Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Bacteriology We begin to realize that it is while studying bacteriol ogy that the rationale and the principles of bacterial prophylaxis are first brought to the nurse's attention, yet but very little information of this nature is usually given and but very little stress is laid on the connection between bacteriology and prophylaxis; it seemed to me that this would be a very appropriate place and a very opportune time to drive home the lessons, and for this reason, I have introduced in each chapter dealing with individual microorganisms, a section - Mode of Infection, Disinfection and Prophylaxis - as regards the disease caused by particular microorganisms, giv ing explicit instructions as regards the patient and those who mingle with him, including the nurse, the room and its contents. With the present need for more and more nurses, both here and over there, a demand for nurses capa ble of serving as laboratory assistants and technicians will be felt, and for this reason I have gone into the minute description of the simpler technical procedures, giving complete and detailed directions, taking nothing for granted and leaving nothing to one 's imagination. For this reason I have laid much stress on cultural diagnosis giving much prominence to the several culture media used for the differentiation of the various mem bers of the typhoid-colon-dysentery group. In each chap ter a section is provided on Bacteriologic Diagnosis, under which all tests called for in connection with the particular disease are enumerated and complete technic is given, usually describing but one method - the one which has proved most serviceable in my hands. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Bacteriology: Technical and Agricultural This book is intended to serve as an introduction to Bacteriology in all its branches, though more attention has been bestowed on that aspect of the subject which is of most interest to students of technical and agricultural bacteriology. Of late years, great strides have been made in this fascinating subject, and an attempt has been made to incorporate in the text the recent developments that are of fundamental importance. In some instances, as for example in our conceptions of the anaerobic bacteria, important changes have taken place. In other instances, however, our knowledge is still incomplete and rudimentary. Controversial questions, and matters requiring a technical know ledge of a special nature have been either omitted or have received only a passing reference. In all cases, where a technical application of bacteriol'ogy is discussed, the aim has been the demonstration of the fundamental principles which underlie that application, rather than the discussion of the details. It has been deemed advisable to introduce a comparatively large amount of matter of purely theoretical interest, because in no other branch of science is a theoretical knowledge more necessary than in the science of Bacteriology. When one bears in mind that the organisms which are here discussed are visible only with the highest magnifications of the microscope, are very changeable in their nature, and are everywhere present around us, the need for a thorough theoretical training becomes obvious, even for those who wish only to make practical applications. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Elementary Bacteriology In presenting this manual we are endeavoring to meet a demand of the student for a briefer discussion of bacteriological principles than is found in the text-books now on the market. It has been our object to give the present status of bacterio logical knowledge in as concise a way as possible. To attain this we have avoided detailed description of old and obsolete methods which have only historic interest, and of theories which only tend to confound the student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Bacteriology A Manual of Bacteriology, therefore, which fairly represents the present state of knowledge, will consist largely of a statement of facts established by experimental data, and cannot fail to be of value to physicians and to advanced students of bacteriology as a work of reference. The present volume is an attempt to supply such a man ual, and at the same time a text-book of bacteriology for students and guide for laboratory work. That portion Of the book which is printed in large type will, it is hoped, be found to give an accurate and sufficiently extended account of the most important pathogenic bacteria, and of bacteriological technology, to serve as a text-book for medical students and others interested in this department Of science. The descriptions of non-pathogenic bacteria, and of the less important or imperfectly described species of pathogenic bacteria, are given in smaller type. For the benefit of students of medicine and others who do not care especially for the detailed descriptions Of non-pathogenic bacteria and the extensive bibliography contained in the Manual, this text-book OF bacteriology is now published. It comprises that portion of the Manual above referred to as printed in large type, revised to in clude all important additions to our knowledge of the pathogenic bacteria since the original date Of publication. At the same time very appreciable changes were observed in the liquid in question, but no one supposed that there existed between the two orders of facts such a close relation as cause and effect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Soil Microbiology This book is a collection of known facts concerning microorganisms found in the soil and their activities; it is a study of the literature dealing with the science in question; it is an interpretation of the facts already presented; it indicates the various lines of investigation and notes where further information is especially wanted. Soil microbiology is a science which is at the very base of our understanding of agricultural processes and the practice of agriculture; it comprises a number of sciences. The book may, therefore, be looked upon more as an introduction to further research rather than as an ordinary text-book; as of help to those work ing in the allied sciences, who are desirous of obtaining some information concerning the soil population and its activities. If this volume will help to disclose to the reader some of the numerous interrelated processes in the soil, if it will present in a clearer light to the chemist, the physiologist, the botanist, the bacteriologist and the zoologist the nature of the many scientific and practical problems awaiting the investigator, if it contributes in a small measure toward making soil science an exact science, the author will feel that he has been amply rewarded.
