Book excerpt: The Rebirth of Cold Fusion, by Steven B. Krivit and Nadine Winocur Psy.D., explains the science and significance of this new field of energy research. Written for the general public, the book provides an excellent foundation for anyone wishing to learn more about this complex science story and controversy. Reputable scientists from around the world consider cold fusion to be a fascinating new field of scientific study. In 2004, the U.S. Department of Energy cold fusion review indicated that cold fusion continues to show promise as a potential new energy source, free of nuclear waste and harmful emissions. "The Rebirth of Cold Fusion fills an evident and urgent need to inform the scientific and lay public about this topic, which has been so massively misunderstood," Dr. Martin Fleischmann, co-discoverer of cold fusion, said. "Krivit and Winocur have done sterling work on this." The book explains the past, present, and possible future ramifications of cold fusion research and technology. "The Rebirth of Cold Fusion gives much insight into how the 'due processes of science' came up with a decision that now appears to have been precisely the wrong one," commented Dr. Brian Josephson, a Nobel prize winner in physics who has analyzed cold fusion research. The book contrasts the 50-year hot fusion research program, paid for with tens of billions of taxpayer dollars, to other competitive, promising and much less-expensive alternatives, which have been put aside as unworthy of investigation.?The future is almost unlimited," world-renowned futurist Sir Arthur C. Clarke wrote in the book's foreword. "It can be the end of the fossil fuel age and the end, incidentally, of many of our worries about global pollution and global warming. This book strengthens my hope."

Book excerpt: Professor Huizenga, Co-Chairman of the U.S. Department of Energy Cold Fusion Panel that investigated the claims of Pons and Fleischmann--the scientists behind the ill-fated "cold fusion" experiments at the University of Utah in 1989-- here documents the entire fascinating saga and provides a careful and thorough study of the controversy that followed. The factual, hardhitting account concludes with a discussion of the lessons to be learned from the episode and the implications for the proper conduct of science. In this new paperback edition, the author has taken the opportunity to bring the story of cold fusion up-to-date. This definitive account, will interest all scientists and historians of science, as well as general readers interested in the issues of experimental science and ethical conduct.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Close, a leading physicist and talented popular science writer, reveals the true story of the cold fusion controversy--a story ignored until now in spite of the glare of publicity surrounding Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons. On March 23, 1989, these two Utah scientists held an astonishing press conference, maintaining that they had succeeded, working in secret, in harnessing atomic fusion. What was the basis for their claims to have achieved cold fusion in a test tube in a basement laboratory, while other scientists--using magnets as big as houses and temperatures hotter than those in the center of the sun--were failing to produce as much power as they were using? Why did Fleischmann and Pons proclaim their "discovery" at a news conference, when first announcements of scientific results are almost always made within the scientific community? Why did the full-blown media event inspired by their initial report cause governments to reorient their research programs in hopes of cornering the "new technology"? And why did some scientists recklessly abandon their traditional painstaking methods in haste to be first to prove or discredit the experiment? Acquainted at first hand with investigations of cold fusion on two continents, Close is uniquely qualified to probe the motivations behind Fleischmann's and Pons's startling assertions and to explore the intellectual and political turmoil that surrounded the cold fusion debate. Book excerpt: This book is the final chapter in a study that the author has undertaken and revealed in his prior books, A Tree's String Theory and Storybook Cold Fusion Affaire. He believes this book will tie together the theories expounded in the first two books and bring clarity to the "myth" of cold fusion. The first book introduces "The Horror"; the second continues with "Love," and this book brings a final scientific explanation of cold fusion and how it can translate into the reality of the modern world. All three books explain the importance of a natural and modified world, which can reveal the reality of cold fusion. As the world is changing, theory becomes the exposition of such change. These books urge us to complement our energy and resources with cold fusion to better ourselves and the universe.

Book excerpt: Undead Science examines the story of cold fusion, one of the most publicized scientific controversies of the late twentieth century. In 1989 two Utah-based “discoverers” claimed to have developed an electrochemical process that produced more energy than was required to initiate the process. Finding no other explanation, the researchers described their findings as some kind of nuclear reaction. If they were correct, an important new energy source would have been found. Objections surfaced quickly, and in the year that followed, hundreds of scientists worldwide attempted to reproduce these results. Most, though not all, failed, and the controversy became increasingly antagonistic. By 1990, general scientific opinion favored the skeptics and experimental work went into a steep decline. Nevertheless, many scientists continue to do research in what Bart Simon calls this “undead science.” Simon argues that in spite of widespread skepticism in the scientific community, there has been a continued effort to make sense of the controversial phenomenon. Researchers in well-respected laboratories continue to produce new and rigorous work. In this manner, cold fusion research continues to exist long after the controversy has subsided, even though the existence of cold fusion is circumscribed by the widespread belief that the phenomenon is not real. The survival of cold fusion signals the need for a more complex understanding of the social dynamics of scientific knowledge making, the boundaries between experts, intermediaries, and the lay public, and the conceptualization of failure in the history of science and technology.
