Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is philosophy literature? Is literature philosophy?A revelatory treatise on creating lasting works of fiction - a must for every aspiring novelist."The discoverer and the poet are inventors; and they are so because their mental vision detects the unapparent, unsuspected facts, almost as vividly as ocular vision rests on the apparent and familiar.”"I propose to treat of the Principles of Success in Literature, in the belief that if a clear recognition of the principles which underlie all successful writing could once be gained, it would be no inconsiderable help to many a young and thoughtful mind. Is it necessary to guard against a misconception of my object, and to explain that I hope to furnish nothing more than help and encouragement? There is help to be gained from a clear understanding of the conditions of success; and encouragement to be gained from a reliance on the ultimate victory of true principles. More than this can hardly be expected from me, even on the supposition that I have ascertained the real conditions. No one, it is to be presumed, will imagine that I can have any pretension of giving recipes for Literature, or of furnishing power and talent where nature has withheld them. I must assume the presence of the talent, and then assign the conditions under which that talent can alone achieve real success, no man is made a discoverer by learning the principles of scientific Method; but only by those principles can discoveries be made; and if he has consciously mastered them, he will find them directing his researches and saving him from an immensity of fruitless labour. It is something in the nature of the Method of Literature that I propose to expound. Success is not an accident. All Literature is founded upon psychological laws, and involves principles which are true for all peoples and for all times. These principles we are to consider here."“In Literature we see a few original writers, and a crowd of imitators: men of special aptitudes, and men who mistake their power of repeating with slight variation what others have done, for a power of creating anew. The imitator sees that it is easy to do that which has already been done. He intends to improve on it; to add from his own stores something which the originator could not give; to lend it the luster of a richer mind; to make this situation more impressive, and that character more natural. He is vividly impressed with the imperfections of the original. And it is a perpetual puzzle to him why the public, which applauds his imperfect predecessor, stupidly fails to recognize his own obvious improvements.”

Nicholas Dames answers that deceptively simple question by revealing a now-forgotten range of nineteenth-century theories of the novel, a range based in a study of human physiology during the act of reading, He demonstrates the ways in which the Victorians thought they read, and uncovers surprising responses to the question of what might have transpired in the minds and bodies of readers of Victorian fiction. His detailed studies of novelcritics who were also interested in neurological science, combined with readings of novels by Thackeray, Eliot, Meredith, and Gissing, propose a vision of the Victorian novel-reader as far from the quietly immersed being we now imagine - as instead a reader whose nervous system was addressed, attacked, andsoothed by authors newly aware of the neural operations of their public. Rich in unexpected intersections, from the British response to Wagnerian opera to the birth of speed-reading in the late nineteenth century, The Physiology of the Novel challenges our assumptions about what novel-reading once did, and still does, to the individual reader, and provides new answers to the question of how novels influenced a culture's way of reading, responding, and feeling.

Napoleon Hill (October 26, 1883 – November 8, 1970) was an American self-help author and a pioneer in the field of personal development. Born in a one-room cabin in Virginia, he overcame many personal hardships to become one of the most influential writers on success and achievement. His book Think and Grow Rich is among the top 10 best-selling self-help books of all time. Summary of the Book The journey to success begins with a single step: defining your purpose. "A goal is a dream with a deadline." To achieve success, you must: A. Clearly define your goals and create a detailed plan for achieving them. B. Develop a burning desire to reach your goals, coupled with a positive mental attitude. C. Maintain unwavering faith in your ability to succeed, despite any obstacles you may encounter. Show respect for the dreams and ambitions of others. Never say, "You’re dreaming too big." Instead, consider that “every great achievement was once considered impossible.” Even if you believe someone’s goals are unrealistic, approach the conversation with humility and an open mind. Try something like: “I may not fully understand your vision, but I admire your determination. Let’s discuss how you plan to achieve it.”
