Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Proverbs for All Ages is a beautifully-illustrated, engaging picture book about the power of proverbs, how they evolve over time, and the wisdom of various cultures in Africa. It has been said that a proverb is a short sentence based on long experience. Whether you are young or old, proverbs can open your mind to a whole new way of seeing the world. We underestimate children when we assume they are incapable of understanding metaphor and deeper meaning. There are multiple ways that children learn, but for each method by which they learn, they need their imagination engaged and their visual sensibilities ignited. And as adults, we underestimate ourselves when we allow our lives to be about practical matters only. Proverbs can stir our soul and spark our imagination. --Johnnetta Betsch Cole, Ph.D. President Emerita of Spelman and Bennett Colleges In African Proverbs for All Ages, noted anthropologist and educator Dr. Johnetta Betsch Cole and award-winning illustrator Nelda LaTeef invite children and adults to explore and reflect on complex notions about relationships, identity, society, and the human condition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over twenty-five years in the making, this much-anticipated commentary promises to be the standard study of Proverbs for years to come. Written by eminent Old Testament scholar Bruce Waltke, this two-volume commentary is unquestionably the most comprehensive work on Proverbs available. Grounded in the new literary criticism that has so strengthened biblical interpretation of late, Waltke's commentary on Proverbs demonstrates the profound, ongoing relevance of this Old Testament book for Christian faith and life. A thorough introduction addresses such issues as text and versions, structure, authorship, and theology. The detailed commentary itself explains and elucidates Proverbs as "theological literature." Waltke's highly readable style -- evident even in his original translation of the Hebrew text -- makes his scholarly work accessible to teachers, pastors, Bible students, and general readers alike.

Book excerpt: A vital resource for educators, this collection offers refl ections on and samples of units and lessons with an anti-racism orientation that promote inclusive educational practices for today’s increasingly diverse K–12 classrooms. Engaging with multicentric cultural knowledges and stories, the contributors—consisting of classroom teachers, community workers, and adult educators—present units and lesson plans that challenge the Eurocentricity of curriculum design while also having practical applicability within various North American curricular models. These curriculum designs make space for students’ lived experiences inside the classroom and amplify critical social values, such as community building, social justice, equity, fairness, resistance, and collective responsibility, thereby addressing the issue of youth disengagement and promoting productive inclusion. Rich with sample units and lessons that are grounded in African oral traditions, this ground-breaking resource features critical guiding questions, suggestions for ongoing and culminating classroom activities, templates and resources, and notes to the teacher. Centering African Proverbs, Indigenous Folktales, and Cultural Stories in Curriculum is an essential tool for practising teachers, professional learning providers, and students in education and teaching programs across Canada and the United States.

Book excerpt: The Book of Jonah is a unique text in the Jewish canon. Among the shortest books in the Bible, it is also one of the most mysterious and morally ambiguous. Who is this prophet running from God, hiding at the bottom of the ocean? Why does he struggle with God's mission to save and forgive Israel's enemies? In this volume, Rabbi Dr. Yanklowitz shows that the Book of Jonah delivers a message of human responsibility in a shared world. Illuminating such contemporary ethical issues as animal welfare, incarceration, climate change, weapons of mass destruction, and Jewish-Muslim relations, this social justice commentary urges us to join in repairing a broken world--a call that we, unlike Jonah, must hasten to answer.

Book excerpt: The poetic books of the Old Testament--Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon--are often called humankind's reach toward God. The other books of the Old Testament picture God's reach toward man through the redemptive story. Yet these five books reveal the very hear of men and women struggling with monumental issues such as suffering, sin, forgiveness, joy, worship, and the passionate love between a man and woman. C. Hassell Bullock, a noted Old Testament scholar, delves deep into the hearts of the five poetic books, offering readers helpful details such as harmeneutical considerations for each book, theological content and themes, detailed analysis of each book, and cultural perspectives. Hebrew is a language of "intrinsic musical quality that naturally supports poetic expression," says Bullock in his introduction. That poetic expression comes from the heart of the Old Testament writers and reaches all of us exactly where we are in our own struggles and joys.

Book excerpt: Critical to the sustainability of this growing movement is the ability of Christians to read, reflect on, and see the implications of the Bible for themselves and their daily contexts – their frontlines. It’s a goal that we’ve pursued through a variety of publications - the work series, Frutifulness on the Frontline, and the Whole of Life for Christ. What we have not done is to self-consciously equip people to read different genres of the Bible through a whole-life lens. In light of this, we’re developing a series of Bible studies which align with LICC’s mission and activities and support biblical literacy in the UK church more broadly. The study series has emerged from the regular Bible Days we’ve been running over the last years for leaders and preachers. The whole-life aspect of the Bible is seen not only in the big story it tells, but also in the different kinds of writings it contains – stories and songs, laws and letters, proverbs and parables, poetry and prophecy. It’s the specific lens of genre which has provided insight into the Word of God for the whole of life through LICC’s Bible Days. The Proposal We propose to publish a 7-study series for individuals and small groups around the main genres of the Bible that will enable Christians to: · Study seven single books of the Bible (independently of one another, though they form a series) ·Develop insight and skills in reading 7 different genres of Bible literature · Reflect on the implications of each book and genre for the whole of life ·Develop applications which support and direct their life as disciples in their everyday, frontline contexts In addition, the series will: · Provide a resource to church leaders that supports their preaching and programmes in creating sustainable whole-life disciplemaking communities Complement a ‘Preaching Pack’
