Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychopaths in Our Lives contains actual interviews with three "normal' psychopaths. We think of serial killers when we hear the word psychopath, but the vast majority are not in prison, but walking among us. Lacking a conscience, they leave a path of destruction and despair as they pass through. You will read in their own words how they approach relationships, how they manipulate their partners, and what they think about themselves and others. Which one is your psychopath? The lover who broke your heart? The friend who stole your husband? The neighbor who poisoned your dog? The arrogant boss that flaunts his power? Read their words; hear the narcissism and callous indifference. Be prepared before you allow a psychopath to destroy your life. Perhaps you already suspect something wrong in your relationship. What can you do? Knowledge is power, so learn to recognize the behaviors and the tricks that psychopaths use to manipulate their prey. Will you recognize the mind games? Learn about "gaslighting" and the "victim card." Learn not to trust what seems too good to be true. It probably isn't. Psychopaths are focused and intense, ready to pounce when the opportunity arises. They have magnetic personalities, drawing in their victims with their charm and intelligence. They are soulless and coldblooded, extracting pleasure from gaining control and inflicting pain. There is no doubt that there is at least one psychopath in your life. You may not even know it, as psychopaths are typically charming and persuasive. Your partner, your coworker, your boss, your neighbor - any one of them may be a psychopath. Psychopaths pursue their chosen victims with smooth talk and allure until they have total control. Then they play with them like a cat with a mouse, until they become bored and move on to the next target. Their victims feel abandoned and abused, but can't understand what happened or how anyone could be so cruel.

Do you know someone who is too manipulative and full of himself? Does someone you know charm the masses yet lack the ability to deeply connect with those around her?Grandiosity and exaggerated self-worth. Pathological lying. Manipulation. Lack of remorse. Shallowness. Exploitation for financial gain. These are the qualities of Almost Psychopaths. They are spouses, coworkers, bosses, neighbors, and people in the news who exhibit many of the same behaviors as a full-blown psychopath, but with less intensity and consistency. In Almost a Psychopath, Ronald Schouten, MD, JD, and James Silver, JD, draw on scientific research and their own experiences to help you identify if you are an Almost Psychopath and, if so, guide you to interventions and resources to change your behavior. If you think you have encountered an Almost Psychopath, they offer practical tools to help you:recognize the behavior, attitudes, and characteristics of the Almost Psychopath;make sense of interactions you've had with Almost Psychopaths;devise strategies for dealing with them in the present;make informed decisions about your next steps; andlearn ways to help an Almost Psychopath get better control of their behavior. The Almost Effect™ Series presents books written by Harvard Medical School faculty and other experts that offer guidance on common behavioral and physical problems falling in the spectrum between normal health and a full-blown medical condition. These are the first publications to help general readers recognize and address these problems.

Book excerpt: Revised and updated with the latest scientific research and updated case studies, the business classic that offers a revealing look at psychopaths in the workplace—how to spot their destructive behavior and stop them from creating chaos in the modern corporate organization. Over the past decade, Snakes in Suits has become the definitive book on how to discover and defend yourself against psychopaths in the office. Now, Dr. Paul Babiak and Dr. Robert D. Hare return with a revised and updated edition of their essential guide. All of us at some point have—or will—come into contact with psychopathic individuals. The danger they present may not be readily apparent because of their ability to charm, deceive, and manipulate. Although not necessarily criminal, their self-serving nature frequently is destructive to the organizations that employ them. So how can we protect ourselves and our organizations in a business climate that offers the perfect conditions for psychopaths to thrive? In Snakes in Suits, Hare, an expert on the scientific study of psychopathy, and Babiak, an industrial and organizational psychologist and a leading authority on the corporate psychopath, examine the role of psychopaths in modern corporations and provide the tools employers can use to avoid and deal with them. Together, they have developed the B-Scan 360, a research tool designed specifically for business professionals. Dr. Babiak and Dr. Hare reveal the secret lives of psychopaths, explain the ways in which they manipulate and deceive, and help you to see through their games. The rapid pace of today’s corporate environment provides the perfect breeding ground for these "snakes in suits" and this newly revised and updated classic gives you the insight, information, and power to protect yourself and your company before it’s too late.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of the bestselling Surrounded by Idiots series! #1 internationally bestselling author Thomas Erikson shows readers how to identify and avoid the psychopaths around them. Charming, charismatic, and delightful or manipulative, self-serving, and cunning? Psychopaths are both and that’s exactly what makes them dangerous. Bestselling author of the international phenomenon Surrounded by Idiots, Thomas Erikson reveals how to identify the psychopaths in your life and combat their efforts to control and manipulate. Using the same simple four-color system of behavior classification that made Surrounded by Idiots so popular, Surrounded by Psychopaths teaches readers how to deal with psychopaths in their lives by becoming aware of their own behavior and their weaknesses. Vivid example stories illustrate ways that psychopaths can take advantage of various behavior types, helping readers identify their own weaknesses and be proactive about protecting themselves. Erikson outlines some of the most common forms of manipulation used by psychopaths—and others—to influence those around them. Since manipulation can often be a feature of ordinary, non-psychopathic relationships, the book also includes practical methods and techniques to help readers confront controlling people and rehabilitate negative relationships into mutually respectful ones. By understanding your behavior as well as the tendencies and strategies of psychopaths, Surrounded by Psychopaths will teach you to protect yourself from manipulative influence in your workplace, social life, and family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is Cindy and my deepest desire, since I was a child, was to do something fulfilling with my life. This desire came from all the devastation I witnessed. Then, I came across a Zen proverb, "May we exist like the lotus at ease in muddy water." My childhood was like slopping through mud but where was my lotus? The more I remembered of my youth the more horrified I became. I was waking up from a terrifying nightmare. I knew I needed help but what or who could help me? In my fervor, I recognized that I was being as hard on myself as those who had harmed me. How could I exist at ease as a beautiful lotus flower in the midst of all this muck which continued to envelop me no matter how hard I pushed to get out? The immediate answer to that question was to begin writing my story. It is contained in the following pages. As I wrote I realized that it was my desire to heal my own deep wounds and thereby being of service to others. Fortunately, I had many normal experiences growing up but the uniqueness was in the travesty of abuse and disregard for human life that daily filled my youth. The fact that it was perpetrated over many years by my parents and forced upon me and my siblings is, to this day, beyond my comprehension. However, I didn't write this for comprehension, mine or anyone else's, I wrote this for healing and transformation. I choose to share my intense family story and continue to transform my life into the lotus.I began to write my story as a single mother in my mid-thirties with three children having the goal in mind to not pass this down to my kids. When I wasn't talking to a professional, reading a self-help book or attending spiritual meetings in order to free my soul I was trying to live a normal life and give my kids a normal life. I just wanted to be sane. As I wrote, I became certain of one thing. I needed to know the details and the facts as a gateway to transformation and forgiveness. I needed the truth of my experiences and a release from my story. Then I could offer service to others as I continue to heal. So here is my story and process in chronological order. I welcome you on my path of rising and blooming above the murk and finding my lotus. WARNING! This story contains graphic details of my real life story. I experienced domestic violence, sexual abuse, prostitution and ritual murder of children and adults. In this book I go into the details of my life. It's in the details that I have found healing. This book is meant to be a workbook also and is an in-depth study of abuse, mental illness and living with psychopathic parents. There are a total of eight books which lead up to my present day life. I invite you stay with me to hear of the gifts in all this abuse. If you choose to just read my experiences and you start to get triggered then take a break, find a support person, do the added sections after each chapter or if desired create a notebook and follow the suggestions under the workbook sections to write or draw your experiences.I survived and am writing this book to show there is hope to be able to thrive.

Book excerpt: Patricia Highsmith's The Price of Salt is now a major motion picture (Carol) starring Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska, directed by Todd Hayes A 2010 New York Times Notable Book A 2010 Lambda Literary Award Winner A 2009 Edgar Award Nominee A 2009 Agatha Award Nominee A Publishers Weekly Pick of the Week Patricia Highsmith, one of the great writers of twentieth-century American fiction, had a life as darkly compelling as that of her favorite "hero-criminal," the talented Tom Ripley. Joan Schenkar maps out this richly bizarre life from her birth in Texas to Hitchcock's filming of her first novel, Strangers on a Train, to her long, strange self-exile in Europe. We see her as a secret writer for the comics, a brilliant creator of disturbing fictions, and an erotic predator with dozens of women (and a few good men) on her love list. The Talented Miss Highsmith is the first literary biography with access to Highsmith's whole story: her closest friends, her oeuvre, her archives. It's a compulsive page-turner unlike any other, a book worthy of Highsmith herself.

Book excerpt: An “absorbing, provocative, and far-reaching” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) look at what power is, who gets it, and what happens when they do, based on over 500 interviews with those who (temporarily, at least) have had the upper hand—from the creator of the Power Corrupts podcast and Washington Post columnist Brian Klaas. Does power corrupt, or are corrupt people drawn to power? Are tyrants made or born? Are entrepreneurs who embezzle and cops who kill the result of poorly designed systems or are they just bad people? If you were suddenly thrust into a position of power, would you be able to resist the temptation to line your pockets or seek revenge against your enemies? To answer these questions, Corruptible draws on over 500 interviews with some of the world’s top leaders—from the noblest to the dirtiest—including presidents and philanthropists as well as rebels, cultists, and dictators. Some of the fascinating insights include: how facial appearance determines who we pick as leaders, why narcissists make more money, why some people don’t want power at all and others are drawn to it out of a psychopathic impulse, and why being the “beta” (second in command) may actually be the optimal place for health and well-being. Corruptible also features a wealth of counterintuitive examples from history and social science: you’ll meet the worst bioterrorist in American history, hit the slopes with a ski instructor who once ruled Iraq, and learn why the inability of chimpanzees to play baseball is central to the development of human hierarchies. Based on deep, unprecedented research from around the world, and filled with “unexpected insights…the most important lesson of Corruptible is that when psychopaths inadvertently reveal their true selves, the institutions that they plague must take action that is swift, brutal, and merciless” (Business Insider).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author Christopher Berry-Dee returns with a companion volume that delves even deeper into the evil world of psychopaths and their hideous crimes. In Talking with Psychopaths: Beyond Evil, criminologist Berry-Dee combines sections on killers whom he has known, interviewed, or corresponded with, with studies of psychopathic serial killers from the past, including Peter Kurten, the Dusseldorf Monster; John Christie, a murderer and necrophile; and Neville Heath, a ladykiller in every sense of the word. The result is a chilling narrative that sets the forensic examination of killers and their crimes within the context of murder in the 20th and 21st centuries, and the insoluble problem of identifying these psychopaths. This is not a book for the squeamish but is undeniably fascinating in its portrayal of just what one human being will do to another—while all too often moving among us unnoticed and unhindered. If their crimes seem as incomprehensible as they are horrific, it is undeniably true that the world’s most wicked killers may be much closer than we think.
