Smith, of Penzance, Vol. 1 James. If you mean that we should improve the time allowed us by our officers to be on shore, so that we may be gratified with the reflection of it on board, you lave my hearty concurrence; but if you mean that we should rush into all the vices that we possibly zcan shore, because we must soon go on board again, I hope you will not be angry with me, if I differ from you on that point. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Smith U. S. A From whatever point of view the character of Eugene Field is seen, genius - rare and quaint presents itself is childlike simplicity. That he was a poet of keen perception, of rare discrimina tion, all will admit. He was a humorist as deli cate and fanciful as Artemus Ward, Mark Twain, Bill Nye, James Whitcomb Riley, Opie Read, or Bret Harte in their happiest moods. Within him ran a poetic vein, capable of being worked in any direction, and from which he could, at will, extract that which his imagination saw and felt most. That he occasionally left the child-world, in which he longed to linger, to wander among the older children of men, where intuitively the hungry listener follows him into his Temple of Mirth, all should rejoice, for those who knew him not, can while away the moments imbibing the genius of his imagination in the poetry and prose here presented. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from I. Prose Works; II. Poetical Works To this, and other attacks Of the Puritan writers, Bishops hall and usher soon after replied; the first in An humble Remonstrance to the High Court Of Parliament, and the last in The Apostolical Institution of Episcopacy. MIL ton had commenced the controversy, and he did not shrink from its prosecution. He thought that on subjects to the consideration of which he was early led solely by his love Of truth and reverence for Christianity, he should not reason worse than they who were contending only for their emoluments and usurpa tions. He wrote, therefore, in answer to the bishops, the tract on Prelatical Episcopacy, and in the same year, The Reason of Church Government urged against Prelacy. In the preface to the second book Of this last treatise, he discloses with a calm confidence the high opinion he held of his own powers, and gives promise of a work which his mind, in the spacious circuit of her musing, had proposed to herself, not to be raised from the heat of youth or the vapours of wine, like that which ows at waste from the pen of some vulgar amorist or the trencher fury Of a rhyming parasite, but by devout prayer to the eternal Spirit, who can enrich with all utterance and knowledge, and sends out his seraphim with the hallowed fire of his altar to touch and purify the lips Of whom he pleases. This is the prophetic announcement of Paradise Lost, from which he turned for a while his thoughts, in Obedience to God's secretary Conscience, to embark in a troubled sea Of noises and hoarse disputes. Bishop hall came out with a Defence of the Remonstrance, which was quickly succeeded by milton's Animadversions, in the form of a dialogue, and written in a lighter and more satirical vein than his previous works, though not without some passages of solemn and impressive eloquence. John McNeill, Vol. 1 You remember that story of how one evening, when walking with His disciples, in coming to a certain place He made as if He would go farther. He had no intention of going farther. From all eternity He meant to enter there. And yet Scripture says, He made as if He would go farther. Christ is just like ourselves - He likes to be pressed, and to be made welcome. Like one of your own friends, perhaps, whom you know to be of a shy and retiring disposition; one who does not like to force himself upon anybody. And when you ask some one who knows him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the common people and the Industrial Revolution: “A true masterpiece” and one of the Modern Library’s 100 Best Nonfiction Books of the twentieth century (Tribune). During the formative years of the Industrial Revolution, English workers and artisans claimed a place in society that would shape the following centuries. But the capitalist elite did not form the working class—the workers shaped their own creations, developing a shared identity in the process. Despite their lack of power and the indignity forced upon them by the upper classes, the working class emerged as England’s greatest cultural and political force. Crucial to contemporary trends in all aspects of society, at the turn of the nineteenth century, these workers united into the class that we recognize all across the Western world today. E. P. Thompson’s magnum opus, The Making of the English Working Class defined early twentieth-century English social and economic history, leading many to consider him Britain’s greatest postwar historian. Its publication in 1963 was highly controversial in academia, but the work has become a seminal text on the history of the working class. It remains incredibly relevant to the social and economic issues of current times, with the Guardian saying upon the book’s fiftieth anniversary that it “continues to delight and inspire new readers.”
