Book excerpt: Does participation in competitive athletics influence the growth and development of children? In order to answer this question, researchers at the University of Western Australia collected data for five years. They compared the anthropometric, functional, physiological, and behavioral measurements of youngsters who were tennis players, swimmers, and members of a non-competitive control group. The unique feature of this study is that subjects were selected on the basis of athletic success at an early age - no previous study has done this. It was hoped that choosing youngsters who were successful in swimming or tennis might reveal any factor throughout growth which might indicate some reason for success in that activity. Because the study was longitudinal, it allowed the children to be traced through puberty. The University of Western Australia Growth and Development Study was carried out with funds supplied by the Sir Robert Menzies Foundation.

Book excerpt: Sport-specific resistance training relies on applying resistance to the same motions used in a sport's competition movements. Resisted swimming offers the opportunity to measure training variables used by coaches under an optimal force-velocity relationship. The purpose of this shtdy was to determine the relationship between kinetic and kinematic variables observed during resisted swimming and sprint performance. Three trials were conducted during weeks 1,6, and 12 (TI, T2, and T3) of the competitive season. During each trial week, a 45.72-m maximal effort freestyle sprint was used as a performance test. Two days later, 22.86-m resisted swim trials were performed against a predetermined resistance while recording and averaging time, strolce count, and stroke rate. A tethered swim test was used to determine peak force, average force, and the fatigue index of a maximal 30-sec maximum swim effort. A product-movement correlation determined the relationships of all variables to performance. The results show that peak and mean force were most strongly correlated to performance across all trials and genders. For coaches and athletes using resisted swimming, taking simple measurements of common training variables may provide some insight into the performance enhancing value of the training program being implemented.

Book excerpt: Founded on an analysis of scientific literature and backed by an abundance of references, this timely new book examines problems related to sports training, as well as the concept that training-induced changes are founded on adaptive protein synthesis. Discussions include: Alterations in the organism's adaptivity during exercise training Intracellular control of protein synthesis points on molecular mechanisms in exercise training Endocrine mechanisms with regard to acute adaptation during exercise, as well as amplification and post-translation control of the adaptive protein synthesis Practical benefits of the adaptation process in training

Book excerpt: Before 1970, scientific research in swimming was poor and anecdotal, and the improvements of performance were linked firstly to the swimmer's experience and, secondly, as a result of permanent research for speed. Before and after the Second World War, scientific studies were conducted by pioneers and marked the beginning of research in stroke mechanics and swimming physiology exercise. This book reviews research on the body of knowledge available for the improvement of sports coaching and training practice in swimming, which seems to be relevant, numerous, and diversified enough to help swimming coaches bridge the gap between theory and practice.
