Book excerpt: If you are planning to obtain a grant of probate without a solicitor, especially if you are feeling a little daunted by the process, read this book first! After looking after mother-in-law's financial affairs for many years, I decided to carry out probate myself and started out on what I thought could be a lengthy and arduous process. It was not. There were hiccups, of course, but none of any great consequence. The process didn't take long, and it was not expensive. Anyone of reasonable intelligence, who can use a computer, write letters, keep accurate records, and understand official guidance should be perfectly capable of obtaining grant of probate and administering an estate. This is a diary of how it went. It includes some example spreadsheets and letters, the costs incurred and the amount of time spent on each stage. It is not a typical 'How To' guide, but is a record of my personal experience. I hope it will encourage others to take the plunge.

Surrogate Court dockets are filled with cases involving family members fighting over the assets and intentions of a deceased parent or spouse. Probate Wars of the Rich & Famous: An Insider’s Guide to Estate Planning and Probate Litigation tracks the estate litigation cases of Anna Nicole Smith, Brooke Astor, Michael Jackson, Nina Wang, Jerry Garcia and Leona Helmsley and identifies the five universal factors that caused such disputes. Each chapter provides estate planning insights designed to help individuals plan their estates without causing litigation. If, however, probate litigation cannot be avoided, the book also provides invaluable lessons about undue influence claims, how to remove a fiduciary, demanding an estate accounting and claims seeking to set aside lifetime transfers that undermined the decedents intentions. Few - if any – estate planning books utilize colorful celebrity accounts to provide meaningful insights and actionable advice.

Book excerpt: Journey To Genoa is based on the remarkable lives of Benjamin T. and Jane Jones who along with their children, migrate to America on the Buena Vista, the first Latter Day Saints or Mormon ship to sail from Wales to America with converts in 1849. Two days before the ship docks in New Orleans, the Jones family, having exposed the Mormon practices of communicating with the spirits and polygamy, is excommunicated by the Latter Day Saints. Follow their journey as they make their way alone in a strange land starting in New Orleans, then working their way West to St. Louis, where the tragedy of the cholera claims the lives of three family members, then across the plains where they encounter hostile Indians, violent weather and the near death of their infant daughter. In Salt Lake City, they again confront the Mormon hierarchy. Prophet and Territorial Governor, Brigham Young throws the five Jones men in the stockade. Persuaded by the women in the family, the US Cavalry not only rescues the men, but escorts the family out of the Valley towards the Gold Fields of California. Much has been written about the soiled doves of the Gold Rush, but little has been written about the respectable women who joined their husbands with their families in the Gold Fields. The Jones women take advantage of the laws of their new country that enabled them to own businesses in their own name, not just their husbands, one of which is a partnership with Levi Strauss in the beginning of his Levi pants empire. Eighteen months later their success rivals that of their husbands in the Gold Fields. With their new found wealth, they cross back across the Sierra and establish a home in the rich Carson Valley, Utah Territory. There they are part of the founding of the Nevada Territory and the State of Nevada.

Book excerpt: Sociologist Irving Krauss and Political Scientist Wilma Rule show that academics are not cloistered in their ivory tower. In their life-long journey as students and professors at major universities and regional institutions they give a first hand account of their universities inner workings and their struggle for justice in cases of gender discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful dismissal. Their odyssey begins as sweethearts at U.C. Berkeley and goes on to their ten years in Hawaii, sixteen in Illinois and retirement in a small mountain community in Californias Sierra Nevada mountains. Of greatly different originliving from New Yorks South Bronx and Wilma from Basin, Wyomingthey had similar values and interests that made them sensitive to injustice. During their 53 years of married life they also had major roles in Congressional and community politics. As children of the Great Depression of the 1930s Irving tells of occurrences in his working class neighborhood that did not get into the history books and Wilma relates events in her family that darken the lore of early ranching. They had a zest for living and describe unusual experiences in East Berlin and Egypt in their worldwide travel, mostly to professional conferences. They are indebted to their families emphasis on education and stress how important the availability of excellent and affordable schooling was for their successful pursuit of the American Dream.

Book excerpt: Dave is a man of determination and dedication in overcoming a challengea man who will not take no for an answer. After a near-fatal airplane accident, Daves doctors told him he would never walk again. But he did! They told him he would never return to his job at Ford Motor Company. But he did! And they told him he would never fl y an airplane again. But he did! The Spirits Journey describes Daves lifelong involvement in aviation with many interesting and humorous anecdotes Bob Pauley, private and glider pilot, aviation photographer, and author There is a story buried in this manuscript of when Mac McKenzie flew my mother and me for my first airplane ride. After the flight (I must have been three or four years old), Dave and I sat in the airplane and talked. He explained all the controls, instruments; and how they related to flying an airplane. I was hooked for life. He is responsible for my start in what turned out to be a very great and successful career in aviation Captain John D. Patten, Delta Airlines, Retired Theres little doubt in my mind, theres something we learn about ourselves, from the people that enter our lives. After reflecting on Dave McKenzies determination to succeed, courage, and will to overcome the adversities as told in his book, I hope you gain insight to your lifes perspective, its experiences, and that you become the person you truly wish to be. John O. Maxfield, corporate pilot In the heartwarming memoir The Spirits Journey, Dave McKenzie shares the inspiring story of how he overcame lifelong pressures, family opposition, and incredible personal hurdles in order to follow his dream of flying an airplane. As a young boy, he felt there could never be any odor more pleasant than the exhaust fumes that emitted from a small airplane engine. As each airplane he rode in started its take-off run, Dave would revel in the sensation of freedom he felteven as a passenger. He shares how both his mother and his teachers opposed his preferred career choice of becoming a pilot, but he also details how he relied on his determination, effort, and intelligence to make the most of his love of aviation while still enjoying a career as an automobile chassis designer. Yet his adventuresome choices were not without challenges. After he becomes an aerobatic pilot, he chronicles the disasterous air show and subsequent injuries that nearly ended his life and his dreams. Dave McKenzies story proves that the human spirit is a much stronger force than we ever imaginedeven when faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
