Book Synopsis Sartre and Marxist Existentialism by : Thomas R. Flynn
Download or read book Sartre and Marxist Existentialism written by Thomas R. Flynn and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1986-10-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important book, Thomas R. Flynn reinterprets and evaluates Sartre's social and political philosophy, arguing that the existential ethics of Sartre's early phase is consistent with the Marxist-inspired views of his later writings. Displaying his mastery of Sartre's entire corpus, Flynn reconstructs Sartre's social ontology with its sensitive balance of the existentialist's respect for moral responsibility and the Marxist's sense of social causation. Flynn focuses on the issue of collective responsibility as a particularly apt test-case for assessing any proposed union of existentialist and Marxist perspectives. The study begins with an examination of the uses of "responsibility" in Being and Nothingness and in several postwar essays. Flynn then concentrates on the Critique of Dialectical Reason, offering a thorough analysis of the remarkable social theory Sartre constructs there. A masterful contribution to Sartre scholarship, Sartre and Marxist Existentialism will be of great interest to social and political philosophers involved in the debate over collective responsibility.
Book Synopsis A Critique of Jean-Paul Sartre's Ontology by : M.A. Natanson
Download or read book A Critique of Jean-Paul Sartre's Ontology written by M.A. Natanson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be healed?" -Jeremiah "Existentialism" today refers to faddism, decadentism, morbidity, the "philosophy of the graveyard"; to words like fear, dread, anxiety, anguish, suffering, aloneness, death; to novelists such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Dostoievski, Camus, Kafka; to philosophers like Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Marcel, Jaspers, and Sartre-and because it refers to, and is concerned with, all of these ideas and persons, existentialism has lost any clearer meaning it may have originally possessed. Because it has so many definitions, it can no longer be defined. As Sartre writes: "Most people who use the word existentialism would be em barrased if they had to explain it, since, now that the word is all the rage, even the work of a musician or painter is being called existentialist. A gossip columnist . . . signs himself The Exis tentialist, so that by this time the word has been so stretched and has taken on so broad a meaning, that it no longer means anything at all. " 2 This state of definitional confusion is not an accidental or negligible matter. An attempt will be made in this introduction to account for the confustion and to show why any definition of existentialism in volves us in a tangle. First, however, it is necessary to state in a tenta tive and very general manner what points of view are here intended when reference is made to existentialism.

This book was released on 1989-11-22 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Displaying a masterful grasp of the texts, the author shows how otherness forces itself upon the existentialist Sartre, gradually constraining him to modify his understanding of consciousness as omnipotent. The issue is Sartre's discovery of the social and its conceptual assimilation into his individualistic, consciousness-oriented philosophy." -- Thomas R. Flynn "This very successful and accessible scholarly book... is simultaneously a succinct and clear overview of Sartre's philosophical works.... and a fresh consideration of Sartre's body of work." -- Choice "Busch's admirably clear and compact discussion is essential reading for Sartre scholars, since it powerfully addresses many issues dividing them... " -- Ethics "... a useful overview of the evolution of Sartre's thought... " -- Review of Politics "... a thought provoking reassessment of Sartre's philosophical career." -- Man and World "... succinct, richly documented survey... " -- International Studies in Philosophy

This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1987, is a study of the development of Sartre’s political thought from the late 1920s to the liberation of France in 1944, concentrating particularly upon his concept of freedom. It is argued that the evolution of Sartre’s thinking can be regarded as constituting a series of problematics each of which has a corresponding notion of freedom, and these problematics are elucidated in turn.
