Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Nations: A Contribution to the Philosophy of History This book contains two closely related studies of the consciousness of nations. It has been written during the closing months of the war and in the days that have followed. and is completed while the Peace Conference is still in session, holding in the balance, as many believe, the fate of many hopes, and perhaps the whole future of the world. We see focussed there in Paris all the motives that have ever entered into human history and all the ideals that have influenced human affairs. The question must have arisen in all minds in some form as to what the place of these motives and ideals and dramatic moments is in the progress of the world. Is the world governed after all by the laws of nature in all its progress? Do ideals and motives govern the world, but only as these ideals and motives arc themselves produced according to biological or psychological principles? Or, again, does progress depend upon historical moments, upon conscious purposes which may divert the course of nature and in a real sense create the future? It is with the whole problem of history that we are confronted in these practical hours. At heart our problem is that of the place of man in nature as a conscious factor of progress. This is a problem, finally, of the philosophy, of history, but it is rather in a more concrete way and upon a different level that it is to be considered here, - and somewhat incidentally to other more specific questions. But this is the problem that is always before us, and the one to which this study aims to make some contribution, however small. Book excerpt: Waardenburg’s magisterial essay traces the rise and development of the academic study of religion from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, outlining the establishment of the discipline, its connections with other fields, religion as a subject of research, and perspectives on a phenomenological study of religion. Futhermore a second part comprises an anthology of texts from 41 scholars whose work was programmatic in the evolution of the academic study of religion. Each chapter presents a particular approach, theory, and method relevant to the study of religion. The pieces selected for this volume were taken from the discipline of religious studies as well as from related fields, such as anthropology, sociology, and psychology, to name a few.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American People: A Study in National Psychology the Harvesting of a Nation It would be tedious and valueless to repeat the proof I adduced that the character of Americans and the institutions Of America owe their influence to English inspiration, for to say more would be merely to reproduce in amplified form what has already been stated. T O prove a negative is an im possibility; and my critics have contented them selves with questioning my deductions without bringing evidence to challenge my reasoning. An examination Of the institutions Of America, Of its political philosophy, Of its system Of jurisprudence; Of the thought and customs and viewpoint Of life of its people, will show that they are English in ori gin and that they have not been colored or moulded by those Of any other nation.
