Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Royal Society of Queensland, Vol. 22 It was during Leichhardt's expedition from Moreton Bay to Port Essington, 1844 to 1846, that Gilbert, the naturalist, a collector for Mr. Gould, was killed by the blacks on the western side of Cape York Peninsula. Very little was known of that part of the country at the time but the aboriginals had shown a decided disposition to dispute any claim on the part of the white settlers to interfere with them, or with the country they occupied. In 1848, when Kennedy tried to reach Port Albany by keeping nearer to the eastern side of the Peninsula, the blacks asserted their rights with equal determination, and their hostility led to the death of Kennedy himself, when, with his blackboy Jackey, he had pushed on until almost within sight of the place at which they had hoped to arrive in safety. Of a resin of superb ruby colour. This is a most handsome resin, and should be further enquired into, both from a scientific point of view, and also to investigate its usefulness for tinctorial or other economic purposes. The residue was then acted upon by water, with the result that per cent. Of a yellow substance, consisting of colouring matter and salts, was extracted. It contains no arabin. The residue (260 per cent.) is of a chocolate colour, consists of woody fibre and other vegetable debris, such as cone scales, &c., and does not contain any gummy matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Proceedings of the Royal Society of Queensland, 1884, Vol. 1: Part I The moas have lived in New Zealand almost down to our own days, and the presence of Dromornis and Dinornis in Aus tralia shows that on the main land this heavy-limbed branch of the struthious stock is comparatively ancient. It has, indeed, a molluscan longevity. It was a contemporary of fresh water shells which were here before the surface of the land was modernized, and are here now while we examine the feathers and tendons of the last of the moas. The Australian species were in all likelihood exterminated long ages ago, for we nowhere find their remains strewed and heaped on the surface, nor their des truction traceable to human agency. The absence of carnivorous mammals has been held suficient to account for their longer sur vival in New Zealand, but how is that absence itself to be ex plained, more especially now that we find on the continent bones of Dinornis, Thylacinus, Sarcophilus, and of the dog lying in ap parently the same drift.
