Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psalms With Introductions and Critical Notes This Psalm may be regarded as one of the most interesting in the whole Psalter. The spiritual life, illumined by only a partial revelation, is here presented to us in its inner conflicts. The various phases of the struggle, the misgivings expressed only to be repressed, the perplexity, the final re-assurance and self-reproof, are portrayed with almost dramatic reality. The difficult problem, which forms the subject of this Psalm, is that which meets us in Psalm xxxvii, and in the books of Job and Ecclesiastes (cf. also Mai. iii.13 sq.), viz. How is it that those who give themselves up to wickedness often seem to fare better than those who strive to serve God? The Law had nowhere distinctly promised a continued existence after death, however much it implied it; moreover it had promised temporal rewards and punishments, at any rate to the nation, if not to individuals. To the Israelite then, this problem was perhaps even more difficult than to the thinkers of other nations. While he had but a dim foresight of the world to come, he had a clear revelation of the justice of the Divine Rule. How was he to reconcile existing circumstances with his knowledge of Gods attributes.? In the Psalm before us the Poets peace of mind seems to have been restored by attending the public worship of the sanctuary. There, in company with the generation of Gods children, joining with them in the worship of Jehovah, and hearing the words of the Law, he became convinced that in the end (whenever that might be), under the government of Perfect Righteousness, goodness must prevail, and wickedness must perish. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psalms With Introductions and Critical Notes: Books I and II, Psalms I, to LXXII In one respect alone does the art fail to reach its culminating point under the hands of David. His Psalms commonly lack the smooth ness and polish which give a kind of artificial beauty to the far inferior compositions of the post-exilic period. They are characterized by a terseness of expression which not unfrequently obscures the sense intended. To the ear they are often harsh and rugged. In fact the majority of them - these traits are not always present, and Psalms viii., xix., xxiii. Are remarkable exceptions to the rule - must have been very ill-adapted for public singing, and all attempts of translators to repro duce the sense and at the same time introduce such uniform rhythm as is required by musical schemes, have as yet proved failures. Our Prayer book Version recklessly sacrifices the sense to sound. In David's time musical (not poetical) schools were founded under the presidency of Asaph and others, and the sons of Korah, probably not long afterwards, undertook the actual vocal performance of such hymns as were used in public service. For the relation of these guilds of musicians and singers to the Poetry of the Psalter, see Proleg., Chap. VI. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Psalms, Vol. 1: A New Translation With Introductions and Notes, Explanatory and Critical The Second Edition of this work will not be found to differ very materially from the First. I have made a few additions, more particularly to the Critical Notes in some of the earlier Psalms; and I have corrected errors wherever I have discovered them, or where they have been pointed out to me by friends. All the references have been carefully revised. Many of the apparent mistakes in the references of the First Edition were due to my having used the Hebrew Bible, without taking due care to mark where the Hebrew division of chapters or verses varied from the English. Where these differ, it will now be found, I hope, that both references are given, those to the Hebrew text being enclosed in square brackets. If, however, the double reference has still been omitted in some cases, it may be borne in mind that in all Psalms which have an inscription, the inscription is reckoned as a verse (occasionally as two verses) in the Hebrew text, whereas this is not the case in the English. Consequently the first verse in the English may be the second or even the third in the Hebrew, and so on all through. In the Critical Notes the references are always to the Hebrew text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Psalms, Vol. 2: A New Translation With Introductions and Notes, Explanatory and Critical There are some questions which never lose their interest, some problems of which it may be said, that they are ever old and yet ever new. Not the least anxious of such questions are those which deal with God's moral government of the world. They lie close to man's heart, and are ever asking and pressing for solution. They may differ in different times, they may assume various forms, but perhaps no man ever looked thoughtfully on the world as it is, without seeing much that was hard to reconcile with a belief in the love and wisdom of God. One form of this moral difficulty pressed heavily upon the pious Jew under the old Dispensation. It was this: Why should good men suffer, and bad men prosper? This difficulty was aggravated, we must remember, by what seemed to be the manifest contradiction between the express teaching of his Law and the observed facts of human experience. The Law told him that God was a righteous Judge, meting out to men in this world the due recompense of their deeds. The course of the world, where those who had cast off the fear of God were rich and powerful, made him ready to question this truth, and was a serious stumbling-block to his faith. And further, "the Hebrew mind had never risen to the conception of universal law, but was accustomed to regard all visible phenomena as the immediate result of a free Sovereign Will. Direct interposition, even arbitrary interference, was no difficulty to the Jew, to whom Jehovah was the absolute Sovereign of the world, not acting, so far as he could see, according to any established order." Hence it seemed to him inexplicable that the world of life should not reflect perfectly, as in a mirror, the righteousness of God. This is the perplexity which appears in this Psalm, as it does in the 37th, and also in the Book of Job. Substantially it is the same problem: but it is met differently. In the 37th Psalm the advice given is to wait, to trust in Jehovah, and to rest assured that in the end the seeming disorder will be set right even in this world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Translation of the Book of Psalms: With an Introduction, and Notes, Chiefly Explanatory Another obstacle to a proper estimate of the poetry of the Scrip tures is the very imperfect translation, and wretched arrangement, in which it has been presented to English readers. Let the lover of poetry imagine what impressions he should receive from the odes of Collins or Gray, cut up into fragments like the verses in the common version of the Bible, and he may comprehend what injustice has been done to the Hebrew poets. The compositions in the Book of Psalms are the productions of various authors and periods, belong to different species of poetry, and possess various degrees of poetic merit. While some of them present the fresh gushes of excited feeling, or the calmer expres sion of the sublimest sentiments, in the boldest lan guage of poetry, others consist only of moral maxims artificially arranged in a sen tentions style, or of elaborate and imitative prayers and praises, prepared for the public worship of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psalms and Lamentations, Vol. 1 of 2: Edited, With an Introduction and Notes These selections are not designed to be read with the aim of instruction, but to be recited for the ends of worship. The book is not a lectionary, but a manual of devotion. In the view of the writers, both of the Old Testament and the New, worship 1 is the offering to God of thought and emotion in some form of expression. The worshiper is not passive, but active; not the subject of impressions, but the agent of expressions. It is enough that his mind he engaged in thought, his heart excited in emotion. He must direct, lift up, his soul to God, and signify or utter his sentiment, his thoughtful emotion, to him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Translation of the Book of Psalms and of the Proverb: With Introductions, and Notes, Chiefly Explanatory The Book of Psalms has been styled by some of the German critics, in allusion to a portion of Grecian literature, The Hebrew Anthology; that is, a collection of the lyric, moral, historical, and elegiac poetry of the Hebrews. Regarded in this light alone, it presents a most interesting subject of literary taste and curiosity. Many of these psalms must have been composed some hundreds of years before the period which is commonly assigned to the origin of the Iliad of Homer. But it is not with them as with many of the productions of the classic Muse, of which the antiquity constitutes their greatest claim upon the attention of the scholar, and of which the subjects possess little or no interest for the world in its manhood. It was the privilege of the Hebrew bards to be employed upon subjects possessing an interest as enduring as the attributes of God and the nature of dependent man. Their poetry has the deep foundation of eternal truth. It comes, for the most part, in language the most glowing, from the very depths of the soul, rich in sentiments adapted to the soul's most urgent wants. Hence its living spirit, its immortal freshness. Hence its power of reaching the hearts of all men, in all countries and in all ages. Where, in the whole compass of literature, can one find more of the "thoughts that breathe and words that burn" than in the Hebrew Anthology? Then, too, what variety is there in the subjects of these ancient compositions! How diverse the states of heart and fortune that occasioned them! Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Psalms, Vol. 2 Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons of New York, and Messrs T. T. Clark of Edinburgh, propose to publish such a series of Commentaries on the Old and New Testaments, under the editorship of Prof. C. A. Briggs, D.D., in America, and of Prof. S. R. Driver, D.D for the Old Testament, and the Rev. Alfred plummer, DD, for the New Testament, in Great Britain. The Commentaries will be international and inter-confessional, and will be free from polemical and ecclesiastical bias. They will be based upon a thorough critical study of the original texts of the Bible, and upon critical methods of interpretation. They are designed chiefly for students and clergymen, and will be written in a compact style. Each book will be preceded by an Introduction, stating the results of criticism upon it, and discuss ing impartially the questions still remaining open. The details of criticism will appear in their proper place in the body of the Commentary. Each section of the d104 will be introduced with a paraphrase, or summary of contents. Technical details of textual and philological criticism will, as a rule, be kept distinct from matter of a more general character; and in the Old Testament the exegetical notes will be arranged, as far as possible, so as to be serviceable to students not acquainted with Hebrew. The History of Interpretation of the Books will be dealt with, when necessary, in the Introductions, with critical notices of the most important literature ofthe subject. Historical and Archaeological questions, as well as questions of Biblical Theology, are included in the plan of the Commentaries, but not Practical or Homiletical Exegesis. The Volumes will con stitute a uniform series. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
