Book excerpt: The recruitment and retention of high school band directors in urban settings are unique challenges in the 21st century. Those who advocate for arts education present evidence that participation in fine arts programs enhances student learning. Significant correlations exist between involvement in the arts and standardized test scores, high school graduation rates, and overall school attendance. However, funding and support are essential concerns for arts programs today. Funding and support through necessary resources affect the recruitment and retention of band directors in urban settings. Little research exists to describe these views. Exploring band directors' lived experiences working in urban schools supplies insight into recruitment and retention. Data collected through interviews with high school band directors from urban school settings were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. Conclusions fostered through analysis may help improve the recruitment and retention of teachers. Describing the experiences of band directors teaching in urban settings may raise support among education leaders and policymakers. Future research stemming from this study may help guide advocacy. As a result, study findings may help educators improve overall funding for fine arts programs, gain access to musical instruments needed for instruction and performance, and generate added resources to enhance effective teaching and learning in music and other art branches.

Book excerpt: This project explored research and pedagogical literature related to the recruitment and retention of students involved in school music ensembles at the secondary level. Additionally, literature regarding advocacy for school instrumental programs was reviewed. Although music courses serve an important purpose in a well-rounded education and should be made easily available to all students, there are cases in which policymakers or administrators do not prioritize the need for music education. To facilitate strong student participation in school music programs, the literature points to the benefits of music educators implementing a year round recruitment, retention, and advocacy plan. As part of this capstone project, a twelve-month plan for recruitment, retention, and advocacy was created, grounded in the research and pedagogical literature in music education. The plan outlines strategies such as frequent contact with new recruits and their parents, positive student-teacher relationships with current students, and providing culturally relevant performances that meet the community's expectations. All of the findings are applicable to strategically improving the quality and quantity of the band program in the Valley Park, Missouri school district.

Book excerpt: “Since singing is so good a thing,I wish all men would learne to sing” (William Byrd, 1588) Over the centuries, there has been reluctance among boys and men to become involved in some forms of singing. Perspectives on Males and Singing tackles this conundrum head-on as the first academic volume to bring together leading thinkers and practitioners who share their insights on the involvement of males in singing. The authors share research that analyzes the axiomatic male disinclination to sing, and give strategies designed to engage males more successfully in performing vocal music emphasizing the many positive effects it can have on their lives. Inspired by a meeting at the Australian symposium ‘Boys and Voices’, which focused on the engagement of boys in singing, the volume includes contributions from leading authorities in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States and Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this multiple case study research was to examine recruitment and retention strategies used by successful urban school band directors. Participants were four urban school band directors and two urban school administrators. The directors were purposely selected based upon having successful and well-known band programs in schools that exhibited characteristics common to urban schools, including (a) a large percentage of low-SES students, (b) low, mean standardized test scores for students, (c) limited parental involvement in the band program, and (d) constrained budgets to support the band program. A survey and interviews were used to collect data on the teachers, their programs, and their administrators. Interview questions were developed based upon a review of literature and research questions regarding strategies used to recruit and retain students within urban school band programs. Using a semi-structured format, directors were interviewed to learn about their background in music, education, and current teaching situation. Two administrators were also interviewed regarding their perceptions of the recruitment and retention of students in the band programs in their school. Each band director participant described similar approaches to recruitment and retention, utilizing techniques such as demonstration concerts, informational handouts, testing of students on instruments, and holding a recruitment night for parents. They also noted the importance of administrative and parental support.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to formulate a plan for recruiting students into a beginning level band program and retaining instrumental students throughout the middle school grade levels. Instrumental music educators need to have a recruitment plan for enticing students into the band program as well as a plan to retain those students. Through the development of a thorough plan that details specific approaches and methods, music educators are able to recruit students into the instrumental program as well as retain students through the higher levels of said program. Plans based on experiences from existing programs and research may allow educators to identify students who are potentially interested in the instrumental programs, providing strategies to target all groups of students to increase participation. Teachers will benefit, and consequently better develop an ideal instrumental program, through the implementation and improvement of their recruitment and retention plan. The developed plan identified specific activities for each month and included such things as working with teachers and administrators in the elementary school, planned interactions between middle school director and elementary school students, community involvement and performance opportunities. With the implementation of a well-developed plan, music educators develop and maintain a successful comprehensive program for students to grow, develop, and foster musicianship.

Book excerpt: Despite the numerous research studies promoting popular music education, many school districts need to implement an ensemble that teaches popular music. On average, only 24 percent of high school students participate in an ensemble throughout their high school careers, and music educators are trying to address this through modern bands. This qualitative, postpositivist, existential-phenomenological study identifies how the implication of modern bands can increase and retain music enrollment in secondary schools and analyzes the effects on other traditional instrumental and vocal ensemble enrollments. This study examined secondary music directors’ perceptions of the impact of modern bands on traditional ensembles. To ascertain how modern bands can help increase enrollment and learn the effect on traditional ensembles, music educators with modern band programs from across the United States provided their perspectives through a qualitative survey. Additionally, music teachers were encouraged to discuss their views on how modern band affects traditional ensembles. The results of this study show that popular music may help increase enrollment in music programs without adversely impacting traditional ensembles. This research study will help music educators and district administrators understand the leverage modern band must increase music ensemble enrollment and its relationship with traditional ensembles. In addition, this research study could encourage more school districts to adopt popular music education to reach students that may have otherwise eluded the music program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The undergraduate years are a special time of life for many students. They are a time for study, yes, but also a time for making independent decisions over what to do beyond formal education. This book is based on a nine-year study of collegiate a cappella - a socio-musical practice that has exploded on college campuses since the 1990s. A defining feature of collegiate a cappella is that it is a student-run leisure activity undertaken by undergraduate students at institutions both large and small, prestigious and lower-status. With rare exceptions, participants are not music majors yet many participants interviewed had previous musical experience both in and out of school settings. Motivations for staying musically involved varied considerably - from those who felt they could not imagine life without a musical outlet to those who joined on a whim. Collegiate a cappella is about much more than singing cover songs. It sustains multiple forms of inequality through its audition practices and its performative enactment of gender and heteronormativity. This book sheds light on how undergraduates conceptualize vocation and avocation within the context of formal education, holding implications for educators at all levels.

Book excerpt: Opportunities and Challenges in Teacher Recruitment and Retention serves as a comprehensive resource for understanding teachers’ careers across the professional lifespan. Grounded in the notion that teachers’ voices are essential for understanding teachers’ lives, this edited volume contains chapters that privilege the voices of teachers above all. Book sections look closely at the particular issues that arise when recruiting an effective, committed, and diverse workforce, as well as the challenges that arise once teachers are immersed in the classroom setting. Promising directions are also included for particularly high-need areas such as early childhood teachers, Black male teachers, STEM teachers, and urban teachers. The book concludes with a call for self-care in teachers’ lives. Chapter contributions come from a variety of contexts across the United States and around the world. However, regardless of context or methodology, these chapters point to the importance of valuing and respecting teachers’ lives and work. Moreover, they demonstrate that teacher recruitment and retention is a complex and multifaceted issue that cannot be addressed through simplistic policy changes. Rather, attending to and appreciating the web of influences on teachers lives and careers is the only way to support their work and the impact they have on our next generation of students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many studies have been conducted by researchers focused on recruitment and retention in secondary music ensembles. The need to understand what motivates students to continue to persist with their music participation is predicated on the idea that secondary music ensembles may not be meeting the needs of today’s learners (Albert, 2006). By not meeting the needs of today’s learners, secondary music ensembles face the possibility of diminishing or disappearing entirely. This paper includes a detailed description of existing literature which addresses this very problem, starting with early childhood musical experiences to existing barriers in music education. It also includes information from practitioner articles and a synthesis of the described research.
