Book Synopsis Morphologically Derived Adjectives in Spanish by : Antonio Fábregas
Download or read book Morphologically Derived Adjectives in Spanish written by Antonio Fábregas and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book that presents a complete empirical description and theoretical analysis of all major classes of derived adjectives in Spanish, both deverbal and denominal. The reader will find here both a detailed empirical description of the syntactic, morphological and semantic properties of derived adjectives in contemporary Spanish and a cohesive Neo-Constructionist analysis of the syntactic and semantic tools that contemporary Spanish has available to build adjectives from other grammatical categories within a Nanosyntactic-oriented framework. In doing so, this book sheds light on the nature of adjectives as a grammatical category and argues that adjectives are syntactically built by recycling functional heads belonging to other categories. The book will be useful both to researchers in Spanish linguistics or theoretical morphology and to advanced students of Spanish interested in the main ways of building new adjectives through suffixation in this language.

Book Synopsis Postmodifying Attributive Adjectives in English by : Lars M. Blöhdorn
Download or read book Postmodifying Attributive Adjectives in English written by Lars M. Blöhdorn and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates three different postmodifying adjective constructions in the English language. While English adjectives generally precede the entities they modify, they may also occur in postmodifying position. This study assumes that the different postmodifying constructions are a positional variation of attributive premodification. The support for this claim is derived from a detailed analysis of the general syntax and semantics of adjectives as well as a cross-check of previous theories with a wide range of actual language examples taken from computerized corpora. An approach from the Prague School 'Functional Sentence Perspective' enables this study to accomplish an integrated view of adjectival postmodification.

Book Synopsis A New English Grammar by : Henry Sweet
Download or read book A New English Grammar written by Henry Sweet and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The respected phonetician and philologist Henry Sweet (1845–1912) has had a lasting influence on the study and teaching of linguistics, particularly phonetics and Old English. Sweet is also known for being, in part, the inspiration for Henry Higgins in Shaw's Pygmalion. This two-volume work, first published in 1892–8, marks the start of a new tradition in the study of English, although it received little attention in Britain upon its publication. Building on developments in European linguistics, this was the first grammar of English to adopt a scientific approach to the description of language, in particular of phonology. Volume 1 (1892) contains one of the first studies of English phonology, which applies the same rigorous analysis to the spoken language as to the written, as well as detailed descriptions of the parts of speech, accidence, and the history of English.
