Book excerpt: "The main objective of this research was to evaluate the properties and structures of glasses from the stannous (SnO) phosphate system for possible use in low temperature optical applications. Glasses in the binary xSnO-(100-x)P2O5 system (50[less than or equal to]x[less than or equal to]70) were prepared and their thermal and optical properties were evaluated. Differences in glass transition temperatures (T[subscript g]) measured here and reported in the literature were explained by differences in the residual water content in the glasses, as determined by infrared spectroscopy. In general, increasing the SnO content of the binary glasses increased the refractive index and the glass transition temperature, and reduced the residual water content, producing glasses that are more chemically stable. Raman spectroscopy showed that the chain-length of the average phosphate anion decreased with increasing SnO content. The addition of B2O3 to a Sn(II)-pyrophosphate base glass (x= 67) improves the aqueous dissolution rate by an order of magnitude. The impact of these compositional changes on the optical and thermal properties depends on how the borate is added. Raman and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies reveal that boron is initially incorporated into the glass network in tetrahedral sites and the pyrophosphate anions are converted to orthophosphate anions. The effects of the addition of Ga2O3 and Sb2O3 on the properties of the tin phosphate glasses were also determined. In general, the addition of these modifying oxides increase the glass transition temperature from around 250°C to 350°C, and the refractive index (nD) was in the range 1.75-1.85, depending on glass composition. The chemical durability of these modified glasses was similar to those modified by B2O3-additions. Raman spectroscopy revealed the formation of isolated orthophosphate anions in the formation of Ga (Sb)-O-P glass networks"--Abstract, leaf iv.

Book excerpt: "This dissertation focuses on the properties and structures of ternary zinc phosphate glasses that have recently been investigated as substrates for femto-second (fs) laser writing. Although these glasses have potential for use as optical substrates, their poor chemical properties limit their applications. In this work, ternary zinc phosphate glasses were studied to find compositions with enhanced chemical durability and the properties and structures of the investigated glasses are reported. Paper 1 and Paper 2 include the first systematic studies of the properties, structures of zinc aluminophosphate (ZAP) glasses and phase relationships in the ZnO-Al2O3-P2O5 system, respectively. Adding alumina to a Zn-metaphosphate glass reduces dissolution rates in water by 4 orders of magnitude and increases the glass transition temperatures. The average Al coordination number can be predicted from a structural model that considers the number of non-bridging oxygens to coordinate metal cations, and this work is the first reported use of this model for a ternary phosphate glass. Paper 3 is the first systematic study of how the properties and structures of zinc magnesium polyphosphate glasses change when MgO replaces ZnO for compositions with fixed O/P ratios. The Mg2 and Zn2+ ions have similar field strengths, but have much different effects on glass properties that are discussed in terms of relative polarizabilities (refractivities) and electron configurations of the Mg2+ and Zn2+ ions. In Paper 4, the creation of electronic defects in zinc phosphate glasses by exposure to ultraviolet and x-ray radiation is described. The nature of the defects formed is dependent on the glass composition and similar defects are created when these glasses are exposed to femto-second laser radiation."--Abstract, page iv.

Book excerpt: "The effect of melting history on the iron redox equilibrium, structure, crystallization and properties of a binary iron phosphate glass with a 40Fe2O3-60P2O5 mol%, batch composition were investigated. The structure and properties of single and mixed alkali iron phosphate glasses were also studied. Mössbauer, Raman and infrared spectroscopy were used to determine the changes in the concentration of iron ions and phosphate units in the structure. Differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis were used to investigate crystallization. Density, molar volume, thermal expansion, dc electrical conductivity and dielectric constant and loss tangent were measured. The heat capacity and glass transition behavior of the glasses was also measured by the differential scanning calorimeter method. The effect of the melting temperature is stronger than the melting time on the concentration of Fe2 ions in iron phosphate glasses. The pyrophosphate network in iron phosphate glasses and their general properties do not change either with melting temperature and time or with adding up to 20 mol% of single and mixed alkali oxides. The dissolution rate (in deionized water) of these glasses is generally very low (~10−9 g/cm2/min) and nearly independent of the relative concentration of Fe2 or Fe3+ ions. The dissolution rate of the iron phosphate glasses containing 20 mol% of single or mixed alkali oxide can be comparable to that of window glass. There is no mixed alkali effect in the iron phosphate glasses. The crystallization tendency indicates that the glass structure becomes closer to that of crystalline Fe3(P2O-- )2 with increasing concentration of Fe2+ ions in the glass. The large fragility parameters indicates that the iron phosphate glasses belong in the category of the fragile glass-forming liquids"--Abstract, leaf v

This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is ongoing research into calcium phosphate glasses as possible candidates for use in dental restoration and in the field of bone implants. This is due to the fact that calcium phosphate glasses have many useful properties such as bioactivity, biocompatibility, bioresorbability and non toxicity. However, on the other hand they are also known to fail catastrophically and therefore cannot be used in load bearing applications and are limited as coatings to metallic substrates. Calcium phosphate glasses with different types of oxides such as magnesium, [27-28, 30-34] sodium, [14, 36-40] fluorine [41-42] in the presence of titania have been used in research to investigate whether addition of these oxides can help improve the properties of the glasses. It has been shown that calcium phosphate glasses containing fluorine have shown to produce fluoroapatite which is beneficial as it is known to be one of the ways in order to improve chemical durability of calcium phosphate glass-ceramics. [41-42] In the present study, type A glass and glass-ceramics demonstrated the effect of TiO2 addition with reduction of calcium to phosphorus ratio and type B glass and glass-ceramics demonstrated the effect of TiO2 addition with constant calcium to phosphorus ratio on the structure of fluorine containing calcium phosphate glasses and glass-ceramics. The TiO2 addition in type A took place in 5 %, 15 % and 20 % molar content of TiO2 and in type B, TiO2 was added to glasses in 4.76 %, 11.11 %, 16.66 % and 20 % molar content of TiO2. FTIR, DSC, XRD, ESEM and TGA (performed only on amorphous glasses) were used to characterise the glasses and glass-ceramics produced. DSC and density measurements showed that when 15 mol % TiO2 was added in type A; it caused disruption in the glass network which was confirmed by a reduction in the Tg. When TiO2 was added into the glass in type B, there was a general increase in Tg observed which confirmed that TiO2 might strengthen the glass network. XRD re.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The chemical durability of phosphate glasses in general can be improved by the incorporation of chemically dissolved nitrogen and/or addition of oxides such AI2O3. Over 100 oxide and oxynitride glass compositions were evaluated. The general compositions investigated were the following: 1. P2O5" xH2O; 2. MPO3 where M = K, Na, Ag; 3. M2O-AI2O3 -P2O5, where M = K, Na and Ag; 4. 3OK2O-10M2O3-60P2O5, where M = Al, Ga, In, La, B, Fe and Bi; 5. Glasses of general composition M2O-MO-M2O3-P2O5, where M2O stands for K2O, Na2O, Li2O and Ag2O, MO for BaO, CaO, ZnO and PbO, and M2O3 for A12O3, B2O3, Fe2O3, etc; 6 . Oxynitrides of the above compositions 7. Other glass compositions such as PbO containing glasses These glasses were investigated for the purposes of (a) identifying phosphate glasses whose thermal expansion and chemical durability make them suitable for sealing to high expansion metals like aluminum alloys and stainless steels, (b) learning more about how the dissolution of nitrogen in a glass can be affected by the processing conditions and glass compositions, (c) gaining more fundamental information for the structural role of nitrogen in phosphorus oxynitride glasses and its correlation with the properties of by oxynitride glasses, (d) investigating how oxide addition is compared to nitrogen dissolution in a glass in terms of chemical durability, thermal expansion and glass forming characteristics. The maximum nitrogen content achievable in phosphate glasses nitrided in ammonia depended not only on the time and temperature of remelting in ammonia, but also on the melt composition and the water content of the nitriding atmosphere. The presence of MO, M2O3 oxides, especially M2O3 oxides, in a glass melt limits the maximum nitrogen dissolution in the melt. The nitrogen content of some PONH glasses obtained from nitriding ammonium phosphate reached 17.8 wt%, while a glass containing ~ 10 mole% AL2O3 typically had a nitrogen content 1-3 wt%. Glasses containing Ag2O, PbO, Bi2O3 and Fe2O3 were not nitridable in dry ammonia. Metallic Ag, Pb and Bi were formed after nitriding in ammonia at 750-800°C for only 30 min. Many glass compositions in the system M2O-MO-M2O3 -P2O5 had a thermal expansion coefficient> 180xl0−7/°C and a dissolution rate in deionized water at 30°C 10−8gm/cm2" in and at 70°C
