Book excerpt: The Recovery Equation, or the Motivational Enhancement, Choice Awareness, and Use Prevention Therapy (ME/CA/UP), is a secular application of the Change Equation Model to the problem of substance abuse. The Recovery Equation is specifically designed to augment the treatment of substance abuse in the context of an intensive inpatient or intensive outpatient (daily partial hospitalization) drug and alcohol treatment program. In its conceptual orientation and its technical eclecticism, the Change Equation Model, and its substance use specific application, the Recovery Equation Method, draw support from the following schools of clinical thought, theoretical and research domains (in alphabetical order): Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (Hayes et al., 1999)Cognitive Behavioral Relapse Prevention Therapy (Marlatt & Gordon, 1985)Cognitive Dissonance Theory (Festinger, 1957)Crystallization of Discontent (Baumeister, 1996)Exposure/Response Prevention Therapy for addictive behavior (Drummond et al., 1995)Feedback-loop Theory in application to Self-Regulation (described in Baumeister, 1994)The Philosophy of Gurdjieff (Speeth, 1989; Ouspensky, 1949)Inoculation Hypothesis (McGuire, 1964) and Stress Inoculation Training (Meichenbaum, 1993)Logotherapy (Frankl, 1969) Motivational Interviewing Therapy (Miller & Rollnick, 1991; Saunders et al., 1991)Relational Frame Theory (Hayes, 1987)Self-Change Research (Klingemann et al, 2001)Self-Efficacy Theory (Bandura, 1982)

This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivation is key to substance use behavior change. Counselors can support clients' movement toward positive changes in their substance use by identifying and enhancing motivation that already exists. Motivational approaches are based on the principles of person-centered counseling. Counselors' use of empathy, not authority and power, is key to enhancing clients' motivation to change. Clients are experts in their own recovery from SUDs. Counselors should engage them in collaborative partnerships. Ambivalence about change is normal. Resistance to change is an expression of ambivalence about change, not a client trait or characteristic. Confrontational approaches increase client resistance and discord in the counseling relationship. Motivational approaches explore ambivalence in a nonjudgmental and compassionate way.

Book excerpt: Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Book excerpt: The success of Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) as an effective out-patient treatment plan for addiction has brought this valuable manual back in print. MET is an adaptation of the counseling approach known as Motivational Interviewing (MI) that was developed by clinical psychologists Professor William R. Miller, PhD and Professor Stephen Rollnick, PhD. Known for its unique method of facilitating and engaging intrinsic motivation within the client to change behavior, MI was pursued by Project MATCH in 1989 to compare its efficacy for treating patients of alcohol and substance abuse. Behavioral therapists and social workers who care for clients with addiction problems will find the MET techniques extremely helpful, particularly if step-programs have proven unsuccessful. The Motivational Enhancement Therapy Manual guides therapists in developing the five components of MET that make it ideal for personalized treatment: Empathy Goal Making Avoidance of Arguments Rolling with Resistance Supporting Self-Efficacy In this four-session, 90-day recovery plan, the success lies in the cultivation of a client's inner willingness to overcome previous ambivalence toward treatment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking volume provides readers with both an overview of harm reduction therapy and a series of ten case studies, treated by different therapists, that vividly illustrate this treatment approach with a wide variety of clients. Harm reduction is a framework for helping drug and alcohol users who cannot or will not stop completely—the majority of users—reduce the harmful consequences of use. Harm reduction accepts that abstinence may be the best outcome for many but relaxes the emphasis on abstinence as the only acceptable goal and criterion of success. Instead, smaller incremental changes in the direction of reduced harmfulness of drug use are accepted. This book will show how these simple changes in emphasis and expectation have dramatic implications for improving the effectiveness of psychotherapy in many ways. From the Foreword by Alan Marlatt, Ph.D.: “This ground-breaking volume provides readers with both an overview of harm reduction therapy and a series of ten case studies, treated by different therapists, that vividly illustrate this treatment approach with a wide variety of clients. In his introduction, Andrew Tatarsky describes harm reduction as a new paradigm for treating drug and alcohol problems. Some would say that harm reduction embraces a paradigm shift in addiction treatment, as it has moved the field beyond the traditional abstinence-only focus typically associated with the disease model and the ideology of the twelve-step approach. Others may conclude that the move toward harm reduction represents an integration of what Dr. Tatarsky describes as the “basic principles of good clinical practice” into the treatment of addictive behaviors. “Changing addiction behavior is often a complex and complicated process for both client and therapist. What seems to work best is the development of a strong therapeutic alliance, the right fit between the client and treatment provider. The role of the harm reduction therapist is closer to that of a guide, someone who can provide support an

Recovery Through Respect is intended for Addiction groups, but can also benefit those with personality and behavioral disorders. The "Recovery Through R.E.S.P.E.C.T." program of treatment begins with the elements of recovery represented by the letter "R." Right relationships, Recognition of problems, Road to Recovery, Responsibilities in life, and many more are all discussed in this portion of treatment. The Letter "E" stands for elements of recovery such as: Engaging conversation about the purpose of life, Encountering situations that lead to relapse, Entertainment and how this can trigger cravings are all a part of group interaction during the program. Many times in recovery relapse happens when a person is bored or has down time, this is why the elements of the Letter "S" are examined during the 16 week group. Issues involving daily schedules, sharing of experiences, and involvement in support groups are vital to the recovery process. Next are conversations about the recovery elements beginning with the letter "P." It is during this segment that people and places that the client has had in the past or in the present are re-evaluated to help the client understand boundaries and healthy situations. Other recovery elements beginning with "E" are: Efforts to stay healthy, Effectiveness in treatment, Encouragement of others to remain in recovery, and Enemies of recovery all produce a discussions regarding the necessity of following through with assignments and practicing the tools of recovery. The "C" in Respect, discusses character issues and challenges of healing of the mind and body as well as other costs of a person's addiction. During final sessions the "T" of Respect reviews the change or Transformation of a person's life through a discussion about what has transpired in the client's life during the 16 week program. In order to get the most out of a therapy session, it is recommended to discuss one element from the "R," one element from the "E," one element from the "S," one element from the "P," one element from the "E," one element from the "C," and one element from the "T" listed in the index.
