Book Synopsis The Church of Baseball by : Ron Shelton
Download or read book The Church of Baseball written by Ron Shelton and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the award-winning screenwriter and director of cult classic Bull Durham, the extremely entertaining behind-the-scenes story of the making of the film, and an insightful primer on the art and business of moviemaking. “This book tells you how to make a movie—the whole nine innings of it—out of nothing but sheer will.” —Tony Gilroy, writer/director of Michael Clayton and The Bourne Legacy “The only church that truly feeds the soul, day in, day out, is the church of baseball.” —Annie in Bull Durham Bull Durham, the breakthrough 1988 film about a minor league baseball team, is widely revered as the best sports movie of all time. But back in 1987, Ron Shelton was a first-time director and no one was willing to finance a movie about baseball—especially a story set in the minors. The jury was still out on Kevin Costner’s leading-man potential, while Susan Sarandon was already a has-been. There were doubts. But something miraculous happened, and The Church of Baseball attempts to capture why. From organizing a baseball camp for the actors and rewriting key scenes while on set, to dealing with a short production schedule and overcoming the challenge of filming the sport, Shelton brings to life the making of this beloved American movie. Shelton explains the rarely revealed ins and outs of moviemaking, from a film’s inception and financing, screenwriting, casting, the nuts and bolts of directing, the postproduction process, and even through its release. But this is also a book about baseball and its singular romance in the world of sports. Shelton spent six years in the minor leagues before making this film, and his experiences resonate throughout this book. Full of wry humor and insight, The Church of Baseball tells the remarkable story behind an iconic film.

Book Synopsis It's Raining Uber by : Jasmine Jean-Pierre
Download or read book It's Raining Uber written by Jasmine Jean-Pierre and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rain or shine, they will always be best friends, and since one loves the rain and the other loves the sun, the friends agree for one day that they will try to enjoy what the other loves to do most. Cloudy Rain loves to do cartwheels, backflips and splash puddles in the rain. But not Rain Forrest, he hates the rain. He doesn't want to play in it, nor go outside when it pours down from the highest clouds in the sky, and he certainly doesn't want his soggy friend close by when he's been soaked by the rain. Yet, on any sunny day, it's Rain Forrest whose brightness shines. He doesn't want a shady old oak tree, a big beach umbrella, or creamy creams. He simply wants to bake in the sun until he glows like Saturn because according to him "the sun is the mother who tans me." Cloudy Rain fulfills his part of the agreement. While the best friends have many exciting and life changing adventures that will test just how strong their friendship really is, Rain Forrest hasn't stepped up to fulfill his end of the agreement. When the best friends are separated by one of their adventures, and there's a possibility they will never reunite, Rain Forrest steps up, and he takes the biggest of leaps to search for his best friend.

Download or read book The Fluid Environment of the Earth written by Guido Visconti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is conceived at two levels. An introductory one intended for undergraduate and/or environmental studies students and the other (in the appendix) for advanced students (graduate). The book is different from others on the same subject which are either too descriptive or too much specialized. Beside there are large sections on biogeochemistry not usually found in other textbooks. Whenever possible an approach based on entropy considerations is introduced. The book includes a quite classical introduction to the thermodynamics of ocean and atmosphere, then the circulation of the ocean and atmosphere, the connection climate-chemistry with main emphasis on the carbon dioxide problem. The chemistry is also considered in connection with the polluted atmosphere and ocean and particulate in the atmosphere . A chapter is dedicated to the biogeochemical cycles which are solved both with the integration of a system of equations or matrix algebra. An original chapter is dedicated to sea-atmosphere interactions which includes the monsoons meteorology, hurricanes and the ENSO phenomena. Finally a concise description of the fluid environments in the Solar System is given.

Book Synopsis A Sideways Look at Clouds by : Maria Mudd Ruth
Download or read book A Sideways Look at Clouds written by Maria Mudd Ruth and published by Mountaineers Books. This book was released on 2017-08-18 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • Written by a critically-acclaimed natural-history author • Shares author’s fun journey to understanding clouds • Written for the curious—but non-science—minded Author Maria Mudd Ruth fell in love with clouds the same way she stumbles into most passions: madly and unexpectedly. A Sideways Look at Clouds is the story of her quite accidental infatuation with and education about the clouds above. When she moved to the soggy Northwest a decade ago, Maria assumed that locals would know everything there was to know about clouds, in the same way they talk about salmon, tides, and the Seahawks. Yet in her first two years of living in Olympia, Washington, she never heard anyone talk about clouds—only the rain. Puzzled by this lack of cloud savvy, she decided to create a 10-question online survey and sent it to everyone she knew. Her sample size of 67 people included men and women, new friends in Olympia, family on the East Coast, outdoorsy and indoorsy types, professional scientists, and liberal arts majors like herself. The results showed that while people knew a little bit about clouds, most were like her—they had a hard time identifying clouds or remembering their names. As adults, they had lost their curiosity and sense of wonder about clouds and were, essentially, not in the habit of looking up. A Sideways Look at Clouds acknowledges the challenges of understanding clouds and so uses a very steep and bumpy learning curve—the author’s—as its plot line. The book is structured around the ten words used in most definitions of a cloud: “a visible mass of water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere above the earth.” A captivating story teller, Maria blends science, wonder, and humor to take the scenic route through the clouds and encourages readers to chart their own rambling, idiosyncratic course.
