'The Principles of Biology - Volume 2.' is a comprehensive work that outlines biological morphological development, physiological development, and laws of multiplication. Herbert Spencer was born on 27th April 1820, in Derby, England. In 1851 he published 'Social Statics' to great acclaim and his quietly influential 'Principles of Psychology' in 1955. These were followed by numerous works of sociology, psychology, and philosophy, which led him to become a prominent intellectual of his day. He also wrote 'The Developmental Hypothesis' (1852) which described the theory of evolution seven years before Charles Darwin's 'Origin of Species'. He even popularised the term "Evolution" and coined the phrase "Survival of the fittest," but his works did not contain the comprehensive theoretical system that Darwin's did, which is why his theory was not taken seriously at the time. Spencer's most famous idea was that of "Social Darwinism." He saw the process of organic evolution as being analogous to that of society, an idea influenced many intellectuals of the day.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Biology, Vol. 2 The proof sheets of this volume, like those of the last volume, have been looked through by Dr. Hooker and Prof. Huxley; and I have, as before, to thank them for their valuable criticisms, and for the trouble they have taken in checking the numerous statements of fact on which the arguments proceed. The consciousness that their many duties render time extremely precious to them, makes me feel how heavy is my obligation. Part IV., with which this volume commences, contains numerous figures. Nearly one half of them are repetitions, mostly altered in scale and simplified in execution, of figures, or parts of figures, contained in the works of various Botanists and Zoologists. Among the authors whom I have laid under contribution, I may name Berkeley, Carpenter, Cuvier, Green, Harvey, Hooker, Huxley, Milne-Edwards, Ralfs, Smith. The remaining figures, numbering 150, are from original sketches and diagrams. The successive instalments which compose this volume, were issued to the Subscribers at the following dates: - No. 13 (pp. 1 - 80) in January, 1865; No. 14 (pp. 81 - 160) in June, 1865; No. 15 (pp. 161 - 240) in December, 1865; No. 16 (pp. 241 - 320) in June, 1866; No. 17 (pp. 321 - 400) in November, 1866; and No. 18 (pp. 401 - 560) in March, 1867. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "John Hughlings Jackson (1835-1911) was a preeminent British neurologist in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He began to establish that standing in the 1860s, when he incorporated the evolutionary association psychology of Herbert Spencer into his early analyses of 'loss of speech' (aphasia). Jackson also benefitted from his early connection with the National Hospital, Queen Square, London, becoming its leading theorist. His nuanced theory of cerebral localization was derived from (1) his clinical observations of (what Charcot later called) Jacksonian epilepsy, in combination with (2) his innovation to think about neurophysiological events at the cellular level, as well as from (3) David Ferrier's primate localization data. The result was our modern conception of the seizure focus. The latter was crucial to the beginnings of modern 'brain surgery,' especially at the hands of Victor Horsley. Jackson's influence on the neurophysiology of Charles Sherrington is widely acknowledged but not well defined. In the larger Victorian culture, Jackson was a friend of George Henry Lewes, who was George Eliot's companion. Lewes attributed 'sensibility' to everything in the nervous system, thus maintaining a monist position on the mind-body relation, whereas Jackson maintained a form of psycho-physical parallelism that was actually dualist ('Concomitance'). Throughout his life Jackson had an interest in insanity, which he viewed from the point of view of Spencerian evolution and dissolution. The latter was an important component of Freud's psychoanalysis, which Freud took from Jackson. Late in his life Jackson defined the 'uncinate group of fits,' which was his definition of temporal lobe epilepsy"--

His works ranked alongside those of Darwin and Marx in the development of disciplines as wide ranging as sociology, anthropology, political theory, philosophy and psychology. In this acclaimed study of Spencer, the first for over thirty years and now available in paperback, Mark Francis provides an authoritative and meticulously researched intellectual biography of this remarkable man that dispels the plethora of misinformation surrounding Spencer and shines new light on the broader cultural history of the nineteenth century. In this major study of Spencer, the first for over thirty years, Mark Francis provides an authoritative and meticulously researched intellectual biography of this remarkable man. Using archival material and contemporary printed sources, Francis creates a fascinating portrait of a human being whose philosophical and scientific system was a unique attempt to explain modern life in all its biological, psychological and sociological forms. Herbert Spencer and the Invention of Modern Life fills what is perhaps the last big biographical gap in Victorian history. An exceptional work of scholarship it not only dispels the plethora of misinformation surrounding Spencer but shines new light on the broader cultural history of the nineteenth century. Elegantly written, provocative and rich in insight it will be required reading for all students of the period.
