Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Structure of Wood and Some of Its Properties and Uses: An Address Before the Members of the Northern Hemlock and Hardwood Manufacturers Association, at the Forest Products Laboratory, April 28, 1915 A microscopical study of wood brings out the characteristics by which different kinds of wood can be identified. It makes clear many of the reasons for the variations in the properties, both chemical and physical, and for the behavior of wood under differ ent circumstances. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Timber: An Elementary Discussion of the Characteristics and Properties of Wood Wood is now, has ever been, and will continue to be, the most widely useful material of construction. It has been at the base of all material civilization. In spite of all the substitutes for it in the shape of metal, stone, and other materials, the consumption of wood in civilized coun tries has never decreased; nay, applications in new directions have increased its use beyond the saving effected by the substitutes. Thus, in England, the per capita consumption has increased in the last fifty years more than double, a fact which is especially notable, as the bulk of the timber used there must be imported, while iron and coal are plentiful in Great Britain. In the United States we can only estimate from the partial data fur hished by census returns. By these we find the per capita consumption to have increased for every decade since 1860 at the rate of from 20 to 25 per cent. Book Synopsis The Mechanical Properties of Wood (Classic Reprint) by : Frederick F. Wangaard
Download or read book The Mechanical Properties of Wood (Classic Reprint) written by Frederick F. Wangaard and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanical Properties of Wood Although intended primarily as a textbook for students of wood technology and forest utilization, this book has been written with the hope that it may also find use as a source of information for others desiring a knowledge of the technical properties of wood. In serving this objective, comprehensive tables presenting fundamental strength and related properties for more than one hundred and fifty American woods as well as tables of recommended basic and working-stress values for structural species have been incorporated in the text. Examples illustrating the derivation and application of stress values are provided. The treatment of certain phases of the text, especially those dealing with factors affecting the strength of wood and with working stresses and the basis for grading rules for structural lumber, has been made as complete as possible in the space available. An attempt has been made to avoid unnecessary technical language and descriptions, so that it may be understood by all those interested in wood. The preparation of this book was suggested by Dean George A. Garratt whose work of the same title, published in 1931, is well known in the field of wood technology. Although the present publication is based on Garratt's Mechanical Properties of Wood, subsequent developments in timber mechanics and timber engineering and the increase in knowledge relating to the effects of various factors on the properties of wood have necessitated extensive revision. The arrangement and method of treatment of its predecessor are retained, but the presentation of much of the subject matter is entirely new. Part 1 deals with stress and strain relationships of wood, an appreciation of which is essential to an understanding of its mechanical behavior. Much of the discussion in this section is elementary mechanics of materials in general, although it is written with special reference to wood. Download or read book Timber written by Paul Charpentier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Timber: A Comprehensive Study of Wood in All Its Aspects France will perish for want of wood - thus spoke Colbert. This great Minister's words, which have been so frequently quoted, may not withstanding find their place at the beginning of this work, when they will only serve to show of what importance the study of wood in general, of its applications, properties, and preservation can be. By speaking thus Colbert showed that be thoroughly grasped how important the employment of this precious vegetable could be to his country; he also manifested how he deplored the heedlessness of his contemporaries, as likewise the wasteful way in which they exploited the forests. The forests were for a long time considered as vestiges of barbarity - as a sort of natural and savage richness which could be made use of according to the immediate needs of consumption, without taking thought as to the reproduction of them. There are even now countries where wood is sacrificed to the roughest usages, or where, to use an historian's expression, Two pine-trees are hewn down to make a pair of wooden shoes, where, at any rate, forests are subject to complete destruction by the immoderate grazing of animals. Those which have been found to contain sufficient resin to justify working them are the long-leaf yellow pine, of the South, the Norway pine of the Central North, and the Douglas fir of the North west. The methods by which wood turpentine is recovered may be appropriately divided into three classes, (a) destructive distillation methods, (b) steam distillation methods, (a) extraction with solvents. Download or read book The Wood-Using Industries of Oregon written by Howard B. Oakleaf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-27 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wood-Using Industries of Oregon: With Special Reference to the Properties and Uses of Oregon Woods The State of Oregon is reported to have nearly four hundred billion feet of standing timber, an amount equal to approximately one-sixth of that now remaining in the United States. It would seem that Oregon should be among the foremost lumber produc ing states, but, owing to the present inaccessibility of much of the timber, its operation is greatly retarded. Oregon ranked ninth in 1909 in the production of lumber, having cut nearly two billion feet, and it is very probable that the 1910 cut will equal and possibly exceed the above amount. Of the two billion feet of lumber annually sawed in this state, four hundred million is shipped out by water and eight hundred million by rail. Of the remaining eight hundred million board feet consumed in the state, approximately 25 per cent is further manufactured into the various products considered in this report. The balance goes into general building and construction work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effect of Moisture Upon the Strength, and Stiffness of Wood The investigations of the mechanical properties of wood by the Forest Service are being carried out by several timber-testing stations, in cooperation with the University of California, Purdue University, the University of Oregon, the University of Washington, and the Yale Forest School. The general aim of these tests is not only to supply useful informa tion for engineers and architects, but also to determine the useful qualities and values for specific purposes of quick-growing woods, thus promoting the practice of conservative forest management, and to determine proper substitutes for material which is more valuable for uses other than those for which it is now employed.
