At it they said, pointing to the meagre statement of the man's meagre life and achievements, and I looked at it. It isn't much of a. Life, is it they added. He has been a successful lawyer, I replied, looking for the silver lining which is said to be in every cloud. You might as well write a book about a successful haberdasher they answered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way of Unity and Peace The way of Unity and Peace is the subject of most anxious searching by every lover of our Country in the present crisis. The purpose of this paper is to remind men that there is such a way and to indicate the access to it. Those who have long been convinced of the necessity of discovering some means of relieving the congestion of Parliament and who have made some survey of. The ground, are convinced that they discern such a way in a general scheme of devolution. The writers of this paper claim no priority of discovery. Far from it; they recognise the claims of many other pioneers and explorers in this region, and, in particular, they call to mind with gratitude the approval of the principle of devolu tion or Home Rule all round which, qualified though it be, has been expressed by the Prime Minister himself, by Sir Edward Carson, Mr. Austen Chamberlain and others. What the writers desire to do is to recall men's minds from the pursuit of unsatisfactory expedients, and the treading of paths that admittedly lead nowhere, or else to a wrong destina tion, and to redirect them into what the writers believe to be in very truth the way of Unity and Peace. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Facts for British Platforms, Vol. 6: October, 1912 And their send-off to Sir Edward Carson officially at the Ulster Hall, and unofficially at the Docks, was a thrilling final message of hostility to the Bill. Not less wonderful was his early morning reception at Liver pool, and the great torchlight procession which followed the next day. Liverpool for Ulster was the motto, and Liver pool left it in no doubt. The Home Rule Bill enters upon Parliamentary consideration at Westminster this month. The Government bring it forward with the full and certain knowledge that whatever they may do or say, Ulster will not have it. Their sneers and jibes, the taunts and criticisms of their Nationalist allies break in vain against the rock of Ulster's determination. Whether the Government have a policy to break it down has not been made public. The Government wantonly aroused the animosities of past generations, who thought Home Rule was dead. Perhaps they resurrected the corpse without realising the hostilities which their action would arouse. To-day they have to face the situation, and the country, whose sympathy with Ulster is wide spread, will watch with interest the action of the Radical Party against men whose only crime is their loyalty and their resolve to maintain unimpaired that liberty and freedom which it is the right of all citizens of the Empire to possess.
