Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Recovery of Nitrate From Chilean Caliche: Containing a Vocabulary of Terms an Account of the Shanks System, With a Criticism of Its Fundamental Features, and a Description of a New Progress Since the date of the first manufacture of nitrate from the caliche found in the (then) Peruvian pampa, during the early years of the 19th century, the developments in the industry have been almost entirely in connection with the application of new and improved processes for the purpose of making profitable the treatment of material of decreasing nitrate content. The average ley, or nitrate percentage, of the caliche treated during the first fifty years probably averaged at least 75 per cent. In the most primitive method of beneficiation the rich caliche was boiled with water or mother liquor in large copper pans by the direct application of heat; and the nitrate was then crystallised from the resulting strong solution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a sequel (or better: a prequel) to Immanuel Velikovsky's main work, the best-selling Worlds in Collision, in which he gave a detailed reconstruction of two global natural catastrophes based on information handed down by our ancestors. He mentioned there that, as part of his intensive research, he found numerous indications of even more catastrophes that took place earlier in the history of mankind. In the present book, the material collected by Velikovksy about this topic is presented to the public for the first time. His findings show just how turbulent the history of Earth and our planetary system was during the time of mankind and how little we actually know of all that today.
Book Synopsis A History of Chile, 1808-2002 by : Simon Collier

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Chile chronicles the nation's political, social, and economic evolution from its independence until the early years of the Lagos regime. Employing primary and secondary materials, it explores the growth of Chile's agricultural economy, during which the large landed estates appeared; the nineteenth-century wheat and mining booms; the rise of the nitrate mines; their replacement by copper mining; and the diversification of the nation's economic base. This volume also traces Chile's political development from oligarchy to democracy, culminating in the election of Salvador Allende, his overthrow by a military dictatorship, and the return of popularly elected governments. Additionally, the volume examines Chile's social and intellectual history: the process of urbanization, the spread of education and public health, the diminution of poverty, the creation of a rich intellectual and literary tradition, the experiences of middle and lower classes and the development of Chile's unique culture.
Download or read book Antifascisms written by David Ward and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an in-depth analysis of three of the most crucial years in twentieth-century Italian history, the years 1943-46. After more than two decades of a Fascist regime and a disastrous war experience during which Italy changed sides, these years saw the laying of the political and cultural foundations for what has since become known as Italy's First Republic. Drawing on texts from the literature, film, journalism, and political debate of the period, Antifascisms offers a thorough survey of the personalities and positions that informed the decisions taken in this crucial phase of modern Italian history.
