Teens throughout the US are more likely to experience a major depressive disorder when compared to adults (10.4% vs. 9.4%)(Kessler et al., 2010). Latinos may me at higher risk of mental health problems due to additional stressors such as low socioeconomic status (SES), limited access to services, and cultural stigma towards mental health services (Rossello, & Bernal, 1999). Latinos who have a high rate of acculturation are at greater risk of developing depressive symptoms. This may be due to highly acculturated families having less of an emphasis on familismo which is a cultural value focusing on respecting and helping others in the family (Padilla et al., 2011). American born Latino teens may have a higher rate of acculturation than their parents which has been shown to be related to increased family conflict and lower family support (Chun, & Akutsu, 2003). This dynamic puts Latino teens at an increased risk of developing depressive symptoms (Chun, & Akutsu, 2003; Santisteban, & Mitrani, 2003). This study examined data from 43 Latina teens in 11th and 12th grade to determine the relationship between level of acculturation and diagnosis of a major depressive episode, minor depression, and current symptoms of depression. There were no significant relationships found between acculturation, depressive symptoms, and current and past depression diagnoses. Over half of the sample (58.2%) reported a depression diagnosis at baseline and almost one third (27.9%) reported a depression diagnosis at follow-up indicating that a high number of Latina teens were experiencing depression at the clinical level. Thus, suggesting that participants in the sample would benefit from culturally competent services to address their mental health needs. The limited significant findings in this study may be due to the small sample size and the low acculturation level of the participants. Future research needs to be done with a large and more diverse sample in terms of acculturation levels in order for findings to be generalizable to other Latina teens.

Book excerpt: Research shows that socioeconomic status (SES) can impact adolescent use of alcohol and smoking. These relationships may be mediated by stress, psychosocial reserves, and negative emotions. I explored these relationships using the Reserve Capacity Model (RCM) as a theoretical foundation. The RCM suggests that individuals of low social status experience stress and must tap into tangible, intrapersonal, and interpersonal resources, often leaving these reserves depleted. Low reserves, in turn, predict the experience of negative emotions which can result in poor health outcomes. The RCM was later revised to integrate cultural constructs that can serve as stressors and resources (e.g., familism, which prioritizes the role of the family as a supportive network). The purpose of this study was to test the RCM using culturally relevant variables as mediators of relationships between SES, alcohol use, and smoking in a sample of Hispanic American adolescents. I predicted that low SES would positively predict stress (e.g., perceived discrimination and acculturative stress). Stress, then, would be negatively related to reserve capacity (i.e., familism, family cohesion, and fatalism), which, in turn, would negatively predict symptoms of depression. Then, depressive symptoms would be positively related to alcohol use and smoking. A sample of 1,386 Hispanic American adolescents completed self-report measures of these constructs across three school years. Counter to my hypotheses, baseline SES was unrelated to smoking and alcohol use at year three (controlling for baseline levels). Mediation hypotheses were partially supported. Results showed baseline SES predicted increased levels of perceived discrimination at year two, which, in turn, was significantly related to decreased familism and family cohesion also at year two. Family cohesion was significantly related to symptoms of depression at year two, which, in turn, predicted increased use of alcohol and smoking behaviors at year three. Findings suggest that low SES is associated with perceived discrimination, which negatively affects family functioning. In turn, challenges in the family seem to affect distress symptoms, which, in turn, predict alcohol use and smoking. Results imply that interventions designed to address adolescent perceptions of discrimination, or family cohesion, may positively impact rates of smoking and alcohol use among adolescents.

Despite this, there is limited empirical work that addresses the mechanisms by which acculturation conflict impacts psychological well-being in Latino youth. The goal of this dissertation was to examine the mechanisms that underlie the negative effects of acculturation conflict with parents, on an adolescent's depressive symptoms and self-esteem. In this current study, participants included 140 Latino adolescents (Mage = 12.88; SD = .70; 51% girls). The majority of youth were from Mexican-origin families (81%). Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), results indicated that parent-adolescent acculturation conflict predicted greater depressive symptoms, lower self-esteem, lower relationship satisfaction with mothers and fathers, and a lower ethnic private regard. Additionally, ethnic private regard served as a partial mediating mechanism linking acculturation conflict to self-esteem, such that, acculturation conflict predicted a lower ethnic private regard, which in turn, predicted lower self-esteem. This study focused on family level stressors and the link between interparental conflict and adolescent depressive symptoms in Latino families. The sample consisted of 400 girls and 290 boys, they were distributed into four groups based on gender and family structure. Written surveys were completed in their respective English classes measuring the aforementioned variables. Results indicated a significant relationship across all four groups between family stressors and interparental conflict, along with interparental conflict and depression. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study examines how cultural adaptation and family cohesion impact depressive symptoms in Hispanic immigrants that migrated to the U.S. by the age of 17. Using the National Latino and Asian American Study, a recursive regression was conducted on a hypothesized model demonstrating the relationship among the study variables: acculturation, acculturative stress, subjective social status, discrimination, ethnic social identity, dissonant acculturation, family cohesion and depressive symptoms. Psychosocial contextual variables are also included in the analysis and include gender, age, years in the U.S., education, income, and ethnicity. Results revealed two important themes in the data. The first is the importance of family in the adaptation process. As hypothesized, dissonant acculturation leads to the development of depressive symptoms. Additional findings concluded that family cohesion moderated the effect of dissonant acculturation. The second theme revealed in the data was the risk posed by acculturative stress in the adaptation process. Acculturative stress contributes directly to dissonant acculturation and to depressive symptoms.

Using linear regression models, I tested the impact of the acculturation gap on adolescent self-esteem, then on adolescent depression. Next, I used a mediation analysis to test the indirect impact of the acculturation gap on self-esteem and depression through intergenerational conflict. Further, I used a mediation analysis to test the effect of the acculturation gap on both self-esteem and depression through conflict and family cohesion simultaneously. Finally, I tested the same constructs in a moderated mediation analysis using the Griffen formula, which specifically measures relational ambivalence (the presence of both simultaneous positive and negative relationship characteristics). I then compared the results of all mediation analyses to determine which model accounted for the greatest variance in the two outcomes. Findings suggested that while the presence of intergenerational conflict significantly strengthened the impact of an intergenerational acculturation gap on depression, the addition of family cohesion-signaling ambivalence-was not more predictive of depression than conflict alone. On the other hand, results indicated that while conflict alone did not predict lower self-esteem in adolescents, the presence of ambivalence did have a significant negative impact on self-esteem."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: One of the largely undetected and untreated health conditions affecting the Latino population in the United States is depression. Although the onset of depression can be influenced by a variety of factors that differ among individuals, Latinos in the United States are subject to certain cultural-specific social and environmental stresses that may increase their risk. As Latinos become more acculturated into the American mainstream, they may be less likely to experience these stressors. Latina women have been found to have considerably higher rates of depression symptoms than their male counterparts; traditional values of the culture may be creating a sociocultural backdrop of gender inequality that could serve as a precursor to mental disorders. There is a gap in the research in relation to how depression rates in Latinas may be affected by the process of acculturation in the context of gender-based roles and power. This study is an exploration of how acculturation and relationship power affect the presence or absence of depression symptoms in Mexican immigrant women. A sample of 35 women from Benton County, Oregon, was interviewed using a questionnaire comprised of the revised Center for Epidemiologic Studies depression scale (CESD-R), the Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (SASH) and the Sexual Relationship Power Scale (SRPS). The purpose of the survey was to generate hypotheses for further research into factors that need to be taken into consideration when designing mental health programs for Latinos in the United States. Forty percent (40%) of the women in this study were classified as having depression symptoms according to their CESD-R scores, and a majority of the women were classified a having a low acculturation level. Also, the results indicate that most of the women in this study had medium to high levels of relationship power. The analysis did not yield a strong association between depression and acculturation scores or between depression and relationship power scores. There was a strong correlation found between acculturation and relationship power. It is hoped that this study will call attention to the mental health needs of Hispanic women and that the information gathered will aid in creating successful and culturally-relevant prevention and treatment services.
