Anxieties relating to body image can be crippling across both genders, their debilitating effects sometimes leading to mental health problems. This important book is the first of its kind to focus specifically on adolescents, providing a comprehensive overview of the biological, psychological and socio-cultural factors relating to the development of body image. It also provides a detailed review of the measures which can be taken to address body dissatisfaction. Discussing the role of culture, family, peers, schools, sport and media in stimulating a negative body image, the book also examines the different challenges faced by girls and boys as they grow. Eating disorders and body change strategies are also addressed, as well as the challenges faced by youngsters affected by conditions causing visible differences, such as hair loss in cancer patients. The book also presents original research, including the results from a large Australian study of the body image and associated health behaviours of adolescent boys, and the results of a study of current teaching practices relating to body image. Adolescence and Body Image will be ideal reading for students and researchers from a variety of fields, including developmental, health, and social psychology, sociology, and cultural and health studies. Professionals working with young people, whether in education, health promotion or any other allied discipline will also find this book an invaluable resource.

Although, 1-4% of adolescents have disordered eating behaviors, nearly 27% of girls aged 12-18 years report negative eating attitudes (2). Anorexia nervosa onset primarily occurs during the adolescent years and the death rate of this disorder is the highest rate of any psychiatric disorder (3). This study aims to observe and report eating attitudes and body image perception among adolescent females in an effort to determine at what ages eating attitudes and body image perceptions change during adolescence. There were a total of 24 participants. There were five 7th grade females, eight 9th grade females, and eleven 11th grade female students. Students were assessed by a questionnaire (see Appendix A). The statistical analysis of the data was computed using SPSS version 17 and Microsoft Excel. This study showed that the 7th grade girls who participated, had healthier body image and food behaviors than the 9th and 11th grade females who were part of this research. The 9th grade females who participated reported unhealthy ways they used to lose weight. The 11th grade females, like the 9th grade, also reported unhealthy weight reducing methods

Book excerpt: Background: Body image plays an important role in adolescence as this is the stage where dramatic changes occur in one’s different aspects of health. Objectives: This study aims to assess the body image evaluation, the satisfaction and dissatisfaction towards body image, of female adolescents through the use of Body Shape Questionnaire-34 (BSQ-34) and eating attitudes through Eating Attitudes-26 Test (EAT-26) self-report questionnaires. Moreover, the extent of the relationship between the two variables will be examined and utilized for the development of a mental health promotion program. Method: Descriptive Correlational Design was employed in examining the relationship between body image and eating attitudes among the two hundred eighty-seven (N=287) non-clinical female adolescents from private schools. Data from BSQ-34 and EAT-26 were analysed through Product Moment-correlation Coefficient or Pearson’s r, Arithmetic Mean, Frequency and Percentage. Results: Majority of the respondents evaluated their body image as Satisfied accounting to 65% (n=186). The results of eating attitudes of the respondents showed low forms of dieting (M=8.00), bulimic symptoms and food preoccupation resulted to low (M=2.83), and oral control resulted to low practice (M=3.25) among adolescents. Part C of EAT-26 revealed that majority of adolescents have not practice compensatory behaviours indicative of eating disorder symptoms and significant weight loss. Moreover, body image evaluation is strongly correlated with eating attitudes. Conclusions: Majority of adolescents practice low forms of attitudes and behaviours indicative of eating disorder risk, and were generally Satisfied with their body image. However, study found that Dissatisfaction is of considerable number as well with 35% of the respondents, fostering and sustaining positive body image is essential for this susceptible group. A proposed program for body image was adopted and modified for school use.

Book excerpt: The present study examines the relationship between the comments received by female adolescents concerning food, weight, and diet and the adolescents' own disordered eating attitudes and behaviors. The subjects in this study were 104 high school students, consisting of 32 9th-, 20 10th-, 32 11th-, and 20 12th-grade female students at a high school in a suburb of Fort Worth, Texas. The subjects consisted of approximately 75% European-American females and between 8-10% each African-American, Hispanic, and Asian/Pacific Islander females. An extensive literature search established the need for this study. The following areas were reviewed: importance of weight, appearance, food, and dieting among family members; mothers' body images and eating concerns; weight- or appearance-related teasing; and family and peer pressure to lose weight. This study examined the difference between members of the disordered eating group and the non-disordered eating group in the following areas: (1) number of people making comments to the subjects; and (2) frequency of comments received by the subjects. In addition, an exploration was done in regards to (3) the people endorsed as most influential to the subjects; and (4) the comments which were perceived by the subject as the most influential. Data was analyzed using SPSS 10.0 MANOVA, ANOVA, Chi-square and descriptive statistics. Between group tests showed that there were statistically significant differences between the disordered eating group and the non-disordered eating group in the following areas: (1) number of people making comments encouraging the subject to diet; (2) frequency of negative comments about weight received by the subject; and (3) frequency of comments received encouraging the subject to diet. It is hoped that these findings will be useful in eating disorder interventions among high school adolescents by documenting the negative effects of these comments on adolescents and allowing interventions to be targeted at those social influences most significant to high school girls.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although eating problems--ranging from body dissatisfaction and dieting to anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa--can begin and typically have their roots in childhood, theory and research in developmental psychopathology and developmental psychology have not received substantial attention in eating disorders research. This book provides crucial background material from both fields, and then makes direct applications to numerous aspects of the field of eating disorders including theory, research, treatment, and primary prevention. This book was born out of a transaction between frustration and optimism. The frustrations reflected the limitations of current knowledge about eating problems and disorders. Etiological "causes" which are sensitive and specific to eating disorders have been elusive. Although there is some understanding of risk factors, little is known about protective factors. This has made prevention, among other things, difficult. Furthermore, the mechanisms underlying the association between risk factors and disordered eating are poorly understood. For example, it is known that women are at greater risk than men are, but clinicians are hard- pressed to get beyond gender-based speculations and demonstrate why this is true. The optimism grows from familiarity with the field of developmental psychopathology. It seems evident that this approach has much to offer the field of eating disorders. This book is an early step in the integration of developmental psychopathology into theorizing, research, treatment, and prevention of eating disorders. It addresses four specific goals: * to introduce the principles and methodologies of developmental psychopathology, * to review the work of developmental psychologists in several major areas of behavior relevant to understanding the causes, treatment, and prevention of eating disorders, * to apply developmental psychopathology principles to the area of eating disorders, both in the form of theoretical models and in specific areas/issues raised by developmental psychopathology, and * to discuss the implications of developmental approaches for prevention programs and treatments.

Book excerpt: Teen-aged girls hate their bodies and diet obsessively, or so we hear. News stories and reports of survey research often claim that as many as three girls in five are on a diet at any given time, and they grimly suggest that many are “at risk” for eating disorders. But how much can we believe these frightening stories? What do teenagers mean when they say they are dieting? Anthropologist Mimi Nichter spent three years interviewing middle school and high school girls—lower-middle to middle class, white, black, and Latina—about their feelings concerning appearance, their eating habits, and dieting. In Fat Talk, she tells us what the girls told her, and explores the influence of peers, family, and the media on girls’ sense of self. Letting girls speak for themselves, she gives us the human side of survey statistics. Most of the white girls in her study disliked something about their bodies and knew all too well that they did not look like the envied, hated “perfect girl.” But they did not diet so much as talk about dieting. Nichter wryly argues—in fact some of the girls as much as tell her—that “fat talk” is a kind of social ritual among friends, a way of being, or creating solidarity. It allows the girls to show that they are concerned about their weight, but it lessens the urgency to do anything about it, other than diet from breakfast to lunch. Nichter concludes that if anything, girls are watching their weight and what they eat, as well as trying to get some exercise and eat “healthfully” in a way that sounds much less disturbing than stories about the epidemic of eating disorders among American girls. Black girls, Nichter learned, escape the weight obsession and the “fat talk” that is so pervasive among white girls. The African-American girls she talked with were much more satisfied with their bodies than were the white girls. For them, beauty was a matter of projecting attitude (“’tude”) and moving with confidence and style. Fat Talk takes the reader into the lives of girls as daughters, providing insights into how parents talk to their teenagers about their changing bodies. The black girls admired their mothers’ strength; the white girls described their mothers’ own “fat talk,” their fathers’ uncomfortable teasing, and the way they and their mothers sometimes dieted together to escape the family “curse”—flabby thighs, ample hips. Moving beyond negative stereotypes of mother–daughter relationships, Nichter sensitively examines the issues and struggles that mothers face in bringing up their daughters, particularly in relation to body image, and considers how they can help their daughters move beyond rigid and stereotyped images of ideal beauty.

Book excerpt: This book equips readers with the knowledge required to improve diagnosis and treatment and to implement integrated prevention programs in patients with eating and weight disorders. It does so by providing a comprehensive, up-to-date review of research findings and theoretical assumptions concerning the interface and interactions between body image and such disorders as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, other specified feeding and eating disorders, orthorexia nervosa, overweight, and obesity. After consideration of issues of definition and classification, the opening part of the book examines the concept of body image from a variety of viewpoints. A series of chapters are then devoted to the assessment of the multidimensional construct “body image”, to dysmorphophobia/body dysmorphic disorder, and to muscle dysmorphia. The third part discusses body image in people suffering from different eating disorders and/or overweight or obesity, and two final chapters focus on body image in the integrated prevention of eating disorders and obesity, and cultural differences regarding body image. The book will be of interest to all health professionals who work in the fields of psychiatry, clinical psychology, eating disorders, obesity, body image, adolescence, public health, and prevention.

This has led to some distressing statistics, with up to 10 percent of college-aged women in the United States suffering from an eating disorder. While individual women can focus on cultivating a healthy body image, it is important for young women to analyze how the media and others encourage unhealthy perceptions of what women's bodies are supposed to look like. A glossary, a "For More Information" section, and additional avenues of research are provided to guide readers to better understand the importance of a healthy female body image.
