Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. Jameson's Raid: Its Causes and Consequences The Transvaal, or South African Republic, its people and government, are at present occupying and perplexing the minds of all thoughtful Britons. The territory is about equal in size to the United Kingdom, and extends on the south from the River Vaal, which separates it from the Orange Free State, to the Limpopo or Crocodile River, which separates the Transvaal on the north from the Chartered territory of The British South Africa Company. On the west it is bounded by Bochu analand, and on the east by the Portuguese territory, which intervenes between the Transvaal and the coast of the Indian Ocean. The name Transvaal (literally, beyond the Vaal) was applied to this country by the Dutch Africanders, who. Dr. Leander Jameson, whose ill-starred raid into the Transvaal is regarded as one of the most daring and unfortunate military expeditions of modern times, is an enterprising Scotchman, fortytwo years of age. He was born in Edinburgh in 1853, his father being a Writer to the Signet, and his mother a daughter of Major-General John Pringle. He received his early education in his native town; but on the family settling in London, as they did a quarter of a century ago, young Jameson was entered as a medical student of University College, and pursued his studies in medicine in that institution. Of medium height and somewhat slight physique, he was yet accounted a tolerable athlete. He was diligent in the pursuit of his studies and soon distinguished himself as a student. In College. he won silver medals and a scholarship in surgery, and when he graduated at London University in 1875, he gained the gold medal for medical jurisprudence. He was ap pointed house surgeon of University College Hospital, and his old colleagues prophesied for him a bright future. Unfortunately his health broke down, and to recruit his strength he made a sea voyage across the Atlantic and took a tour in America. Shortly after his return to London, in 1878, he set out for South Africa, and entered into medical partnership with Mr. Prince, a doctor in Kimberley. The practice prospered much, and this was largely due to the fact that, in addition to professional skill and a capacity for incessant labour, the young doctor was possessed of a suavity of manner and engaging social gifts. Soon Mr. Jameson was regarded as the leading physician of the district, and among his early patients was Mr. Cecil Ehodes, whom he restored to health by...

Book excerpt: "The famous poem by Rudyard Kipling is based on the life of Jameson, and the suffering he endured as a result of the doomed raid that he and his Rhodesian and Bechuanaland policemen carried out against Paul Kruger's Transvaal Republic in 1896. In this engaging biography ... Ash recounts the life of this colonial statesman known as 'Dr Jim' or simply 'The Doctor'. He was an enigmatic man: when he died The Times estimated that his astonishing personal sway over his followers was equalled only by that of Parnell, the Irish patriot. During the fervour of the South African diamond rush Jameson established a small medical practice in Kimberley in 1878; it was here that he met and forged a lifelong friendship with Cecil John Rhodes. Jameson's thirst for adventure, coupled with Rhodes's dream of expanding the British Empire from the Cape to Cairo, led - under Royal Charter to the British South Africa Company - to the occupation of Mashonaland in 1890, with Jameson having laid the groundwork in his political dealings with Lobengula, king of the Matabele. And so began Jameson's rollercoaster adventure: from Administrator of Mashonaland, to the 'invasion' of Portuguese East Africa (Mozambique), the Matabele War and the infamous 'Jameson Raid' and his subsequent trial and incarceration in London. Despite the raid, Jameson had a successful political life. He died on 26 November 1917 in London. His body was laid in a vault at Kensal Green cemetery where it remained until the end of the First World War. Ian Colvin wrote in 1923 that Jameson's body was then 'carried to Rhodesia and on the 22nd of May, 1920, laid in a grave cut in the granite on the top of the mountain which Rhodes had called 'The View of the World' (in the Matopos Hills near Bulawayo), close beside the grave of his friend.'"--Back cover.

Book excerpt: The author of this book joined the British South Africa Company immediately after it was formed in 1889, and from 1891 to 1893 was private secretary to Dr Jameson, in Rhodesia. He was, thus, brought into close contact with some of those who were to play a prominent part in the subject of this book. In his introduction he makes the point that any attempt to judge the behaviour of those who took part in the Jameson Raid must be unprofitable without an understanding of their psychology, what motivated them. The principal actors in this drama, he says, were not ordinary men; not a few of them were personal friends. I Dr. Leander Starr Jameson (1853-1917), a medical man (MRCS, MD), came to South Africa from Britain in 1878 after a breakdown in health. He took up practice in Kimberley where he first came into contact with Cecil Rhodes. He joined the BSA Company and when Rhodes opened up Mashonaland, (today s Zimbabwe) Jameson gave up his practice and joined the pioneering expedition to the new territory. In 1891 he became administrator of Rhodesia, and on 31st December 1895, with a force of 600 men, led a raid into the Transvaal Boer republic from Mafeking in support of a planned rising in Johannesburg, by anti-Boer Uitlanders - mainly of English extraction, organised or at least connived at by Rhodes. The rising fialed to occur and without it the raid was doomed from the outset. Only a week later Jameson s force was compelled to surrender at Doornkop. Jameson and his officers were handed over to the British by the Boer President Kruger. Jameson got 15 months jail of which he served a year before being released on grounds of ill-health; he returned to Rhodesia. Despoite this inauspicious start, his political career was just beginning. Dr Jim eventually became prime minister of Cape Colony in Rhodes footsteps and was a leading figure in the creation of the Union Of South Africa in 1909. He was made a KCMG and a baronet in 1911. An ill wind certinly blew him some good!

Book excerpt: South Africa and the Transvaal War in eight volumes is a historical account of The Second Boer War fought between the British Empire and two independent Boer states, the South African Republic (Republic of Transvaal) and the Orange Free State, over the Empire's influence in South Africa. Initial Boer attacks were successful, and although British reinforcements later reversed these, the war continued for years with Boer guerrilla warfare, until harsh British counter-measures including a scorched earth policy brought the Boers to terms. The work is divided in eight volumes, first of which covering the period from the First Boer War to the beginning of the Second Boer War. Following six volumes deal with the Second Boer War and the last volume is dedicated to the future of South Africa after the war ended. Book excerpt: The Jameson Raid was a pivotal moment in the history of South Africa, linking events from the Anglo-Boer War to the declaration of the Union of South Africa in 1910. For more than a century, the failed revolution has been interpreted through the lens of British imperialism, with responsibility laid at the feet of Cecil Rhodes. Yet, the raid was less a serious attempt to overthrow a Boer government than a wild adventure with transnational roots in American filibustering. In The Cowboy Capitalist, renowned South African historian Charles van Onselen challenges a historiography of over 120 years, locating the raid in American rather than British history and forcing us to rethink the histories of at least three nations. Through a close look at the little-remembered figure of John Hays Hammond, a confidant of both Rhodes and Jameson, he discovers the American Old West on the South African Highveld. This radical reinterpretation challenges the commonly held belief that the Jameson Raid was quintessentially British and, in doing so, drives splinters into our understanding of events as far forward as South Africa’s critical 1948 general election, with which the foundations of Grand Apartheid were laid.
