Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Oral English If a student thoroughly understands the thought content of a sentence and the emotion which aecom panics it, he will express it in exactly the manner which the rules set forth in this book indicate; and if he masters these rules and their application, he can give an accurate and just reason for his method of expression. To furnish, then, a standard Of measurement in the use of oral English, is the prime object Of this book; and since grammatical analysis is the only sure means of determining what the thought in a sentence is, the laws uttered have been applied to the various forms of the English sentence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good English Oral and Written, Vol. 1 This book is intended for use in the third and fourth years of the elementary school. The authors believe that children speak and write for the same reason that adults do - to tell something that is in their minds, something related to their own experiences, some thing that has a note of personal interest or preference or Opinion. Therefore, the material on which conversation and written exercises are based has been selected with refer ence to its living interest to children and its vital relation to their experiences. This material, moreover, has had thorough test in the classroom. It is now generally agreed that children learn to speak and write interestingly and effectively by speaking and writing under proper inspiration and guidance. Something to say and someone to say it to - an interesting subject and an interested audience - are prime requisites for growth of language power. In this, moreover, oral speech holds first claim on the atten tion of the school, because we speak more than we write. Throughout this text the authors have held clearly in mind these fundamental principles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oral English or the Art of Speaking This book has been written to supply a need. The vocational and civic importance of the ability to speak has been recognized by teachers of English throughout the country, but as yet the meaning of Oral English is rather vaguely and variously understood. We are con scious of our goal, but we lack method in our efforts to attain it. It is true that we no longer imagine that the art of speaking can be taught in a half-dozen lessons to the commencement speaker or the interscholastic debater. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals of Oral English: A Course for Secondary Schools The second principle follows from the first. A modifi cation oi vocal expression is made comparatively easy, if the mind Of the pupil can be fixed on the desired change. It is almost impossible to take the. Dullness and monotony out Of the voice of one who is totally deaf. It is likewise just about as difficult to improve the vocalization of a pupil who has no ear. The ear is the educator Of the muscles Of the throat and the other organs which control the voice. Let a teacher get his pupil into the habit of listening to his own vocaliza tion. Pu't each boy whose voice is hard and unpleasant, into the position of another person who is compelled to listen to that voice. Make him hear his Own defects; compel him to listen for improvement. Something can be done even with a pupil who cannot hear his own voice, even if not very much. With such a voice, the teacher's problem is much more dith cult. The best he can do is to suggest physical modifications in the position of the various parts Of the vocal apparatus, listen himself for improvement in the voice, and when he no tices that improvement, call the attention Of the pupil to the specific positions Of the organs which improve the tone. However, but few pupils will fail to recognize their own im provement Even if some make. No progress, the teacher must not be discouraged. Many a pupil who has no ear has been known to develop the power Of distinguishing between various notes, by careful attention to just such work as is outlined later in this manual. If all the truths which they have given to the world were embodied in practice the making of books might very well cease for a while. But theory runs far ahead of practice. Teachers are continually on the lookout for practical suggestion. It is only as they actually deal with the minds of children that they realize the truth of generalizations in fact, each must arrive at general truths for himself before they become vital and a real guide to practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What and How: A Guide to Successful Oral Teaching In the Kindergarten and Infant Schools most of the instruction given to the children must of necessity be by word of mouth, or by what is generally called "Oral Teaching." The same method has at times to be adopted with elder children. Much, however, of what goes by that name is often a mere talk about a subject which is passing through the teacher's mind, but which is not lodged in the minds of those addressed. When such exercises are judged by the rules of teaching they are found to be failures. The cause of the failure is in the teachers themselves, and arises mainly from ignorance: ignorance of what is included in the term Teaching, and ignorance of the real nature of Instruction. To remove this ignorance is the object of the following pages. First. The Nature of Teaching. 1. Teaching is not the mere storing the memory with words, but it is the development of ideas, which ideas may be regarded as so many mental forces enabling those who possess them to perform mental work on their own account. Experienced teachers know this, but it is no uncommon thing for a young teacher to say Study Lesson for tomorrow, when the material of the exercise is quite unintelligible to pupils without preparatory class work. Methods for using the exercises are described in the Handbook for Teachers which contains also a key for the sentences, and sections on Story Reproduction, Original Composition, and Reading. The Handbook should be studied by the teacher before this book is put into the hands of pupils. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
