Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of parental involvement, mental health, socioeconomic status, and gender on adolescents' plans after high school. Data was obtained from 3,971 adolescents', between the ages of 12 to 17, who participated in the 2003 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS). The independent variables utilized in this study were parental involvement, mental health, socioeconomic status, and gender. The dependent variable was mental health. The results of the study indicate that parental involvement, higher poverty levels, and being a female were all predictors of an adolescent's plan after high school. Future studies should investigate different factors that may also have on effect on adolescents, such as other mental health diagnosis or race. Furthermore, professionals in the helping profession and social workers should collaboratively work to develop programs that empower this population to create positive change in their lives and future career.

Book excerpt: An unprecedented change in family structure has had a great impact in Latino families during recent years. As marriage declines, single-parent families continue to increase over time. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of family type and socioeconomic status on psychological well-being and academic performance among Latino adolescents. Using the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS 2013-2014) Adolescent Survey, this study examined Latino adolescents (n=313, age range= 12-17). Data collected from this study was analyzed using descriptive statistics including frequency, mean, standard deviation, and inferential statistics, such as the independent sample T-Test, correlations and logistic regression. This study found that family type does have an impact on the psychological well-being of Latino youth. This study also found that there is a significant relationship between socioeconomic status and academic performance. However, Latino youth living in single-parent families did not report lower academic performance when compared to adolescents living in two-parent families. Overall, there needs to be greater emphasis in improving the well-being of Latino adolescents living in single parent families. This particular study suggest the importance of implementing effective intervention programs, policies and education for social workers, clinicians, and teachers working directly with adolescents raised in single parent households.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Research indicates that parental involvement in their children's education is beneficial to children, families, schools, and communities. Some research has suggested that Latinos may be less involved in their children's education, especially on school campuses, while other studies have found that Latinos are involved in their children's education in different, less traditional ways. This study investigated the relationships among mental health, family factors, and parental involvement in children's education among 43 Latina mothers of elementary school children. The findings suggested somewhat low involvement in their children's education but the most involvement occurred in home-related activities. These women showed little indication of stress and depression and these items were not significantly related to their involvement. Mothers' age and number of children were negatively related to some types of parental involvement while length of time in the United States was somewhat positively related to involvement in school-site activities. Implications for social work practice and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: The current study examined the relationship of parental support, behavioral control, and psychological control among Hispanic adolescents and depression. The sample included 839 Hispanic (primarily Mexican) 9th - 12th graders from west Texas area school districts who were given a self-reported survey to assess parental behaviors and adolescent depression. Using structural equation modeling (SEM), findings indicated that higher levels of maternal support were related to lower levels of depression in adolescent boys. The opposite was also found to be true for girls; higher levels of paternal support were related to lower levels of depression. Surprisingly, maternal support was not significantly related to depression in adolescent females, nor paternal support to depression in adolescent males. Parental behavioral control was found to be significant for both genders in the bivariate correlational analysis but was not found to be significantly related in the SEM multivariate analysis. Maternal psychological control was found to be significantly related to depression in boys and girls, wheras paternal psychological control was only found to be significantly related to depression in boys. Socioeconomic status and age were also asessed with the parenting variables to see how they affected depression in Hispanic adolescents. Age was not significantly related. However, socioeconomic status was found to be significant for girls but not for boys. Girls who came from higher SES backgrounds were less likely to be depressed. Results are discussed along with implications for therapists working with Hispanic populations.
