Book Synopsis Japan's Public Sector Balance Sheet by : Yugo Koshima
Download or read book Japan's Public Sector Balance Sheet written by Yugo Koshima and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-10-04 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper compiles and reviews the evolution of Japan’s Public Sector Balance Sheet (PSBS). In the past, large crossholdings of assets and liabilities within the public sector played a role in sustaining a high level of public debt and low interest rates. The Fiscal Investment and Loan Fund (FILF) channeled all postal deposits and pension savings to financing of public sector borrowing. After the FILF refrom in 2000, however, the Post Bank and pension funds shifted their assets to the portfolio investments and are seeking to maximize risk-adjusted returns. This has changed the implications of crossholdings for public debt management. In the future, population aging is expected to add more pressures on the PSBS, which already saw a considerable decrease of net worth over the last three decades.

Book Synopsis National Integration and Local Power in Japan by : Yasuo Takao
Download or read book National Integration and Local Power in Japan written by Yasuo Takao and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this book offers a new study of local government in Japan. There is an enormous amount of information about Japanese local government that has not yet appeared in English. With the author’s local familiarity, elected local officials and local residents have been extraordinarily open and forthcoming. This allows a rethinking of the topic by mobilising a multitude of solid factual material. Japan has dealt with the dramatically increased public sector, but has done so in a setting of institutional centralisation. How has central authority sought to find ways of managing the continuous expansion of state activities? How have local authorities responded to central government’s initiative in integrating state administration? The answers the book gives to these questions present an alternative understanding of Japanese local government.

Book Synopsis The Nonprofit Sector in Japan by : Tadashi Yamamoto
Download or read book The Nonprofit Sector in Japan written by Tadashi Yamamoto and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1998-07-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides the first systematic analysis of the Japanese nonprofit sector ever undertaken. Using a broad range of qualitative and quantitative data, the authors show that Japan has a much larger nonprofit sector than is recognized, even in Japan. Three-quarters of all university students attend nonprofit institutions, significant shares of hospital beds are in nonprofit institutions, and nonprofit agencies are active in the field of social services. Yet in comparative terms the Japanese nonprofit sector lags significantly behind that of other developed economies. One reason for this, the authors argue, is the generally hostile attitude the government has historically taken towards nonprofit organizations in Japan; nonprofit organizations wishing to attain legal status, have to secure the approval of a "competent Ministry," and this is often given begrudgingly or not at all. The nonprofit sector in Japan has only just begun to "flex its muscles" as an independent force in very recent years, and is now on the brink of a new phase in its development.
