Book excerpt: Isoenzymes were 'discovered' 20 years ago and were at first regarded as interesting but rare occurrences. Since then a wealth of information on enzyme heterogeneity has accrued and it now seems likely that at least half of all enzymes exist as isoenzymes. This is important in many areas of biological and medical science. Thus isoenzyme studies have provided the main experimental substance for the neutral drift controversy in genetics and evolution; they have greatly extended our understanding of metabolic regulation not only in animals but also in bacteria and plants; their existence has made available a multitude of highly sensitive markers for the study of differentiation and development, as well as providing indices of aberrant gene expression in carcinogenesis and other pathological processes. Iso enzymes are also being used increasingly in diagnostic clinical bio chemistry. It is surprising that this phenomenon which affects such a high pro portion of enzymes and is clearly important in biochemistry should receive such scant attention in the standard textbooks of that subject, the formal treatment of isoenzymology in these rarely exceeding one or two pages. This may be because the 'pure biochemist' has tended to regard variation in enzyme properties between tissues more as an unwanted complication than as a potential source of insight into diversity of biological function.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The newcomer to the field of clinical chemistry is faced with the daunting prospect of understanding the ever increasing aspects of the subject: new techniques, tests, terminology, methods of diagnosing diseases and other advances which relate to clinical chemistry. The aim of this book is to provide basic information regarding all branches of the subject which the trainee will need to understand. The book should also provide a basis for answering many of the examination questions of clinical chemistry. It is therefore hoped that this book will prove useful to any person starting a career in clinical chemistry, be that person a laboratory scientific officer, graduate or trainee pathologist. Wherever possible, suggestions for further reading are given. Many subjects are so broad however that the reader is referred to the general list of analytical and clinical textbooks supplied at the end of the book. My grateful thanks are extended to the three ladies who typed this manuscript: Christine Cliffe, Margaret Donnelly and Judith Hardy. I would like to thank Dr Brian Wisdom of Queens University, Belfast for his suggestions on the entry "Enzyme-immunoassay". Finally my thanks go to Mr Martin Lister of MTP Press for his help and encouragement in this venture. W. H. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the molecular sciences, enzyme chemistry occupies a special niche as one of the major contact points between chemical and biological disciplines. The special properties of enzymes as selective and efficient catalysts are so central to current challenges to chemists that the development of enzyme chemistry in the past thirty years has been a major stimulus to chemical research in general. On the one hand studies of the intrinsic properties of enzymes and, on the other hand, their applications to synthesis, drug design, and biosynthesis have had an immense impact. This book brings together in one volume essays describing several such fields with emphasis on the applications. It would be unnecessarily repetitious to outline the approach and contents of the book in a Preface; the first short chapter is more eloquent than a formal Preface can be. I shall therefore encourage you to begin with the Introduction in Chapter 1 and here I wish to extend my warm thanks to those who have contributed to the production of this book: the authors for their acceptance of the overall concept of the book and for the thoughtfulness of their writing; Dr Charles Suckling, FRS and Professor Hamish Wood for their constructive criticism of the whole book; and Dr John Buckingham and his colleagues at Chapman and Hall for their efficiency and enthusiasm in transforming the typescripts into the book that you now hold. The purpose of this new text is to bring these developments to the attention of undergraduates taking courses in biochemistry. The emphasis is on topics (membrane structure and function, hormone action and secretion) where current knowledge of macromolecular and cellular structure and function is likely to contribute most to understanding the underlying pathology of common multifactorial diseases. The book also outlines the basic features of recombinant DNA techniques and the impact they are having in the diagnosis, treatment and knowledge of disease processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few years have witnessed major developments in molecular biology which have had a significant impact on biomedical knowledge. As a result new concepts in cell biology have emerged, new etiologic agents have been discovered, and new drugs have become available. Furthermore, the world of mediators, cytokines, and humoral factors has enlarged considerably in a relatively short period and this has modified our views of diverse physio pathologic processes as well as opened up new therapeutic prospects. In addition, recent technologic advances have revolutionized our diagnostic methodology and have greatly enhanced the power of our therapeutic resources. All these factors have contributed to a substantial remodeling of both liver science and clinical hepatology, and these changes have generated the motivation for the production of the present book, which attempts to give an account of well-known clinical facts in the light of current thinking. It is the fruit of the coordinated work of experts from different countries in three continents. In a sense, it is a manifestation of the fact that inter national cooperation is becoming increasingly important not only in the expansion of science but also in its exposition. We hope that Hepatobiliary Diseases will be useful to both students and clinicians and that internists, gastroenterologists, and general practitioners will find in its contents a satifactory coverage of their field of interest.
