Download or read book The Red Thread written by Jacob A. Zumoff and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of 15,000 wool workers who went on strike for more than a year, defying police violence and hunger. The strikers were mainly immigrants and half were women. The Passaic textile strike, the first time that the Communist Party led a mass workers’ struggle in the United States, captured the nation’s imagination and came to symbolize the struggle of workers throughout the country when the labor movement as a whole was in decline during the conservative, pro-business 1920s. Although the strike was defeated, many of the methods and tactics of the Passaic strike presaged the struggles for industrial unions a decade later in the Great Depression.

Book excerpt: A Love Renewed is a collection of stories and wonderfully crafted letters that transports you seamlessly across three continents, as you experience the heat of passion, the depths of despair, the pain of loss, and the maturing of the hearts and minds of two lovers-Harry and Camille. Harry is a writer whose love for Camille seems to be overshadowed by his desire for literary success. Four stories written by Harry weave a picture of what's in his heart and mind. He takes you to Europe and the rich, blue southwest beaches of Spain, as he acquaints you with a culture rich in tradition and national identity. He then takes you to Texas, as two people, both searching for someone to touch their hearts, shed the truths of their pasts and find each other. Yet another tale of two families joined together takes you through the jungles of Venezuela in a race to stop a bio-terrorist from spreading his venom in the United States. Harry's strategy for recovering Camille's love is an intricate plan that is played out in colorful, romantic scenes that will carry you away and warm your heart.
Book Synopsis Ritual in Its Own Right by : Don Handelman
Download or read book Ritual in Its Own Right written by Don Handelman and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, canonic studies of ritual have discussed and explained ritual organization, action, and transformation primarily as representations of broader cultural and social orders. In the present, as in the past, less attention is given to the power of ritual to organize and effect transformation through its own dynamics. Breaking with convention, the contributors to this volume were asked to discuss ritual first and foremost in relation to itself, in its own right, and only then in relation to its socio-cultural context. The results attest to the variable capacities of rites to effect transformation through themselves, and to the study of phenomena in their own right as a fertile approach to comprehending ritual dynamics.

Everything you could ask for was there: a great cozy library, an enormous museum, and an Assembly Hall that used to receive famous artists. The school had lots of competitions and other fun events, and everything was fine - until a notebook disappeared from a student's backpack. Many thought it a joke and gave it no heed. Could a single notebook bring down the Classroom 4A and take away the Institute's past glory? Any student - good or bad - would laugh if you said it. It was simply impossible. Yet a day after, two boys see themselves hurled into a quest they didn't expect and have to race against time. Embark on a journey full of brilliant thefts, long-forgotten school myths, rivalries, and friendships. Henry Fole and the Mystery of the Red Folder mixes the classic detective stories with an adventure full of heroism and bravery. It's a tale that will stay inside the readers' minds and hearts for a long time.

Book excerpt: For readers of Elizabeth Strout and Barbara Kingsolver, a beautifully observed portrait of marriage, divorce, and reconciliation as an estranged couple embark on a road trip from small-town Ontario to B.C. to finally lay to rest the mystery that pulled them apart. Kathleen and Yannick have not spoken for nineteen years, not since what happened with their daughter. Now, there’s unexpected news from the other side of the country, and the call for a road trip they can only make together. As they rattle over two thousand miles in a pick-up, an alluring history reveals itself: of begrudging love, headstrong children and hopeless searching, and of a unique bond that never really went away. As they drive, bicker, and lose their way, an unexpected future for this once broken couple begins to emerge. Moon Road captures the wonderment and grief of seeing children grow up; of recovering from long-buried pain, and rediscovering those most familiar to us; of learning to live and love in a whole new way.
