Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1902 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III EXTRAORDINARY PHENOMENA IN THE LIVES OF THE SAINTS C IMILAR discoveries will be easily made by anyone who takes the trouble to make a separate and careful study of the lives of the best known saints. The examples given above, are, however, sufficient for present purposes. Let us now see what effect their vocation, once solidly established, has upon the natural gifts of the saints. It does not, as we have seen, suppress them; but we should wish, if possible, to know how it contrives to work in harmony with them. The saint has renounced the joys of this world--or at least he has resolved only to use them with the greatest humility. He may have joined some community, whose members, though to all appearances vowed to the service of God, have no small share left of vanity and self-love, ' and in consequence he has had a harder battle than usual to fight, in order to purify himself and to influence his brethren for good. But he has at length destroyed everything that he has been able to detect in himself, contrary to the love of God and his neighbour, and henceforward he appears as if freed from the bondage of nature which he has, as it were, completely trampled upon. He continues, however, to live, think, 64 imagine, act, to feel pleasure and pain, to suffer and to love. What has been the effect, upon these various faculties, of this transformation of his whole being? We have already said that the saints are not necessarily persons of weak health, destined to an early grave They are, however, subject to innumerable illnesses and they bless God for the trial. Some of these illnesses are of no psychological interest. Troubles of the stomach, and liver and lungs in their many varieties, are much the same in all men, and if sanctity..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ignatius of Loyola--knight and saint, mystic and ascetic, founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits)--was one of the greatest figures in Western Christianity. This book, written by a psychiatrist-psychoanalyst who is also a Jesuit, is the first work to look behind the events, accounts, and documents of Ignatius' life and religious experience in order to enter and understand his inner world. W. W. Meissner writes compassionately about Ignatius' origins, early development, conversion, years of prayer and penance, mystical teaching and career, and finally his efforts to found and direct the Society of Jesus. Dr. Meissner not only places Ignatius' life against the background of the radical religious, social, and political upheaval of the sixteenth century but goes beyond this to explore the psychic and psychodynamic inner processes that transformed the man into the saint. Dr. Meissner discusses, for example, Ignatius' ordeals of body and spirit during his career as a soldier, his conversion experience, the evolution of his personality after conversion, his relationships with women, his lifelong struggles to overcome his aggressive, narcissistic, and libidinal impulses, and the psychology and pathology of his mysticism. The complex personality of this great saint and the profundity of his personal and spiritual struggles bring into focus significant questions about the complex interplay between human motivations and needs on the one hand and religious experience and spiritual motivation on the other. The book is not only a biography of a much-revered figure of the Roman Catholic Church but a unique contribution to both psychoanalysis and religious history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thb Psychology of the Saints Having treated successively of the psychology of the inferior animals, of the psychology of great men, and of the psychology of criminals, I now come to the psychology of the saints. We may ask: Are all these different psychologies utterly distinct one from the other? Is instinct an occult possession and crime a phenomenon standing quite by itself, a thing apart, the offspring of a deviation or spontaneous retrogression of the human race? Is the great man a mysterious gift of the Unconscious or the sudden incarnation of a spirit which sets at defiance all attempts at analysis? Is the saint a being in whom a miraculous agency has completely ousted and supplanted nature? - I have, in turn, endeavoured to combat every one of these notions. There is one other theory, however, to which I am quite as unwilling to subscribe, and that is the theory that all manifestations of the human faculties, from the lowest even to the very highest, are produced by the blind and automatic action of our inferior powers. Too often we are late in realizing that we mishandled a situation, causing both resentment and frustration. But what if you could approach every situation with the mind of Christ? Distilled from his decades of experience as a clinical psychologist and a practicing Catholic, Dr. Ray Guarendi, popular radio and TV host, offers here dozens of bite-sized reflections that combine sound spiritual advice with the best of modern psychology. Dr. Ray will help you address countless daily problems and create a plan of action for your most common troubles. With his trademark frankness and humor, Dr. Ray tackles all the topics that too often bring confusion and heartache, including: What to do when you’re easily offendedCommon excuses parents make for bad behavior in their children—and themselvesThe difference between speaking your mind and losing your emotions. The fine line between being a confident evangelist and being a jerk? What you should do when emotions overwhelm you?How to hold your children to high standards without causing resentmentThe difference between making an excuse and justifying an actionHow to tell people you’re angry without being nasty about it.What true humility is – and isn’t. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychopath. The word conjurs up images of serial killers, rapists, suicide bombers, gangsters. But think again: you could probably benefit from being a little more psychopathic yourself. Psychologist Kevin Dutton has made a speciality of psychopathy, and is on first-name terms with many notorious killers. But unlike those incarcerated psychopaths, and all those depicted in movies and crime fiction, most are not violent, he explains. In fact, says Prof Dutton, they have a lot of good things going for them. Psychopaths are fearless, confident, charismatic and focused--qualities tailor-made for success in today's society. The Wisdom of Psychopaths is an intellectual rollercoaster ride that combines lightning-hot science with unprecedented access to secret monasteries, Special Forces training camps, and high-security hospitals. In it, you will meet serial killers, war heroes, financiers, movie stars and attorneys--and discover that beneath the hype and popular characterization, psychopaths have something to teach us. Like the knobs on a mixing deck, psychopathy is graded. And finding the right combination of psychopathic traits, sampled and mixed at carefully calibrated volumes, can put us ahead of the game.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many complexities associated with ministering to another person. Where does a helper begin? What’s important to notice? Is there an overall ministry strategy that’s beneficial? Saints, Sufferers, and Sinners by author and counselor Michael R. Emlet outlines a model of one-another ministry based on how God sees and loves his people. Emlet helps readers use Scripture to find foundational categories for understanding and approaching one another, which serve as guideposts for wise care. Filled with everyday illustrations as well as counseling examples, Emlet demonstrates what it looks like to approach fellow believers simultaneously as saints, sufferers, and sinners. As part of CCEF's Helping the Helper series, this guide for ministry provides an overall framework for wisely helping any person, balancing all three aspects of our experience as Christians.
