Book Synopsis The Prophetic Tradition and Radical Rhetoric in America by : James Darsey
Download or read book The Prophetic Tradition and Radical Rhetoric in America written by James Darsey and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1999-09-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This expansive volume traces the rhetoric of reform across American history, examining such pivotal periods as the American Revolution, slavery, McCarthyism, and today's gay liberation movement. At a time when social movements led by religious leaders, from Louis Farrakhan to Pat Buchanan, are playing a central role in American politics, James Darsey connects this radical tradition with its prophetic roots. Public discourse in the West is derived from the Greek principles of civility, diplomacy, compromise, and negotiation. On this model, radical speech is often taken to be a sympton of social disorder. Not so, contends Darsey, who argues that the rhetoric of reform in America represents the continuation of a tradition separate from the commonly accepted principles of the Greeks. Though the links have gone unrecognized, the American radical tradition stems not from Aristotle, he maintains, but from the prophets of the Hebrew Bible.

Book Synopsis Lore of Light by : Hajjah Amina Adil
Download or read book Lore of Light written by Hajjah Amina Adil and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a narration of Imam Ahmad, Abu Dharr asked Prophet Muhammad, "O Messenger of Allah, how many are the prophets?" He replied, "120,000 and between their number are 315 messengers." The Holy Quran mentions twenty-five of these messengers, namely: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Zacharia, John (the Baptist), Idris (Enoch), Jonah, Hud, Shu ayb, Salih, Lot, Ilyas, Ilya sa, Dhu 'l-Kifl, Jesus and Sayyidina Muhammad, peace be upon them all. These are the messengers of God who came with holy books containing the Divine Message. The others are prophets who received divine revelation but who were not ordered to deliver it to anyone; it was for them. By way of example, all of Jacob's sons were prophets, but Joseph was the only messenger from among them. Laboriously compiled from rare manuscripts, traditional Islamic texts, and other printed source material, including ahadith and athar and the many traditional books of history, and painstakingly translated from Ottoman Turkish to English, Lore of Light depicts the perfected, blessed character and refined manners that God bestowed on His blessed prophets and messengers. This illustrious work examines the lives of the prophets and messengers of God in great detail, heretofore unknown in English literature on their lives. It depicts the great lengths to which these holy figures went - at times losing life, suffering humiliation, torment and abuse from those who opposed them, often leaving their homes, always tolerant of their attackers and seeking peace - to guide the many peoples and nations of the world towards the light which God has sent throughout time for humankind's betterment and upliftment.
Book Synopsis Culture and Anarchy by : Matthew Arnold
Download or read book Culture and Anarchy written by Matthew Arnold and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2019-06-28 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture and Anarchy is a series of essays by Matthew Arnold. According to his view advanced in the book, "Culture is a study of perfection". His often quoted phrase "[culture is] the best which has been thought and said" comes from the Preface to Culture and Anarchy: The whole scope of the essay is to recommend culture as the great help out of our present difficulties; culture being a pursuit of our total perfection by means of getting to know, on all the matters which most concern us, the best which has been thought and said in the world, and, through this knowledge, turning a stream of fresh and free thought upon our stock notions and habits, which we now follow staunchly but mechanically, vainly imagining that there is a virtue in following them staunchly which makes up for the mischief of following them mechanically. The book contains most of the terms - culture, sweetness and light, Barbarian, Philistine, Hebraism, and many others - which are more associated with Arnold's work influence.
Book Synopsis Ecclesiastes (Redesign) by : Philip Graham Ryken
Download or read book Ecclesiastes (Redesign) written by Philip Graham Ryken and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2014-11-05 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Ecclesiastes is, above all else, unflinchingly honest. Whether wrestling with the tedium of work, the injustices of life, the ravages of age, or the inevitability of death, this enigmatic Old Testament book takes a hard look at the way the world really is. And yet, as Phil Ryken points out in this instructive commentary, Ecclesiastes wisely teaches people to trust God in the midst of such struggles. Written with pastors and Bible teachers in mind, this commentary will equip readers to better understand, explain, and apply the message of Ecclesiastes, highlighting the book’s enduring relevance as a testament to the ultimate duty of all people: fearing God and keeping his commandments. The Psalms is one of the most widely loved books of the Bible. A source of instruction for our prayers, inspiration for our songs, and consolation for our tears, these biblical poems resound with the whole spectrum of human emotion and teach us to hope in God each and every day. In the first volume of a three-part commentary on the Psalms, pastor James Johnston walks readers through chapters 1–44, offering exegetical and pastoral insights along the way. In an age that prizes authenticity, this resource will help anyone interested in studying, teaching, or preaching the Bible to truly engage with God in a life-changing and heart-shaping way. Part of the Preaching the Word series.

Book Synopsis Faith and Action by : R. J. Rushdoony
Download or read book Faith and Action written by R. J. Rushdoony and published by Chalcedon Foundation. This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 1218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faith and Action is the complete collection of the essays of R. J. Rushdoony written for the Chalcedon Report between 1965 and 2001 along with several transcripts of his recorded talks. The large volume The Roots of Reconstruction only contained his Chalcedon Report essays up until 1985, so most of the essays included in Faith & Action were unavailable to readers for many years until now. In order to make the author’s knowledge more accessible, this three-volume collection features some of the most extensive indexing we’ve ever done including a General Index, a History Index, a Scripture Index, a Works Cited Index, and a Chalcedon Report Directory. A total of 183 pages of indexing! This handsome set of books is a must have for any serious library. The central theme of this collection of essays is Christian Reconstruction, which to Rushdoony meant the responsibility of Christian citizenship in the Kingdom of God. For him, his central drive behind his research and writing was to move men to faith and action. Rushdoony was primarily an essayist who vigorously and prolifically wrote on a multiplicity of subjects, issues, and disciplines. Despite his being critical of both the contemporary church for its compromise and the humanistic state for its will to be as God, these essays are replete with Rushdoony’s undying faith in the victory of God in history. Rushdoony’s “big idea” was Christian Reconstruction which centered not on a pursuit of political power but rather an equipping of Christians to take back government by means of self-government in terms of God’s law. This three-volume collection will no doubt serve the larger church for many generations as they seek first the Kingdom of God in their spheres, and in their times.
