Book excerpt: This book presents some of the most important contributions made during the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) 22nd Annual Conference, titled ’The Future of the Region: Oil Price Challenges’. It seeks to outline strategies to ensure stability in Arab countries by identifying some of the key security issues, set against the context of oil price challenges. Chapter 1 examines the concept of stability, as well as the factors that have caused instability in the region, and suggests strategies to ensure peace and security, which is vital for the region’s advancement. Chapter 2 reviews the role of the GCC countries in maintaining regional stability, with a focus on the Gulf states’ emerging prominence as perhaps the only Arab power able to withstand the turmoil that has struck the region following the decline of the traditional Arab powers. Chapter 3 looks at shifting alliances in the region and suggests strategies for avoiding conflict within a new geo-political reality. Within this context, GCC countries should draw on their considerable capabilities to achieve and sustain security in the Arabian Gulf region, working to create a regional power base able to maintain military and economic balance. Chapter 4 sheds light on the policies and interests of the major powers in relation to the region. The significant decline in oil prices, consequences of the so-called Arab Spring, the crisis in Yemen, emergence of Da’esh and increased Iranian hostilities have had a major impact, raising the concerns of countries all over the world. Ultimately, partnership with major powers, such as the US, can help Gulf countries ensure the region’s stability and advancement. Chapter 5 considers how American views toward political Islam and religious extremism were shaped during Donald Trump’s presidential election campaign. It raises serious concerns over the campaign’s rhetoric, which can be viewed as having politicized Islamic extremism in the US, contributing to polarization and confusion over the issue, with implications for American relations with Gulf nations. Chapter 6 focuses on the economic policies of oil-producing states, which are in urgent need of major modification. In order to adapt to falling oil prices, two main mechanisms are identified; the use of sovereign wealth funds and a decrease in government spending. Finally, Chapter 7 continues the discussion of oil price challenges, reviewing the key issues in international oil markets, upon which the policies of oil-producing countries are based. Direct competition between oil producers in the region and American producers of shale oil is anticipated, especially during Trump’s tenure. The chapter’s conclusion is that for the foreseeable future, as GCC states diversify their economies, the oil sector will continue to play an essential role.

Book excerpt: More than 30 years after their momentous book "Projekt Mitteleuropa", which had been written before the fall of the Iron Curtain, Emil Brix and Erhard Busek revisit the political space between Germany, Russia and the Mediterranean. The volume explores the role of Central Europe in the 21st century, the importance of the European Union, the significance of a transforming Central Europe for European unity, and what happens when we marginalise Central Europe. The view of the authors is unequivocal: European integration will only succeed when the Central European countries from Poland to North Macedonia, from the Czech Republic to Romania and Moldova, will be seen as being at the heart of Europe. The European Union needs to build more common and fair ground between "old" and "new" member states. According to the authors, any further move towards a "Europe of two speeds" would lead to a break-up of the EU.

Book excerpt: People living in the Great Lakes region are already feeling the effects of a changing climate. Shifts in seasonal temperatures and precipitation patterns could have dramatic impacts on the economy, ecology, and quality of life. In this illuminating and thorough volume, leading scholars address the challenge of preparing for climate change in the region, where decision makers from various sectors—government, agriculture, recreation, and tourism—must increasingly be aware of the need to incorporate climate change into their short- and long-term planning. The chapters in this revealing book, written by some of the foremost climate change scholars in North America, outline the major trends in the climate of the Great Lakes region, how humans might cope with the uncertainty of climate change impacts, and examples of on-the-ground projects that have addressed these issues.

New technologies are increasing the supply of oil from old and new sources, while rising concerns over the environment are seeing the world gradually moving away from oil. This spells a significant challenge for oil-exporting countries, including those of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) who account for a fifth of the world’s oil production. The GCC countries have recognized the need to reduce their reliance on oil and are all implementing reforms to diversify their economies as well as fiscal and external revenues. Nevertheless, as global oil demand is expected to peak in the next two decades, the associated fiscal imperative could be both larger and more urgent than implied by the GCC countries’ existing plans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies values and attitudes in the Gulf region. In light of global power shifts, the threatening collapse of internal security in the West, and uncertainty about the current leadership vacuum in world society, this book explores a future leading role of the Gulf countries in such institutions as the G-20 and the OECD. Based on rigorous analysis of macro-level data and opinion surveys with relevance for the Gulf region, it analyzes the global macro-factors shaping the Gulf's future at a time of the global COVID-19 crisis and depression and rising global tensions. Starting with an empirical time series analysis of the long cycles of global politics and economics, it highlights the implications for the Gulf region. Offering a multivariate analysis of civil society values in the Gulf, the author analyzes value changes and attitudes on antisemitism, political Islam, internal security, democracy, and other issues of Arab politics. The partially optimistic conclusions of the study testify to the underestimated and incipient maturity of the Gulf’s civil society and strongly suggest that the Gulf's future is rather with the free societies of the West and not with a Neo-Ottoman Empire in whatever form. "Exceptional in scope and right up-to-the-minute in coverage" Brian M Pollins, Associate, Professor Emeritus, The Ohio State University. "An outstanding and topical book by an astute scholar of the MENA region" Professor Hussein Solomon, Academic Head of Department, Political Studies and Governance, University of the Free State, South Africa. "The most comprehensive and insightful study on the subject to date" Manfred B. What happens in the region (such as permafrost thaw or methane release) not only sweeps rapidly through local ecosystems but also has profound global implications. Bringing together a unique combination of authors who are local practitioners, indigenous scholars and international researchers, the book provides nuanced views of the social consequences of climate change and environmental risks across human and non-human realms.

Book excerpt: A cautionary but optimistic book about the world’s changing climate and the fate of humanity, from Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac—who led negotiations for the United Nations during the historic Paris Agreement of 2015. The authors outline two possible scenarios for our planet. In one, they describe what life on Earth will be like by 2050 if we fail to meet the Paris Agreement’s climate targets. In the other, they lay out what it will be like to live in a regenerative world that has net-zero emissions. They argue for confronting the climate crisis head-on, with determination and optimism. The Future We Choose presents our options and tells us what governments, corporations, and each of us can, and must, do to fend off disaster.
