Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the 'Black Horror' campaign as an important chapter in the popularisation of racialised discourse in European history. Originating in early 1920s Germany, this international racist campaign was promoted through modern media, targeting French occupation troops from colonial Africa on German soil and using stereotypical images of 'racially primitive', sexually depraved black soldiers threatening and raping 'white women' in 1920s Germany to generate widespread public concern about their presence. The campaign became an international phenomenon in Post-WWI Europe, and had followers throughout Europe, the US and Australia. Wigger examines the campaign's combination of race, gender, nation and class as categories of social inclusion and exclusion, which led to the formation of a racist conglomerate of interlinked discriminations. Her book offers readers a rare insight into a widely forgotten chapter of popular racism in Europe, and sets out the benefits of a historically reflexive study of racialised discourse and its intersectionality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Rhine is Germany's main commercial highway, containing many of its major ports. In war, it is vital for the Germans to push an enemy to outflank the entire river barrier preparatory to taking the industrial target. During World War II, there were three great Rhine campaigns, the last which was the Allies' final push for the victory and the Germans' last hope of resistance. The soldiers who went forward to the attack of counterattack--or who dropped from the skies--were of many nationalities: Dutch, French, German, British, Canadian, and American. As the Germans lost ground, the ineveitable order to blow the bridges behind them came. Hitler ordered that any officer who failed to blow a bridge in time was to be shot. But he complicated the difficult decision by adding that anyone who blew a Rhine bridge too early was also to be shot." -- Taken from dust jacket.

Book excerpt: Travel across the battlefields of WWII with this beautiful book combining historical images, full-color aerial photography, and informative text. In June 1944, Allied forces invaded Nazi-occupied France, beginning a sweep of fierce battles that would eventually liberate Western Europe. With aerial photography, historic images, maps, and other illustrations, Race to the Rhine brings readers to the fateful grounds where men sacrificed their lives for freedom. The destruction of German forces in Normandy’s Falaise pocket was a decisive victory: by September, British troops were in Ghent and Liege; Canadian forces liberated Ostend, and in northeast France, Patton’s Third Army was moving rapidly to the German border. The liberation of the Low Countries would not prove as straightforward, however. Operation Market Garden—Montgomery’s brave thrust toward the Rhine at Arnhem—ended in failure with over six thousand paratroopers captured. In late October, belated operations began to clear the Scheldt Estuary and open the port of Antwerp to the Allies. Belgium was almost free of the Nazi yoke, and the Netherlands looked likely to be cleared before Christmas. Then, on December 16, came a major German counter-offensive in the Ardennes. It turned out to be Hitler’s last try: the American defenders held, and in the spring, the Rhine was finally gained. Perfect for the armchair traveler or for those who want a historic guide as they visit significant sites, Race to the Rhine supplies essential information on the places that best represent the battles today.

Book Synopsis The Race for the Rhine Bridges by : Alexander McKee

Book excerpt: The River Rhine and its deita in Holland, protecting Germany's vital industrial area of the Ruhr, helped dictate the course of events in three land campaigns of the Second World War. Some towns and bridges were so important that they were fought for two or even three times in the space of five years. There were three battles for Amhem, not one, involving the armies of four different nations. In covering for the first time all three campaigns, the author is able to put the most famous of these battles in perspective, as a text-book example of how not to handle airborne forces. The final campaign in the spring of 1945 saw the crossing of the historic German Rhine on a long front from Strasbourg to Emmerich by American, French, British and Canadian troops. The book is based on copious documentation, much of it contemporary and unpublished, and includes many vivid narratives by 'key' witnesses. We share the feelings of German paratroopers, the 'It's suicide' reaction of the Guards tank crews, and the stunning effect on the American soldiers as Remagen Bridge collapses behind them.
