athletics (n= 51), were also examined. The Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS; Chelladurai & Saleh, 1980), which measures leadership styles across five dimensions, was used to determine and measure the self-reported leadership styles of coaches. Won/loss percentage and overall number of years as a head coach did not correlate to coaching leadership behaviors of male and female Division III college basketball coaches within the New England region. Book excerpt: This study was designed to determine whether there is a relationship between specific coaching leadership styles and athlete intrinsic motivation within Division III college baseball and softball players. In addition, the study also aimed to see what male and female student-athletes prefer in their coaching leadership behaviors. The study consisted of 21 (N=21) people, 19 student-athletes between 18-21 and two coaches. The Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS) and Sport Motivation Scale-II (SMS-II) were both utilized in order to determine the relationships. Results showed there is no significant relationship between leadership styles of coaches and athlete intrinsic motivation. In addition, results show that male student-athletes prefer training & instruction and female student-athletes prefer positive feedback in their coaches’ leadership behaviors. Future studies could look into the relationship of leadership styles and athlete intrinsic motivation in DI and DII athletes. A larger sample size of both coaches and many different team sports are two areas to be also further examined.

Drawing on over a decade spent as a college basketball coach and original research conducted on what leadership styles and behaviors help athletic coaches be successful, Lead Like a Pro provides coaches with the resources to transform their leadership practice and reach their full potential. Whether you are a volunteer coaching your child's team, a part-time high school coach who's also a teacher, or a full-time college or professional coach, this book will teach you new ways to enhance your leadership style and become a better coach for your athletes and team. All coaches should be constantly working on improving their leadership abilities, but not all coaches have the time or opportunity to attend leadership conferences, training sessions, or classes. Lead Like a Pro provides insight into different leadership techniques, and teaches coaches how to evaluate their current practices so they can develop a strong leadership style that fits their personal values and beliefs.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study is an exploration into intercollegiate Division I Men's basketball coaches' experiences in recruiting top student-athletes. Its contributions are manifold. The profession is dominated by practitioners who don't spend time researching and writing about their trade. Therefore, this study enhances an area where little has been done. Likewise, it bridges a gap between higher education academic administration and intercollegiate sports management. While previous studies have individual areas and outcomes in coaching leadership style, this study links together major themes, establishing it as a foundational contribution to the body of research. The results of this study have established my framework for successful recruitment of student-athletes and they are: creating a family dynamic among a dynamic group of individuals, harboring a relentless work ethic, establishing and working towards long-term oriented goals, looking at each potential candidate on a case by case basis, and that recruitment is the life blood of a program.

Book excerpt: In the shadows of the nation's most storied football program, Muffet McGraw has quietly built the Notre Dame women's basketball program into a national power. Arguably, women's basketball has been the university's most consistently successful varsity sport. Over the past 15 years, Irish women's basketball teams have made 12 post-season appearances including nine trips to the NCAA tournament. The team's rise to national prominence was underscored with a national championship in 2001. In short, the Notre Dame women's basketball prgram has been steadily built into a perennial national championship contender, and its architect for those 15 years has been Head Coach Muffet McGraw. McGraw has more than 300 victories at Notre Dame and a winning percentage of .729 with numerous awards to attest to McGraw's coaching success. Her honors in 2001 alone: Women's Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year, Naismith's Women's College Coach of the Year, Associated Press' Coach of the Year, Sports Illustrated for Women's Coach of the Year, and Big East Conference Coach of the Year. Personal accolades aside, Coach McGraw works hard to define effective methods for her players that will not only mean success on the court-but will also translate to personal fulfillment in life. Accordingly, in Courting Success McGraw outlines her ingredients for success-on and off the court-by sharing stories of hard lessons learned, the value of finely tuned work ethic and discipline, experiences that motivate and inspire, and "key plays" to put into daily living practice.

The purpose of this research was to examine the ways in which perceived coach leadership behaviors impact perceptions of coaching performance, individual athlete performance, team performance, and lifelong outcomes. In this study, two hundred seventy nine former student-athletes were asked to recall and report on the experiences they had as an athlete during high school along with specific lifelong outcomes (e.g., confidence, control etc.). Student judgment of their coaches' types of behavior, (e.g., Democratic vs. Autocratic) was compared with perceptions of their coach's performance, their individual performance, their team's performance and various lifelong outcomes. Results revealed that Training and Instruction, Social Support, and Positive Feedback were related to Coach Performance. Training and Instruction and Democratic Behaviors were related to Individual Athlete Performance. Training and Instruction and Positive Feedback were related to Team Performance. Social Support structures were related to Athlete Challenge. Training and Instruction was related to Athlete Confidence in Abilities and overall Lifelong Outcomes. Autocratic Behaviors were related to Athlete Control of Emotions. Training and Instruction was found to be related to every short-term performance component. Coaches seeking to impact performance of their teams can do so by utilizing these leadership behaviors. Many of these behaviors also have a long-term positive effect on the individual. Sport managers seeking to satisfy the goals of the organization may employ these leadership behaviors to select, train, and evaluate staff members to increase the overall effectiveness of the organization.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examined the perceptions of leadership style of Division III head basketball coaches and whether it had an effect on the perceived cohesion of the team. The relationships of leadership and cohesion with both success and satisfaction were also explored. In addition, this study also examined variables such as gender and player status (starters or non-starters) to determine if they had an effect on leadership and cohesion. A combination of convenience and random sampling was used to select potential participants for the study. After receiving the agreement to participate, packets containing a questionnaire for each athlete and head coach, as well as an explanation of the study and instructions, were mailed to the teams. Fourteen of the 21 teams returned their questionnaires, with 13 coach and 145 athlete questionnaires being usable. Athlete questionnaires consisted of 35 items from the Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS), examining four behaviors of leadership: Training and Instruction, Social Support, Democratic Behavior, and Positive Feedback. Also on the athlete questionnaire were 18 items from the Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ), which measure four dimensions of cohesion: Attraction to Group - Task, Attraction to Group - Social, Group Integration - Task, and Group Integration - Social. One item for measuring overall satisfaction was included, as well as nine demographic items. Coach questionnaires included only the 35 leadership items and seven demographic items. Results showed a significant relationship between leadership and cohesion, specifically between Training and Instruction behaviors and three of the four cohesion dimensions (Attraction to Group - Task, Group Integration - Task, Group Integration - Social). Other noteworthy findings included the significant relationships found between leadership and success, leadership and satisfaction, cohesion and success, and cohesion and satisfaction. Also, there was a significant difference in perceived cohesion between starters and non-starters; no significant difference in perceive leadership behavior was found between these groups. There was a significant difference between genders on leadership behaviors, with men rating each behavior higher. No significant difference was found between genders on cohesion. A discussion of the results includes practical implications for collegiate coaches and athletes and recommendations for future research.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the sport and exercise psychology literature, one topic that has been given increased attention is the leadership of athletes. Prior work has focused on the coach as a primary source of leadership for athletes and how that leadership can affect various student-athlete outcomes (Coleman, 1961; Gould, Chung Smith, & White, 2006; Smoll & Smith, 1989, 2006). These investigations have provided a wealth of information regarding coaches' influence over athletes in a number of different domains, such as motivation (Eccles,1996; Jowett, 2008; MacLean, 2012; Mageau & Vallerand, 2003), persistence (Calvo et al., 2010; Ryan & Deci, 2000), and performance (Gearity & Murray, 2011; Gillet, Vallerand, Amoura, & Baldes, 2010). Lacking the same depth of examination is the relationship between coaches and other educational leaders in an athlete's life that would provide much needed insight into their performance in an academic setting.More specifically, there is almost no research examining the relationships between coaches and teachers as they "co-lead" student-athletes. Given that teachers have been identified as one of the prime drivers of student achievement (Darling-Hammond, 1997) and coaches have been identified as one of the critical influences on student behavior (Smith, Smoll & Cummings, 2009) the lack of empirical evidence for the leadership dyad of teacher-coach on student-athlete outcomes is unfortunate. Seizing the opportunity to advance our understanding of the relationship dynamics and ecology of leaders in the inner-city high schools (Khalifa, 2012) will provide a more nuanced and comprehensive picture of the environment being established for Minority student-athletes.If educators (teachers and coaches) are similarly connected by the common goal of producing a successful student-athlete, a careful examination of their relationships is clearly in order. In other words, if we can begin to understand what the leaders think about each other-which is undoubtedly related to the way they treat each other-then we start to gain further insight into the relational ecology within which the minority student-athlete flourishes or flounders (Khalifa, Dunbar, & Douglas, 2013). Therefore, the overarching goal of my dissertation work is to address this gap in the literature by investigating the mutual perceptions of and behaviors between teachers and coaches as a precursor to understanding minority student-athlete outcomes in inner-city environments.
