Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Real Shelley; New Views of the Poet's Life in two volumes is a biography of Percy Bysshe Shelley written by John Cordy Jeaffreson. Jeaffreson wrote the book in order to offer a new look on the life of famous poet, since many of Shelley enthusiasts and apologists made a significant effort to create the image of this fanciful and romantic Shelley. He undertook a challenge to refute poet's idolaters and their praises, and to portray the "Real Shelley," exposed and without romantic illusions and false impressions.

Book Synopsis Coleridge and Shelley by : Sally West
Download or read book Coleridge and Shelley written by Sally West and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sally West's timely study is the first book-length exploration of Coleridge's influence on Shelley's poetic development. Beginning with a discussion of Shelley's views on Coleridge as a man and as a poet, West argues that there is a direct correlation between Shelley's desire for political and social transformation and the way in which he appropriates the language, imagery, and forms of Coleridge, often transforming their original meaning through subtle readjustments of context and emphasis. While she situates her work in relation to recent concepts of literary influence, West is focused less on the psychology of the poets than on the poetry itself. She explores how elements such as the development of imagery and the choice of poetic form, often learnt from earlier poets, are intimately related to poetic purpose. Thus on one level, her book explores how the second-generation Romantic poets reacted to the beliefs and ideals of the first, while on another it addresses the larger question of how poets become poets, by returning the work of one writer to the literary context from which it developed. Her book is essential reading for specialists in the Romantic period and for scholars interested in theories of poetic influence.

Download or read book Mary Shelley written by Angela Wright and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Shelley reappraises the significance of Frankenstein alongside other works by Shelley which could be considered to revise the significance and fluctuating meanings of ‘Gothic’ during the Romantic period. It offers scholarly, fresh readings of the 1818 and 1831 editions of Frankenstein, as well as chapters upon the fiction that Shelley composed in between both editions, and during the same decade as its second edition. In its broader examination of Mary Shelley’s work, this study is the first of its kind within the field of Gothic studies. Alongside sustained explorations of Frankenstein, Matilda, Valperga and The Last Man, the volume Mary Shelley reappraises some of the shorter essays and tales that the author composed for contemporary magazines. Angela Wright argues that the time is now right for a re-examination of the extent to which Shelley participated in and redirected the Gothic tradition.

Book Synopsis The Shelley-Byron Circle and the Idea of Europe by : P. Stock
Download or read book The Shelley-Byron Circle and the Idea of Europe written by P. Stock and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-04-12 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates how Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, and their circle understood the idea of Europe. What geographical, cultural, and ideological concepts did they associate with the term? What does this tell us about politics and identity in early nineteenth-century Britain? In addressing these questions, Paul Stock challenges prevailing nationalist interpretations of Romanticism, but without falling prey to imprecise alternative notions of cosmopolitanism or "world citizenship." Instead, his book accounts for both the transnational and the local in Romantic writing, reassessing the period in terms of more complex, multi-layered identity politics.
