Book excerpt: Novelist, intrepid traveller, barrister-at-law, newspaper editor and uninhibited gossip, John Lang lived for a number of years in pre- and post-Mutiny British India, and his writings constitute some of the most vivid records of the time. Lang describes his meeting with the Ranee of Jhansi-soon to become the focal point of the rebellion-as well as his counsel to her; he also chronicles the wondrous and tragic life of 'Black and Blue', a boy of mixed British and Indian parentage, and his claims to a peerage in England. And, narrating a march in the Upper Provinces, Lang provides an eyewitness account of eight thousand monkeys, gathered in Deobund for a clan meeting. Written with a historian's sense of detail, a raconteur's delight in the unexpected, and a keen sense of the absurd, John Lang's travel diary is a riveting read.

Book excerpt: This book is in pursuit of Alice, whose name rhymes with gallus. That, however, is another memory, another book waiting to germinate. John Lang (1816-1864), inebriated on John Exshaw, 'a ruling spirit of those days', most of his adult life, was a dogged underdog from Sydney, who spared no effort to hurt the John Company (East India Company). He settled in India at the age of 26, and was a prolific writer, journalist and lawyer. His novels were too feminist for Victorian comfort, while his white male protagonists were often described with the phrase-'India he loved, England he despised.' As a journalist he was irreverent towards the army and legal systems; modern journalists could take a lesson or two from Mr Lang. As a lawyer, John Lang learnt Persian and Urdu fast so that he could argue cases in the lower courts. He fought a number of important cases for Indians against the John Company, and won some-the establishment found a way to send him to jail. The Rani of Jhansi was so impressed, she invited him to be her lawyer. There was a party going on at Lang's house when he died. He said that a party should not be stopped just on account of his ill health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stiff upper lip, steely eyes and a cold heart is often how the English imperialist is pictured in popular imagination. Drawing from memoirs, commentaries and family letters, Elizabeth Hamilton brings forth an alternative portrayal of her ancestors, Sir Robert Hamilton and Sir William Barton. Their careers in India are set against the momentous events of their times to present a different side of the colonialists of a quiet people, dedicated to the tradition of upholding the law and avoiding conflict. Volume I, The Proud Empire, traces the life of Sir Robert Hamilton, from the beginning of his career under the watchful eye of his father, up until his retirement. Occupying multiple roles such as the Resident of Indore and Agent to the Governor General in the Central Provinces, he is seen interacting with various prominent Indian figures such as the Rani of Jhansi, Tantya Tope and Nana Sahib. The picture of the arrogant imperialist fades away to be replaced by that of someone keen to make a difference to the society he was working in, who encourages good governance, mends ties in the midst of escalating tensions and must recover cities occupied by insurgents, all the while shadowed by the burden of great personal losses. Volume II, The Straight Race, tracks Sir William Barton’s career in the early twentieth century. Starting in the Punjab and the North-West Frontier, he later served as Resident in the well-administered states of Mysore and Hyderabad, where he stood up to the Nizam, doing his best to set the administration on a less corrupt footing. Retirement did not deter Sir William’s close interest in Indian affairs; he returned twice on tour as an advisor to electrical companies and travelled with a Ministry of Supply mission during the Second World War. With three books and many articles for newspapers and journals on the subject, India remained an integral part of his life.
