Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of the Transformer It is the aim of this book to present in a connected manner the principles of the alternating current transformer. Of the important position taken by the transformer in systems of distribution for light and power, and of the need of a consecutive treatment of the laws and fundamental facts upon which the operation of the transformer depends, little need be said by way of preface. Ten years ago the transformer was born, and in one decade it has attained its maturity. During its development it has been the subject of much investigation and study, and has been carefully considered from every standpoint, so that complete novelty of treatment is now scarcely looked for, - in fact would not be desirable. There is a demand, however, for a united and logical exposition of the principles involved; to this end the writer has turned his efforts, and contributes the following pages. In 1891, a work on transformer diagrams and the theory of the alternating current transformer was commenced by Dr. Albert C. Crehore and the writer. A systematic, geometrical treatment of the transformer was then undertaken with the idea of developing the principles of the transformer diagram so as to show the action of the transformer and the relation between the various quantities involved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Make Low-Pressure Transformers The hearty reception of the first edition of this small book has been very gratifying to the author who takes opportunity to answer, in the second edition, in the form of additional subject matter, a number of questions pertaining to fundamental principles, addressed to him by those interested in transformer construction; hoping by this method to aid many who desire to depart somewhat from the printed specifications and construct with similar material, transformers for a variety of application. Pertaining to design it is probable there is no form of core that will effect so high operative efficiency as the form of discs recommended. The numerous transformers made by amateurs according to the specifications and submitted to the writer for test, have all shown wonderfully high efficiencies for so small devices. The increasing popularity of "How to Make Low-Pressure Transformers," has rendered a third edition necessary. The wide spread sale of the book has been a pleasing feature. Copies have been sold in Alaska, the Panama Canal Zone, the Philippines, Norway, Italy, and throughout the United States, Canada and England. While in the third edition the book has been greatly enlarged, the price has not been increased. In this edition a new and very simple form of core construction is described on page 14. Due to the desire of many amateurs to make a small transformer without the use of discs for a core, a very simple type is described in this edition, beginning on page 16. A very novel utilization of discarded tin cans as transformer cores is also explained on page 20; being a lesson in the conservation of resources and the making of one transformer where none existed before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Static Transformers It has been deemed desirable that the present work should deal with the fundamental principles of practical designing, but so soon as these principles have been assimilated, the reader should proceed to study carefully the many essential constructional details. A Bibliography of a considerable number of papers relating to static transformers is given at the end of Chapter I. In conclusion, I wish to acknowledge the work of my former assistant, Mr. Evelyn Good, who carried through many of the calculations, under my direction, and prepared a good many of the curves and diagrams. My assistant, Mr. C. Martin, compiled from my data certain portions of Chapters VIII. And IX. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transformer Practice: Manufacture, Assembling, Connections, Operation and Testing The development of the alternating-current transformer dates back about 25 years. At that time very little was known re garding design for operation at high voltages, and the engineer of the present day can scarcely realize the difficulties encountered in the construction of the early transformers. The high-voltage transformer made long-distance trans mission work possible, and the increased distances of transmission stimulated the design of large transformers. In the early days of transformer development as many as 15 to 20 transformer secondary windings have been connected in series to facilitate the operation of a long-distance transmission system, the maxi mum rating of each transformer being not greater than 10 kw. However, a method of constructing large transformers has long been devised by which an enormous amount of power may be transformed in a single unit. Such designs embody principles of insulation for high voltages and various methods for maintain ing a low operating temperature. Ten years ago a 500-kilowatt unit was considered to be a large size of transformer. The history of ten years' development has shown a most interesting process of evolution: it has marked more than a tenfold increase in size up to the present day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transformers: Their Theory, Construction and Amplification, Simplified It has often been observed by almost every member of the electrical fraternity, that induction, and its out come, the transformer, is to the popular mind, the greatest mystery of the whole lighting system with which they come in contact. There is something tangible about the dynamo. Its movement, and the applied power are apparent. The lamp glows, and its action is appreciable, but the trans former remains to them an uncanny mystery. So too the average electrician whose training has long accustomed him to the management and applica tion of the electric current, finds in the transformer as a rule, more points regarding which his mind is hazy and uncertain, than in any other one piece of appara tus with which he has to deal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Alternating Current Machinery The transformer is the simplest piece of alternating-current apparatus and logically perhaps should be considered first in discussing the principles of alternating-current machinery. Experience has shown, however, that students just beginning the subject grasp the principles of the alternator more readily than those of the transformer. For this reason the alternator is taken Up first. No attempt has been made to treat all types of alternating current machines, only the most important being considered. Certain types have been developed in considerable detail where such development seemed to bring out important principles, while other types have been considered only briefly or omitted altogether. No new methods have been used, but it is believed that bringing together material which has been much scattered and making it available for students is sufficient reason for the publication of the book. Mathematical and analytical treatment of the subject has been freely employed where such treatment offered any advantage. The symbolic notation has been used throughout the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Transformer As of late the employment of alternating current transformers has largely increased and become of great importance, indeed as they are called upon to play a striking part in electric lighting from central stations, the author has thought a short notice of the development of this invention would possess some interest. This task appeared to be so much the more pressing, as many distorted versions of the invention and its priority have found place in the technical journals. The author has not let the reading of the large number of patents discourage him, and hopes that the following plain and concise statement of these researches will contribute towards the forming of a correct judgment as to the services rendered by the several inventors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Determination of the Ratio of Transformation and of the Phase Relations in Transformers Usually the phase of the secondary is so nearly the reverse of the primary phase that the error with high power-factors would be insignificant, but with low power-factors a large error might be introduced, as may be seen by reference to the numerical examples given below. In view of these facts, it is thought desirable to publish the methods of measurement of these quantities in use at the Bureau of Standards. In the vector diagram, Fig. i, are shown the various quantities which go to determine the ratio of the transformer. The length of the vector is proportional to the maximum value of the quantity, and it is considered to be rotating uniformly in a counter clockwise direction. Its projection on a fixed diameter will then represent the instantaneous value of the quantity, assuming it to be sinusoidal. The angles between the vectors represent the phase-angles of the corresponding quantities. represents the magnetic flux linking both primary and secondary windings. It induces in the secondary winding an electromotive force E2 and in the primary winding an electromotive force in the same direction, but of different magnitude, fixed by the number of turns. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transformers for Single and Multiphase Currents, Vol. 33: A Treatise on Their Theory Since the first edition of this book appeared, now twelve years ago, enormous improvements have taken place in the construction of transformers. Apart from the general development of the science of electrical engineering, which has affected all branches alike, these improvements were mainly due and rendered possible by three causes: the more general appreciation of oil as a cooling and insulating medium, the advent of alloyed iron, and last, but not least, the growing demand for large unit in connection with power transmission. Whilst only a few years ago a transformer of 200 or 300 kw. was considered a very large unit, now-a-days units of 1000 and more kw. have become quite usual. At the same time the efficiency has been raised, the regulation improved, and the price reduced. It has been my aim in the present edition to show how by a careful study of the thermic condition the output of a transformer of given weight and cost may be increased. I have also considerably enlarged the part dealing with the testing of transformers and iron samples. Some readers might perhaps think that I have given too much space to the treatment of ballistic and similar methods, since these belong rather to a treatise on physics than to an engineering handbook. The saving in the first cost of the copper mains being the chief advantage of the system in the eyes of the promoters, the question of the efficiency of this method of supply, except at full load, was not considered.
