Now she is back in the little frontier town of her childhood, living in her brother Luke Turner's house, a stranger to the happiness he has with his wife, Sarah. For while Sarah's love redeemed Luke from a wild, lawless past, Julia still burns with shame at being born a Turner, a pretty rag doll of a girl from a tarpaper shack ... a girl not good enough for James Banks, the handsome son of the town doctor. Yet in this tiny Texas town Julia cannot avoid James for long. When their eyes met, desire washed over her just as it had before. She knows some things never change, but she cannot forget her dream of a love that comes once in a lifetime ... or her secret promise that this time she won’t let him go.

Book excerpt: First published in 1963, James Baldwin's A Fire Next Time stabbed at the heart of America's so-called ldquo;Negro problemrdquo;. As remarkable for its masterful prose as it is for its uncompromising account of black experience in the United States, it is considered to this day one of the most articulate and influential expressions of 1960s race relations. The book consists of two essays, ldquo;My Dungeon Shook mdash; Letter to my Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of Emancipation,rdquo; and ldquo;Down At The Cross mdash; Letter from a Region of My Mind.rdquo; It weaves thematic threads of love, faith, and family into a candid assault on the hypocrisy of the so-say ldquo;land of the freerdquo;, insisting on the inequality implicit to American society. ldquo;You were born where you were born and faced the future that you facedrdquo;, Baldwin writes to his nephew, ldquo;because you were black and for no other reason.rdquo; His profound sense of injustice is matched by a robust belief in ldquo;monumental dignityrdquo;, in patience, empathy, and the possibility of transforming America into ldquo;what America must become.rdquo;

Book excerpt: Power has a God-given role in human relationships and institutions, but it can lead to abuse when used in unhealthy ways. Speaking into current #MeToo and #ChurchToo conversations, this book shows that the body of Christ desperately needs to understand the forms power takes, how it is abused, and how to respond to abuses of power. Although many Christians want to prevent abuse in their churches and organizations, they lack a deep and clear-eyed understanding of how power actually works. Internationally recognized psychologist Diane Langberg offers a clinical and theological framework for understanding how power operates, the effects of the abuse of power, and how power can be redeemed and restored to its proper God-given place in relationships and institutions. This book not only helps Christian leaders identify and resist abusive systems but also shows how they can use power to protect the vulnerable in their midst.

Book excerpt: Tolerance and co-existence are both great! In fact, they are necessary. If we are to live together in peace without hating each other, or physically harming each other over differences in race, culture, sexual orientation, political views, and religious beliefs, we must have tolerance. However, we must also recognize that every belief can't be equally valid. If two beliefs directly contradict each other, both of them cannot be true, no matter how "tolerant" we become. This means it is false to say that every religion is true, or that every religion leads to God. When people make such claims they show that they have not taken the time to study the world's religions, because a brief reading of the sacred texts of only a handful of religions quickly reveals contradictions on the most fundamental levels. Religious Contradictions Reincarnation (Hinduism and Buddhism) contradicts the belief that this is your only life before eternity (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam). Salvation from sin (Christianity) contradicts the belief that there is no sin to be saved from but simply pain that can be escaped through enlightenment (Buddhism). Jesus Christ is the incarnate, Son of God (Christianity), contradicts the teaching that he is just a prophet (Islam) or that he was a false prophet (Judaism). In light of these contradictions alone, all religions can't be true. They could all be false, but they can't all be true. Are any of them true? This is the most important question anyone can ask. Recognize religious contradictions. Embrace them. Test them. Seek the truth. www.contradictmovement.org

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Promise of the Rainbow Through My Tears is a collection of romantic, lyrical and metaphysical poems, together with songs and ballads. The themes are a roving vagabond's stroll amongst images, scenes and telling experiences. Some reflect profound memories-pleasant and unpleasant-seen through the eyes of childhood and adolescence. Some are filled with a young man's romance and ripe with rhyme and imagery. While others are introspective and searching an old man's coming to grips with his mortality. Above all, these poems tell the story of life's journey; from the cradle, along the dream of life, to the grave and beyond. The poems themselves are not divided into any particular order or theme; they roam much like the authors experiences and gather their own rhythm as their theme dictates. Although the poetic style of rhyme is not popular in modern poetry,much can be found throughout this collection, which accents the author's nonconventional approach to his work. What is evident though, is the varied themes reflected in this volume, which suggests that any reader will find some poem or line that would draw on his or her personal experience.
