Book Synopsis The Decline of Sterling by : Catherine R. Schenk
Download or read book The Decline of Sterling written by Catherine R. Schenk and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-27 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demise of sterling as an international currency was widely predicted after 1945, but the process took thirty years to complete. Why was this demise so prolonged? Traditional explanations emphasize British efforts to prolong sterling's role because it increased the capacity to borrow, enhanced prestige, or supported London as a centre for international finance. This book challenges this view by arguing that sterling's international role was prolonged by the weakness of the international monetary system and by collective global interest in its continuation. Using the archives of Britain's partners in Europe, the USA and the Commonwealth, Catherine Schenk shows how the UK was able to convince other governments that sterling's international role was critical for the stability of the international economy and thereby attract considerable support to manage its retreat. This revised view has important implications for current debates over the future of the US dollar as an international currency.

Book excerpt: The devaluation of 1967 and the float of 1972 have become two of the key cornerstones in the analysis of sterling under the Bretton Woods system. Sterling's fortunes between 1968 and 1972 have not been so well documented. This article uncovers new evidence about the pound for this period, including the British governments contingency plans for blocking the sterling balances as a means to negate the weakness of sterling following the 1967 devaluation, the discussions with the United States on the reform of the international monetary system, and the preparations made for floating the pound.

Book excerpt: Sterling Ruby (American/Dutch, b. 1972, Bitburg, Germany) is known for his restless invention and prolific output across mediums. From handworked ceramics and sublime abstract paintings, to soft sculptures and work with textiles and quilts, Ruby is one of the leading voices of his generation. This catalogue presents twenty years of the artist's iconic, multidisciplinary works. Accompanying Ruby's first U.S. museum survey, this book takes a thematic approach to the artist's output, focusing on his critical invocation of imagery related to American identity. Beginning with his earliest two-dimensional works on paper, this volume demonstrates Ruby's distinctive approach to psychological, cultural, and topical concerns, and his continuous engagement with themes such as prison reform, labor conditions, and popular culture.
