Therefore, cyclists tend to prefer separated bicycle lanes over other lanes. It follows that cities are increasing the installation of separated bicycle lanes for bicycle utilization and bicycle safety. However, previous research has proven that separated bicycle lanes cause more crashes. Through empirical study, this paper examined the impact of both separated bicycle facilities and shared roads on bicycle crashes and which is safer or dangerous among methods of the separation. This study deals with bicycle accidents in Denver from 2013 to 2019. This research creates bicycle crash data by extracting only bicycles involved in the crash from the traffic accident dataset. And then, using the ArcGIS tool, the bicycle crash spatial is joined to each bicycle facility segment. Therefore, this study generated dataset of a bicycle crashes based on bike facilities. In the next step, a Poisson Rate Regression analysis was conducted in this study (run in SAS 9.4). The result is that a separated bike lane is estimated to increase the average number of crashes by 117% compared to a shared road. The second result showed that a cycle track facility is estimated to increase the average number of crashes 401% compared to a bike lane facility. In conclusion, a separated bicycle facility has more crashes than a shared road. Among separated bicycle facilities, a cycle track, where physically separated facilities were installed, was most likely to cause crashes.

Book excerpt: According to the Texas Department of Transportation Crash Record Information System database, there have been 26,148 crashes involving bicyclists (pedal cyclists) from 2010 to 2018 in Texas, resulting in 2,885 fatalities and suspected serious injuries and 22,937 non-incapacitating and possible injuries. Overall, bicycle crashes, as well as fatal and suspected serious injury crashes involving bicyclists, have been on the rise. Bicyclist safety concerns exist not only in cities and metropolitan areas but for the overall state highway network as well. In this project, the research team developed crash reduction factors for bikeway facilities implemented on Texas roadways to assess their safety and economic effectiveness. This research addressed the development of crash reduction factors for target crash types where sufficient bicycle facility information and crash information are available. To enable future cost-benefit assessments, the research included an estimate of the service life, installation, and maintenance costs of such facilities. The findings of this project indicate that installation of bikeway facilities can significantly improve safety for bicyclists. Implementing conventional bicycle lanes can help reduce total, fatal and injury, and property-damage-only crashes by 41-49 percent. Buffered bicycle lanes can improve safety by 20-65 percent, and separated bicycle lanes can improve safety by 41-53 percent. The economic benefits of these treatments were also found to significantly higher than the estimated cost of installing them.

Book excerpt: The absence of dedicated cycling infrastructure such as on-street bike lanes or physically separated bike routes forces cyclists to travel more frequently on urban arterials while sharing the road with motorized vehicles, and in turn, increasing the potential for vehicle-cyclist collisions. It is expected that the modal share of cycling will increase if cycling safety is improved; however, critical understanding is required about the relationship between vehicle-bicycle interactions, traffic conditions and their impact on cyclists' safety. Several US states and Canadian Provinces have introduced, or (as is the case in Ontario) are considering, legislation requiring that motorists provide a minimum of one meter of lateral clearance when overtaking and passing a cyclist. These laws are often referred to as "safe passing" laws. However, there is currently very little evidence quantifying the proportion of overtaking maneuvers that are "unsafe" (i.e. a lateral clearance less than 1m). Furthermore, there is little evidence quantifying the influence that various factors (e.g. geometry, traffic, etc.) have on lateral clearances. And finally, though current design guidelines for selecting recommended geometric treatments for cyclists (e.g. shared lane; on-street bike lane; physically separated bike paths; etc.) are sensitive to roadway type, traffic volume, and posted speed limit, there is little consistency between guidelines from different jurisdictions and these guidelines do not appear to be based on objective measures of risk. The research described in this thesis seeks to improve the current understanding of vehicle-cyclist interactions; specifically the lateral clearances between motorized vehicle and cyclists during overtaking maneuvers on urban arterial roadways and to be able to quantify the influence that geometric and traffic-flow parameters have on these lateral clearances. A portable data acquisition system, capable of measuring and recording location, bike speed, and the lateral distance to vehicles overtaking the cyclist, was designed and built. This system was used to collect data for more than five thousand over taking maneuvers on two-lane and four-lane urban roads with and without on-street bike lanes within the Kitchener-Waterloo area in southern Ontario. These data revealed that 12% of passing maneuvers on two-lane arterials without bike lane were unsafe. For two lane arterials with a bike lane, only 0.2% of passing maneuvers were unsafe. For four lane arterials, 5.9% of passing maneuvers were unsafe when no bike lane was present and only 0.5% were unsafe when a bike lane was present. These results suggest that a significant proportion of passing maneuvers on arterials without bike lanes are unsafe. Further analysis showed that for four lane roadways without bike lanes, drivers may attempt to provide increased lateral passing distance by changing lanes or encroaching partially in the adjacent lane, however their opportunity to do may be restricted when vehicles are in the adjacent lane. A model was developed to estimate the probability of unsafe passing on 4-lane roads without bike lanes for specific traffic conditions. The model shows that the proportion of passing maneuvers that are unsafe increases as traffic demand increases, the distance between consecutive traffic signals becomes shorter, and traffic signal cycle lengths become longer. The model is able to estimate both the proportion of unsafe passings as well as the expected number of unsafe passings per bike trip per hour for a given arterial roadway. We compare these quantitative estimates to conventional cycling infrastructure design guidelines, including the Ontario Traffic Manual Book 18.

Book excerpt: The main purpose of this research was to find out the characteristics of bicycle-related crashes and improve safety and comfort for bicyclists around signalized intersections in Louisville, KY. At first, the benefits of bicycling for accessibility, health, environment and traffic were discussed. Plans made by a number of states, regions and local governments for encouraging people to use bicycles as an alternative to motor-vehicles were introduced. Emphases were put on the introduction of the Louisville Metro Bike Master Plan, which aimed to increase bicycling activity throughout all parts of Louisville by making it a fun, comfortable and accessible mode of travel, and to simultaneously reduce the number of cyclists killed and injured in crashes with motor vehicles. Second, an elaborative literature interview was made to look for the reasons which caused crashes between bicyclists and drivers. The conclusion was that a large percentage of bicyclists-related crashes happened at intersections. The most important reason for bicyclists-related crashes was drivers' failing to yield when they were entering turning movements. Third, research for possible solutions which were used to improve safety for bicyclists was made. Studies which evaluated the effectiveness of those solutions were discussed. Fourth, in order to determine the characteristics of bicyclists-related crashes in Louisville, crash data of 10 years (from 2003 to 2012) was collected from the Kentucky Collision Analysis for the Public. Bicycle-related crashes in Louisville were most prevalent in the summer months, on weekdays and in the afternoon peak period in clear weather conditions. Turning-right was one of three highest possible pre-crash maneuvers in all bicycle-related crashes in Louisville The most important factor causing bicyclists-related crashes was motorists' inattentiveness, or failing to yield the right-of-way to bicyclists. Bicyclists' inattentiveness or failing to yield the right-of-way was also important for bicyclists-related crashes. Fifth, surveys were made four times to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly-developed countermeasure for bicyclists' safety. The conclusion was that this countermeasure for bicyclists' safety couldn't influence the distance from the curb where motor-vehicle crossed the stop bar. Most drivers preferred 4-6 feet away from the curb when they crossed the stop bar. This countermeasure for bicyclists' safety could attract about 40% of drivers to cross the boundary between the bicycle lane and the traffic lane and to enter the right-of-way of the bicycle lane. More than 50% of drivers needed 60-100 feet to finish the process of entering the right-of-way of the bicycle lane from the adjacent traffic lane. In short this newly-developed countermeasure for bicyclists' safety could greatly improve bicyclists' safety at intersections by changing drivers' right-turning movements. At last, some possible improvements for this new countermeasure were discussed to better this countermeasure in the future.
